I just can't believe no one has asked the obvious question: What on
earth was Brett Anderson doing driving a PORSCHE 996?? I'm amazed he
admitted to it, and he deserves some serious shit for the transgression.

Kathy,

I'll admit that I noticed the Porsche 996 part, but I figured since he was
on such a rant that I better not give him any grieve. I did not want to be
lumped in with the maggots <g>

Dean

What was he doing driving a Porsche 996?

A couple of weeks ago on 195 I was passed by a state trooper. He was doing
90 or 95 in a 65 and then he braked hard to settle in his favorite speed
trap spot behind an overpass. You gotta love it.

I was wondering if it's possible for a regular person to give him a ticket.

I've ridden with Jim. I agree with the abuse assessment. He corners
too fast, barely slowing down at all. He brakes at the last possible
moment, and then accelerates seemingly as fast as possible. That
can't be good for the car. I was glad I was wearing a helmet.
Heck, last time I saw him, he had to change his tires before going
home - they were practically bald!

While I agree with your sentiment, my mom once told me that a 'fair price'

There are other dangerous results from speed enforcement:

- - People who drive fast (not me, I've had enough) usually stay out of the
left lane and pass in the right lane. This is dangerous because people are
less prepared for cars passing them on the right.

- - People usually speed in tight packs. I'm assuming it's harder to pick
someone out with a radar gun. Drive alone, with half a mile before and
behind you and you can count on getting a speeding ticket.

Sorry to post about this also/again, but it bothers me (too).

All of the discussion regarding the issue of tickets for holding out in the
left lane makes me curious. Does anyone have any idea what the actual number
of citations might be compared to the tickets given when a bunch of cars is
moving at the same rate of speed even though that speed is above the limit.
What bothers me is I too have never seen the slow poke sleepy left laner get
pulled over. And what about; Clear day, dry road, light to med. traffic,
everybody doing 10 mph over the limit. All of a sudden a trooper enters the
highway, everyone backs off, tightens up the distances between cars and
instantly creates an unnatural driving scenario. Here in N. California 10
miles above the limit is average everyday speed. Of the people, by the
people, et. Who's running this show? Aren't we effectively "Voting" with our
foot?

Oh well.. if you had the heater fan go bad.. :-)

BTW - anyone consider alternative fans for the aux-fan? Certainly
enough other cars use these that paying $300+ for the 'real thing'
seems a bit silly. Aftermarket universal fans run from $30 to $70..
and appear to be of excellent quality..

I agree, Gilbert. I've watched the Washington State Patrol slide
by on the road on freezing ice/rain conditions with ALL 4 LOCKED,
just like some of the rest of us.... this is only like at 20-25mph.
But the fact remains, when weather surprises you and you come
around a turn and it's all ice, grab your ass and good luck.....
(and he, as a COP, had NO CONTROL at that point!)
couldn't turn, stop, whatever until inertia and gravity just ran
their course.. 8-)

The cops are supposed to be trained and know what to do. I know
up here they at least throw them out on the wet skid pad for a few
days... but that doesn't mean they can walk on water any better
than the rest of us track junkies......(and I would suspect the majority
of them have far less practical experience at HIGH SPEED than
the average club track junkie who has attended more than 4-5
schools. Why? They just don't have it in the budget to spend the
money on the training they really DO DESERVE since they are out
there putting themselves and OURSELVES lives' on the line EVERY
day!! To me, this is criminal, that the gov't, local or otherwise wouldn't
give these public servants a high(er) level of driver training before
entrusting them to know how to handle their cars and themselves in
high pursuit/high stress situations. How can this be??

And I know they get some skid-pad training in school.
Fact remains, like it or not, I know for a fact I could easily
just completely DUST these guys in my M3 if they happened to
want to stop me up here where I live on the two-lane twisty highway.
Big deal, look at the crappy cars they drive now days. No kiddin',
your car is much faster? No shit... Give them a break. I have to
say, I feel sorry for them. Thank God for Motorola and repeators
or the bmw heathens would be raining death and destruction all over
the planet (ha, ha!) They don't (the average grunt cop) get
paid enough for going to "war" every day on the job. I just want to
leave them alone, and hope they reciprocate.

I don't care to test their radios, though, and would prefer to remain
on their "good sides" as much as possible as they all know where
I live anyhow. I don't prefer to test my luck coming around a local
35mph posted corner at 75 and meeting "bambi" or "ma and pa"
in their broke down camper/honda/trailer "fill in the blank" either,
(easy enough done with no surprises...)
so I generally save my fun driving days for the TRACK, thank you!
I live in skamania county (WA.) and AFIAK there are only 2 blue M3's in
the county... we
(and the other guy who I've met at PIR lives on complete opposite
sides of the county) have only ~10k population in the whole county
(this is where Mt. St. Helens is for some more WOB...) So it isn't
like a big mystery if the local sheriff wants to come visit....

you can hit that stuff up here where it's below freezing and good
traction for a few miles, then you go around a corner and over
a hill a bit, and it's ALL ice with a fine layer of melting water on
top (OH YEAH, just PERFECT!!) don't ask me how i know....

Maybe it's just a difference between 32-33 degrees and a little bit
more wind blowing (20-40mph??) down the gorge.....

have fun on those winter tires, and WATCH YOUR ASS....
ASC can work great, I run up a big hill and quite steep grade in
light snow/frost with ASC and it works wonders. Get stuck in a
parking lot with 4" of snow and I CAN'T MOVE until I turn ASC
off. I don't think it works real GREAT at slow speed/standing starts.

And for you winter tire junkies/survivalists out where the REAL winter
lives, I still think you can't beat the Hakkapeliitta tires for snow and ice.
Let's face it, who can teach the Fins about snow/ice??
I've run a set on my '74 ghia, but try to refrain from running my E36
M3 when it's really nasty so don't know about fitment and performance
on those cars.. but I sure would look into it if I wanted to run it all year
around. In general, narrow is ALMOST always better in snow, more
weight/PSI per corner which makes a big difference in snow.

As far as why I don't run my M3 all year:
There is just so much "sand" the county puts on the roads
down here when there is ice ( 'SAND' = 1-1/4" minus gravel)
Hello new windshield, hello MUCHOS rock dings on the front of the car!
Better than salt, though, so I guess I shouldn't whine and just be thankful
I've got a "winter beater" to run when it really gets ragged out here.
But for ragged, let's defer to our friends on the "Konservative Coast"
this time around... 8-) 8-; sorry, couldn't help it..... Hope you
guyz are OK....

cheers,
