Stunning. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 01:08:11 -0500 From: "Grant Low" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] idea: variable speed limits (long) I'm usually in lurk mode, but I had an idea today while cruising at 95 for a short bit on a 4-lane divided 55mph /totally/ empty road. <grin> Why aren't there "smart" speed limit signs that can take traffic and weather data and calculate an actually /appropriate/ speed limit. In these digitally advanced days, the technology needed can only be getting more available and less expensive. Here's how I'd propose going about this: You know those octagon-shaped "car-detectors" at smart stop lights? Why not put those in the road spaced at intervals of a couple miles to monitor how much traffic is moving through each zone? Then weather data such as precipitation and temperature could be fed via underground cable or through some wireless method. The sensors would take into consideration traffic volume and the possibility of adverse conditions and create a truly reasonable speed limit. If the road is dry, clear, and traffic is light, an interstate/freeway/parkway limit could be as high as 85 (the majority of Americans couldn't handle higher than that without freaking out or getting lazy and causing problems), or if the temperature is near freezing, humidity has been high in the past 2-3 days, and/or traffic is heavy, the limit could go as low as 40. Of course this would require the in-car computers of patrollmen to be constantly updated with which cars had been past what speed limit sign, and thereby stop cops from ticketting people who had been "given" a higher limit. This would also be very useful when there is a wreck that slows or stops traffic. "Upstream" speed limit signs could be notified of the accident and start stepping down the speed limit and lower the number of rear-ender pileups. This is just a little idea... feel free to comment. Grant 87 325 - loves cruising fast! PS, I'm an MIS major and it would be awesome to create this system.... anyone willing to pay me for R&D? ;) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 00:10:37 -0600 From: Scott Blazey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Snell ratings Jim asks >>Anybody know when the '00 Snell ratings will start to appear on SA helmets? << According to the Snell Foundation web site http://www.smf.org/standards/sa20std.html they should have completed the final draft for SA2000 standards last May. While they have begun SA2000 testing, they will not make any SA2000 certifications until the official release of the standards, which is supposed to be September/October 2000 (barring any unforeseen complications). At that time, they will release the SA2000 decals to certified manufacturers. If they hold to this time line, we probably won't see SA2000 helmets for sale until the end of this year at the earliest. This web site also contains the revised performance requirements for the SA2000 standard, if anyone's interested. How would the motorist (or prosecution) for that matter prove in court that the speed limit was xx mph at the time? You're also assuming that the generate public is smart and can process more information that gas pedal = faster, brake pedal = slower... Heck, most 'mericans don't even know how to drive a stick. I love hearing stories of would be car jackings where a thug approaches a person opening the car door only to get into the car, then get out of the car because he doesn't know how to drive a stick! You know the type...left lane hoggers, people who leave their turn signals on for miles on end, people who need a gong added to vehicle to remind him/her that the turn signal is still on (as if the ticking from the relay wasn't a clue...or that flashing light in the dash), people who need automatic seat belts, people who need airbags because they don't use seat belts, people who despite seeing the benefits of EZ-Pass still choose to sit in (and generate) traffic waiting in line at the toll booths, etc, etc... Last thing I need is some blue-haired grandma driving with the high beams on plowing down the turnpike at 85 mph because her eyesight misinterpreted 35 mph....yikes. Also, you would then have to factor in the condition of the car, inherent handle, etc. So have a small bar code on each car that would relay all this info to those little transponders? That would be cool. It could automatically set the speed limit higher for a caravan of BMWs. ...and slower for the 'merican cars ;) I think Brett Anderson wrote (somewhere buried in his rant =) that 55 mph in their cars feels scary because those POSes feel like they're going to fall apart. 85 felt mighty scary in my '90 Oldsmobile Delta 88. 120 (feet per minute) feels solid in my M3.. =) FWIW, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? These two steps have fixed most of my RealPlayer streaming problems. I don't have my Mac handy, so these instructions are for Windows boxes. It's usually not a bandwidth issue - Real uses adaptive streaming, which scales the streaming rate to the bandwidth available. Ok, police get some driver training. However, they are (crown >vics) heavier (inflict more damage) don't stop/corner as well as my BMW. So >why do I get a ticket if I am no less safe? (And probably more safe.) >Gilbert Hoffman Well Gilbert...if you are asking the question, then you must not be actually aware why they run without the lights and sirens. 1) You, driving your car, are probably NOT attempting to overtake and stop another vehicle. If you are, it is unlikely you are doing it as a funtion of your job. 2) Police get A LOT more driver training than you think (especially here in California) and....the training even happens in those big heavy crown vics! (GASP) Police spend substantially more time behind the wheel than you do...and...it is behind the wheel of that big heavy car. You are correct when you say "little or nothing" makes the cruiser safer than the civillian car commiting the same traffic infractions. However...when you do it, one or two people say "look at that jerk" when an officer is doing it, the blanket statement, "all police do that all the time and nothing ever happens to them. Well, the fact is that officers assume and accept the risks inherent to their job. This includes the way they HAVE to drive to get their job done. Of course I suppose if you call the police for help, you would EXPECT a hasty response and "smack talk" them if they didn't arrive within whatever imaginary time line you set for them and, I hasten to add you probably wouldn't come down on them too hard if they did run a few stop signs and sped to answer your call. I reiterate what I have said in the past...lights and sirens cause people to get stupid. They stop in front of you. Turn in front of you. Turn around and look at you and host of other unexpected bone head movements. Finally, in response to Rob...although I respect your opinions and your expertise as it relates to BMW's and this list, I can't help but think you are exaggerating here. w sdmmmean, I drive these police cruisers and 130 mph is significantly pushing these cars to their limits. But hey...you are the expert...it's just what I do for a living so how would I know? FWIW, those "important police things" you spoke of in your earlier post are what police, sheriffs and troopers do. Probably 65% of arrests of your "real criminals" come out of traffic stops for minor traffic violations. Think about that. I have arrested murderers, dopers, pushers, child molesters and rapists from your "meaningless" traffic stops. THAT, my friends is what really goes on out there. Regardless of what you think happens, or your opinions on how we do our jobs. You are making an UNINFORMED decision based on opinion, conjecture and (boo hoo) mob rule. Thank God we live in america so we are entitled to our opinions. It just seems like deliberately spreading misinformation based on feelings not fact is inappropriate. That said, I will re-enter lurk mode and enjoy this forum. Thanks to all who provide it and all who contribute, making life a little better for us all.
