There is no law making it illegal. If an officer feels you are being unsafe, you'll be cited. Also, passing on the right is permitted on roads with more than one lane in the same direction of travel. California is very flexible, just make sure you know what you're doing. CA Vehicle Code is available online as a .pdf Eric GGC 87 E30 M3 94 Ducati M900 Previous bikes included Ducati 851, BMW R90, R100RS and K1 Passing on the Right 21754. The driver of a motor vehicle may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions: (a) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn. (b) Upon a highway within a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles in the direction of travel. (c) Upon any highway outside of a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width and clearly marked for two or more lines of moving traffic in the direction of travel. (d) Upon a one-way street. (e) Upon a highway divided into two roadways where traffic is restricted to one direction upon each of such roadways. The provisions of this section shall not relieve the driver of a slow moving vehicle from the duty to drive as closely as practicable to the right hand edge of the roadway. Step 1. Press and hold the mileage reset button. Step 2. Put key into ignition switch and turn to KLR (Ignition switch position #1) Your LCD display will show something like this "tESt 01" Step 3. Once "tESt 01" is shown, let go of reset button and the IC (Instrument Cluster) will go through some test cycles. Numbers will be shown and here's what they mean: Test 01: BMW PART NUMBER (6 digits) Test 02: CODE NUMBER (5 digits) Internal Coding Plug # Test 03: K NUMBER (4 digits) Test 04: CHASSIS NUMBER (5 digits) this is part of your VIN Test 05: SOFTWARE VERSION (3 digits) Test 06: REVISION INDEX (2 digits) Hardware # After all 6 tests are finished an analog gauge test will be performed. Watch the TACH hit 8000rpms =) The self-test is canceled by switching the ignition off or to KL-15 (ignition switch position 2) NOTE: Just for the hell of it. KLR means ignition switch position #1 (accessory) KL-15 is ignition switch position #2 (on), and KL-50 is igition postion #3 (start) This works on all instrument cluster on E36 3-series from 1992 through 1999. If you have a post '97 4 door/coupe/convertible/M3, '95-present 318ti, '96 - -present Z3, you can do tests including a digital tachometer and yes it can be used while driving although I don't recommend it. If I'm not mistaken (which I probably am), the 8 series was still being produced for non US markets up until fairly recently. Like less than a year ago? The E-31 was never very well recieved on these shores. Thought to be too heavy, gimmicky, etc. But from what I can surmise, it didn't recieve all that kind of flak overseas. Look in BMW Car (U.K. mag) and you'll see 8 series cars throughout, even if only in advertisements. Personally, I like 'em. I'd even settle for an "anemic" 840 if the opportunity ever came about. Let's just >say that this fast food parking lot was about half hard packed snow and half >glacial ice pack. <snip> I am also in the Northern VA area. The problem I am now having wrt to the snow removal is the center lane has a ridge of ice pack in it. The car, 95 M3 with Pirelli 210's snow tires drives just fine, plenty of traction. Except I have the Bilstein/H&R combo on it and it is bottoming out on these hard center ridges. One of these days I'll tear off the front spoiler. Oh well. I have taken to riding the tires on the ridge and moving over to the right or left. Seems a bit much to swap out the entire suspension for winter. My favorite bonehead Expedition/Suburban/Jeep move is when people drive slowly down into a valley between two hills and then get stuck trying to drive up, instead of building up a little speed and making it over the hump. It's really amazing how the poor snow removal and clueless drivers combine to make for total chaos in one of the worst traffic congested areas in the country. I am so glad I have a home office. I have been eyeing those new Toyota Tundras lately as a winter beater. Dirt cheap relatively speaking for a big DOHC V8, 4WD truck. I guess they are dumping them in the US, similar to what they did early on with Lexus vs. Benz and BMW, to gain market share from the domestic truck brands. - -Al 95 M3 PS: Just noticed your e-mail address. Hi all, The subject line tells the tale...recently my V1 started sounding laser alarms from the side and rear while I was washing my windshield ( in a '97 E39 ). I've replicated this enough times , and in enough locations, to be sure that there is no laser equipped minion of the police lurking in the bushes with his binoculars trained upon my windshield washer control stalk... Has anyone encountered this? My V1 is hard -wired to the fuse box, and mounted at the top of the windshield, to the right of the rear view mirror. Does the E39 use fiber optics ? Do I have a laser leak in my interior? Is this related in any way to the fact that when I use the steering wheel controls to change cd's or phone numbers, my service l.e.d.s glow faintly more fiber optics? ) I can hardly wait to explain this one to the service guys... any thoughts? Phil.....what a great idea! I think it most appropriate to try that. I've created the list. Let's try it out, then.....and see what happens. Here's the address to sign up at. http://www.onelist.com/community/BMWCCAtalk When you make a post as a member, you'll send it to : [EMAIL PROTECTED] I suggest you option for the Daily Digest instead of Individual e-mails on it. You select that option yourself under 'Member Services'. The default is individual e-mails as they come into the onelist server. It's an open list, and you have to do is a quick "member sign-up" to get on if you're not a ONELIST member already. Don't worry, you can put as much or as little info in the signup sheet as you deem appropriate and they do not spam you once they have your address. At least they haven't yet and I have built (3) lists on there already. Note that this list is in NO WAY endorsed or approved of by BMWNA, any CCA office or officers, Roundel, Chapters, lawyers, driver school committees, club racers, advertisers, q-tippers, dealers, writers, scalliwags or <long breath> anyone remotely affiliated in a power position with the CCA in any way, shape or form. It's a discussion list, that's all. If it goes nowhere, and we have no members, it will dissappear. If it turns into a nasty, personal insult list it will be canned. If it becomes somewhat useful (fingers crossed) then we'll have yet another tool to hopefully assist and influence the elected Club Officers in making policy decisions and exploring ideas a bit. Then again, they may simply ignore it. I'll turn over moderation of this list to someone who is a sucker...err.....ahhh.....well-liked by all and respected for their impartiality <g> once we get it active.
