I can not believe how much of a problem this is for some people.

I did this last weekend and the complete removal and installation
which included replacing the strut and new shock took only
three hours from start to finish. The job would have taken
less time if I did not try and strip one of the bushing mounting
bolts.

Place a jack under the oil pan but make sure you have a board
between the jack and pan. Remove the top nut holding the
rubber motor mount to the engine mount bracket. Lift the
motor and remove the rest of the rubber motor mount.
With the motor mount out of the way you can get a boxend
wrench on the ball joint nut.

I managed to get a socket on the nut to tighten it but it required
two wobble extensions but I did get it torqued to specs.

I have heard or I think I have read that some people will support
the motor with a hoist and drop the entire cross member.

If any one living in the north Seattle area want to do this drive
up and I will help. I do not drink rolling rock but I do drink either
Harp or Warstiner. Just bring plenty of either one. Oh, of course
call or write to arrange time and date.

Subject: [uuc] <E34> '92 525i Cyclical Brake Pedal Vibe

I have recently noticed a cyclical vibration of my brake pedal on my '92 525i
(manual). I notice that sitting at a stop light, engine warm and idling
normally, I get a vibration through the brake pedal every 3.5 to 3.8 seconds
as timed by the onboard computer timer. I think that the idle slows ever so
slightly when this happens. No check engine light. No ABS light, etc.

Just curious as to what this is. Ideas?

I don't know if I'd enjoy seeing how fast I can go straight, even if I had
a 'hot' engine. ;) You have such a good handling car. Ever hear the
expression, 'Happiness IS the corner'? I hope you enjoy autocrossing and
then later find driving schools. It's a lot more fun when you get to turn
the steering wheel. Seems to me you are wasting a perfectly good car.

Mild experience (dad's 16x,000 mile-old 735i) shows what wonders regular
servicing and a bit of TLC can do. I think that car will probably outlast
*me*. Lots of bulbs have blown since 1988, yet the dampers have only just
been replaced (having been tested religiously every six months since about
1994). A friend has an M3 with something like 150,000 miles on it - the only
non-service item has been a new chain - and in BMWCar I've read of a guy
continuing to use his 400,000 mile-old 733i as a tow vehicle because it
refuses ever to go wrong.

My brother reckons he'll trade his 318is in around 2005, by which time it
should be showing 250,000.

Scott,

414,000 miles on any car, is unheard of. Wow, I wonder what did this
person get for this trade in. I have never heard of such. Makes me want to
continue to keep my car with out notes. However, there is no doubt in my
mind my car would never hold out. I wonder what what his secret:)

Greg ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes:

There are some good points in your argument, although I don't necessarily
agree with everything... but isn't diversity a wonderful thing? Indeed, such
diversity is never healthier than when manifested by crawling along
traffic-clogged German autobahns or negotiating the back-markers on the
racetrack that doubles as the 405 in Southern California :).

Greg I'm genuinely surprised that the M5 you drove could not manage an
isolated stop from maximum speed to zero. No road test I've read so far has
complained about braking inadequacy (unlike certain Jaguars, for example,
whose anchors have been reported as being palpably inadequate even under
relatively mild conditions). I agree that any manufacturer should fit brakes
capable of slowing the car from its maximum speed to zero without going bang
or falling to bits. But BMW builds heavier cars than the M5, all capable of
155 mph, and I've never read of them having inadequate brakes for normal
road conditions*. Moreover, many of those cars capable of 155 mph have
inferior brakes to the M5, however you qualify "inferior". I would pose the
question, then, that perhaps the braking problem you encountered was a
function of that particular car, and not something endemic to the whole of
production?

* normal in Germany only, inasmuch as it's possible to go 155 mph legally,
and even then you'd be lucky to find a stretch of road there where you can
still go 155 mph.

I doubt any 1800 kg saloon of similar ilk would withstand being driven
around the 'ring at what approximates to race speed. I can think of no car -
save for stripped-out, race-ready 911s of yore - that would stand up to such
abuse (abuse as defined by the terms of the factory warranty and owner's
manual). Fitting massive brakes a la Mov'it might delay the moment of
failure (excessive fade), but the irrelevance of such fitments, considering
the expected use of the car, cannot be ignored - assuming that what *is*
fitted is adequate for the most taxing road use, of course. Certainly the
stoppers on the E55, S8 and any of the supercharged Jaguars are no better.
And in Jaguar's case noticeably worse, as admitted by the factory.

So what causes this situation? The things I can think of are:

1) Cars are getting heavier because buyers demand more and more equipment -
HID, electric seats, servos for the throttle and steering wheel adjustment -
more luxury, more airbags, more safety devices, better crash performance,
more power, quietness. Weight is a big enemy of brakes, I'm sure everyone
will agree.
2) Cars are getting cheaper because because buyers also demand value. So to
satisfy (1) above, cost-cutting measures are made.
3) Expectations are being set unrealistically by over-zealous marketing and
advertising, or by past experience (this may not apply to all markets).

Now, who to blame?

Andy T

Several weeks ago I was asking for advice about the BMW F650 as a
possible replacement for my 1978 Honda commuter bike.

There were several good alternate bikes suggested and I looked at all of
them that I could find. But the BMW dealer is very close to me and the
bike does meet my needs. So I brought home a '99 F650 today. And its
almost Estoril Blue too :)
