As I indicated in my previous post, this is the third "Check Engine" indication I've received in about two months. Newbold BMW in O' Fallon, IL checked the entire sensor circuit and swapped a new sensor in-and-out several times and compared voltages. They confirmed the old sensor, albeit only about a month old, was in fact dead. The service rep then called BMW Technical to ask if they had seen any such "rash" of O2 sensors failing in these engines, but this had not been observed. He could offer no explanation as to why the part failed again, since there are no other indications for any problems in the engine. I was happy with their initiative to figure out the gremlin. Bottom line, a new sensor was installed free of charge, along with a promise if it happens again to have the regional factory mechanic look at it. So my fingers will stay crossed with O2 Sensor #4! ---------------------- end. I hope I'm not reviving an old, dead thread here, folks, but I'm shopping around for a set of lightweight 17" wheels for track/autox use on an E36 (yes, like another digester recently referred to, I have a bit of an obsession with wheel weight and unsprung weight in general). Of course, there's a wrinkle in the plan (isn't there always?) and I'm trying to stick to a budget of around $300 per wheel max (otherwise, I'd simply pick up the phone and call Fikse!) So, having said that, I'm looking at either Borbet type E's (~20 lbs, $229) or SSR Integrals (~16 lbs, $309). Prices and weights are according to the TireRack. I know that Borbet makes a decent product, but SSR is new to me. Does anyone have any experience with either of these manufacturers/wheels, or even better, recommendations of other candidates? Looks are NOT the key consideration here... (although I draw the line at those Teddy Bears Duane was thinking of installing on the Seven Sled... :-) Price and weight are the most important variables. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! Felipe. So you would pass on the left of a car but stay in the same lane with it. Yeah, right. But hey, I never said it made sense. But I'm willing to take advantage of any law that gets me down the road quicker. Considering I barely pay attention to traffic laws that *DO* make sense, I'm the wrong guy to ask the why and wherefore of the legal system. Passed 3 cops on the right this morning while they were stuck in traffic. On the right side. It didn't even phase them. Considering 'most' drivers tend to favor the left portion of their lane, most open space is on the right side. Why they wrote the law for the left side is beyond me. Nor do I much care. If the cops don't enforce that rule, considering all the other stupid stuff they do pull you over for, it must be a really insignificant thing. BTW, these laws out here are not specifically for motorcycles. You can drive a pair of Honda Civics side by side in a single highway lane if you don't take up more than that one lane. Amazing huh? Anything to keep the beast that is California traffic actually moving. I was waiting in line behind a bunch of cars at a drive through window here in Northern VA this afternoon. The two recent storms have dumped about 18" of snow in an area that is not known for efficient snow removal. Let's just say that this fast food parking lot was about half hard packed snow and half glacial ice pack. Each time a car left the food window I got quite a show as the other cars inched forward. First was a jacked up Jeep Wrangler on bald, balloon tires. The driver had to rock the vehicle several times to get it moving and then it would slide sideways when the brakes were applied. Next up was an Explorer on all seasons. Lots of wheel spin and nearly as much motion sideways as forward, but it could stop more quickly than the Jeep. The entertainment champ, was the FWD Escort on worn out all seasons. He would saw at the wheel with his foot way in the gas, resulting in a spectacular shower of snow. Next, two construction workers would jump out of a FWD minivan and help push the thing one car length forward before jumping back inside. And finally, some clown (me) with an old, 'they suck in the snow' E28 535 on nearly worn out Blizzacks and 200 lb. of sand in the trunk would put it in gear and effortlessly inch forward and stop on a dime. Before leaving the parking lot with my food, I watched a new Probe slowly slide backward and come gently to rest against another parked car. Looked like it had some nice all seasons on it, too. My 5'er just tiptoed right around the carnage and I was out of there. So there you have it. FWD and AWD won't do you much good if you don't have rubber designed for the snow. And barely passable snow tires can transform an otherwise crummy snow car into a decent way to get around. Thus ends today's lesson (for those of you not already in the choir). BTW: I have a decent set of 4 Pirelli P210 snows, 205/55/16 (I think), that I need to get rid of. Can be had for cheap. Anyone? - --Jeff Pharr '86 535i <- good snow car '89 325iX <- really good snow car ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2000 15:31:43 -0500 From: "Steve D'Gerolamo" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Lightweight Brakes For folks looking for the latest in braking technology, there is talk in Europe of popular brake kits (BMW, Audi, etc) based on Porsche's new ceramic rotors. Production will not commence until after the 996 turbo is officially released in Europe (I think the ceramic brakes will be an $8-10k option on these cars). Disks are likely to be 350x32mm. Pads will have special stainless steel backings. Calipers will probably be yellow. Do you need this brake setup on your street car.....absolutely not! As ceramic brake rotors currently cost 4000dm each, realize this setup will be very expensive. The rotors are approx 1/2 the weight of similar size cast iron disks and should have a much longer life. This all comes at a premium which is likely to be a popular option for customers of Porsche's new flagship vehicle.
