I owe your son a beer. That story gets me giggling by the time you
get to "air compressor"!

I just had a thought - if you're a lying, delusional psychopath, would
it be spelled "kompressor"? DOH!

Legal as can be. There are rules about straddling lanes and you are
*supposed* to only pass on the driver's side of the vehicle being
passed. But mostly everyone ignores that part.

On I-5 I won't do it. The lanes are too narrow. But on I-15 in rush
hour traffic you can find 6 feet or so between the traffic stopped in
the far left lane and the next one on the right. I-15 is 4 lanes wide
in each direction. So instead of sitting in a bumper to bumper crawl
you can ride a bike and do 25-40 between the lanes. I refuse to pass
another car over 45 mph thats moving or 25 when they're stopped, but
AFAIK thats not a legal requirement. I've never had a problem but have
seen a couple of the full dresser's that can't lane-share get rear ended
sitting stopped.

Some people certainly ride full dresser's, along with boxer's in this
situation. But mostly its crotch rockets, singles and v twins out
there. Much more manueverable, at least psychologically to me.

Scott, why not fix the problem instead of masking it ?

Most likely, the OBC relay box above the drivers feet has some corrosion or
cracked solder joints.

It's a black box with two green connectors. If memory serves me correctly,
one is four pin, the other 3 pin.

I forwarded the link to a non-car-buff coworker and he smugly said, "Well, if
he built the car because he couldn't afford a Ferrari, why didn't he just build
a life size one? Just take the drawings and multiply by 5." LOL.

I am going to sell the 2002 I've been fixing up to drive daily (because
it really isn't the right car in Southern California for driving 2 smallkids
around to school and day care every day).

This car was originally purchased for the wheels only -- I thought I
would part it out originally. Imagine my surprise when we discovered
what a wonderful car it was. After 12 hours of polishing and waxing,
it turnedout to be a very pretty car too. Here are some of the details:

'76 2002
* Navy blue (original color, very rare Medium Metallic blue: Arktisblau
Metallic)
* Some surface rust near trim; no rust in the trunk wheel well, shock
towers, or rocker panels at all
* evidence of being tagged on passenger side rear, but excellent repairwork
* seats have an expensive re-upholster look to them (a little too much
stuffing, but good stitch work; no rips or tears)
* I'll order a new carpet kit for it
* In the process of refurbishing the heater unit
* 158-156-159-160 compression; passed California smog legally and easily
less than 30 days ago (can be used for title transfer up to 90 days after
the test)
* registered in California to Jan/2001
* very good 4-speed
* most of the driveline (flex disk, center support/bearing and driveshaft)
recently replaced
* good brakes
* rod out the radiator and new thermostat (runs halfway up the temp guage
and stops)
* all lights and gauges work
* sunroof works great
* new 165/80-13 tires with 60K mi. warranty from America's Tire (Discount
Tire); BTW, they are pretty skinny so they follow the rain grooves inthe
freeway.
* new battery
* new front windshield gasket and beading

Some of things it needs:
* clutch slave cylinder is seeping...

I am going to get $2500 for it with clutch slave replaced, the carpetkit
installed and the heater core repaired and installed. Act quickly (before
I do these three things) and I'll knock it down to the first $1800. I've
driven the car on 4 trips of over 200 miles round per trip in the last
2 weeks. A very nice car to drive.

Contact me for terms of delivery if you want it up in Northern California...
I might be able to work out quite a deal for you.

Duane if I remember right, weren't you one of the folks crying to keep CCA
Politics off of the digest and that's one of the reasons you gave for
starting up your own list? What (or who) has changed your mind?
I think the folks on this list can certainly contact the candidates and ask
any question they want to and I encourage them to do so.
As for your agenda, I can think of couple good reasons why I wouldn't want
national to implement either program. One involves control and one
involves money.

Now back to our regular "bashing".

Real Media files are highly compressed to begin with. There is not much
benefit to zipping them, in fact they may end up bigger. If you can't stream
the file (view it while it downloads) try right clicking and doing a File
Save As... then you can try opening it with Real Media player.

(it is an impressive story, but I don't know too many people who would spend
15 years of their spare time doing something that involved. I'll bet he
doesn't subscribe to too many mail lists!)

Hopefully I'm not spilling over too much into the technical weenie stuff, but,
the reason why it's better to zip them is that you then deal with the standard
way of downloading things over the internet. You can't just right click on a
.rm file and save it to the hard drive. The real audio plugin and I would
assume the web server go through some weird protocols and ports in an effort to
not allow you to save them to the disk. In order to save the files, you need
to actually purchase the "gold" version of their software.

FWIW,
Chester

We used to service two M1s years ago. Water pumps went bad often and back
then I think BMW would sell you one (if you bent over and walked through
the Parts department door backwards) for around $700. One of our customers
took the pump to a truck repair place that worked on his refrigerated fleet
of ice trucks and had a new bearing and seal installed in the old one for
$36. I don't think they cared what it came off of. BMW wanted around $65
for an oil filter and, being a Porsche dealer as well as BMW, we couldn't
resist trying the 911 oil filter for about $12 which, other than the
profile of the o-ring, was an exact duplicate. After Gordon Medenica blew
a New Old Stock oil filter on his M1 in the first stop on the One-Lap years
ago, he asked me if I had another one. He'd just paid the price of gold
for the one he got from his local (BMW owned) BMW dealer. What do you
expect of a 15 year old rubber gasket. Gordon now uses the 911 filter and
recommends it to his M1 register members.

Duane,

I like the autocross idea. But I think you really want all the chapters
to have autocrosses so that you can go and kick butt in that new seven
sled of yours.

As for the national instructor database, I also like this idea and I
know that this has been discussed for a while on the national board. I
also know that the Driving Events Committee asked to be involved in
making this decision. Makes sense - they oversee all the chapter
driving schools, keep the official Driving School Standards up to date,
etc. Well, at the national board meeting in November '99, the official
Driving Events Committee report was that they were not going to push for
the national database, and actually recommended against it. I believe
the reasons why included manageability, subjectivity, etc. Maybe some
DEC members are on the digest and can answer your expected question of
"why?" more fully.

And, yes, while who you vote for Exec VP does matter, he's just 1 vote
of 9. I'd hate to see someone elected because they promised to fulfill
your dreams of the national instructor database or the autocross program
and then see that person not be able to fulfill their promises because
they got outvoted.
