<<The subject line tells the tale...recently my V1 started sounding laser
alarms from the side and rear while I was washing my windshield ( in a '97
E39 ).....

....Has anyone encountered this? My V1 is hard -wired to the fuse box, and
mounted at the top of the windshield, to the right of the rear view
mirror...>>

Strangely enough, each time I pull up to the front door of the dry cleaners,
I get a laser false alarm. It doesn't go off when driving by or away, only
when I drive right up to it.

We'll have to get Keith Battan's permission. Remember, I'm hoping to
marry him off to Keith's daughter. Alex isn't going along with the idea
yet but if he wants to inherit I'm sure he'll fall into line.

Howdy,

 http://www.drive.com.au/exec/main.asp

is where you will find an Australian test drive of the M5. I've watched
it over and over again. Its just that good :-). If someone could save it
to disk for us (the T1/LAN version), we would all be grateful.

Another quick question. I love my E30 325i for its ability for the more
revs you give it the more it pulls. Almost like a mild turbo. Are new
BMW's like this, with the 'on cam' effect?. I've not been in a new BMW
(E36/E34 ->) so I don't know what they are like.

 Cheers.

Subject: [uuc] <E30 M3> Supercharger?

I friend of mine (I'll call him John, because that's his name) with a
pristine E30 M3 and many, many days at drivers' schools would like to
supercharge his car. I told him I would solicit the advice of this group
to see if we could steer him down the correct path.

1. Is anyone making a supercharger set-up for the E30 M3? Who?

2. Is it street-legal in California? (I don't know if this is one of his
requirements, but he lives in CA.)

3. How much would it cost my friend to add one to his car? Parts only, if
it comes that way? Installed? John is a competent wrencher, but he may
feel lazy when it comes time to install it.

4. Does it come with a warranty? How long? What is covered?

If you have one on your car or are otherwise familiar with a supercharged
E30 M3:

5. How is the performance?

6. How is the maintenance?

7. How is the reliability?

I'll pass on your comments and advice to John, and then we'll see if he's
still as serious as he sounded when he brought this up yesterday.

TIA,

Anybody else notice that this particular F1 is NOT wearing U.S. bumpers or
headlights? Although most U.S. McLaren owners have restored their cars to
the factory condition (R&T had a picture of how hideous the DOT spec bumpers
and headlights really look), the fact remains: (correct me if I'm wrong
here) this car is located in Europe, and thus will have to undergo a process
similar to the VERY PRICEY job Ameritech does on U.S. bound F1's to insure
their street legality.

Happy Bidding, and taxation, and insurance, and fuel consumption, and oh,

Hi all,

I have a friend who is looking to buy an E30 M3 located in the 216 area

would appreciate a recommendation.

My understanding is that the motorcycle lobby here made a horse trade with
the legislature back when mandatory helmet laws were introduced. This has
no basis in evidence, just what I've heard.

It works surprisingly well -- as a rider, you have to be watching for
people changing lanes without a glance, a signal, or a clue, but honestly,
a) it's no different than if you were on a bike minding your own business
in the middle of your own lane and b) it's stunningly easy to predict the
movements of traffic-bound cars -- I often know that someone will do
something stupid before they do it, because I can see the opportunity
opening up before them.

I wonder how much pocket change I have... better check the penny jar.

The McLaren F1 is my ultimate fantasy car. There are so many places I
would drive to, and so many people I would love to drive it in front
of (back in Singapore, my snob cousins, highschool reunion, BMW club
meetings, to the mall...). Sigh, possibilities are endless. There
would be no such thing as a "short drive".

I wonder what reasons the last owner has for giving up such a
gorgeous road beast? We should keep track of this auction and see how
high the bids go.

Otto's BMW in West Chester PA had a low mileage used one in their new
car showroom a month ago when I was in picking up my M5. I forget the
exact mileage on it but it was very low and the car looked brand new. I
was looking at it while waiting for my salesman to finish dicking around
with my paperwork and thought to myself - self this is one neat car
maybe I want it more than my 5, then I came to my senses. So many cars,
so few $$$.

These are the stock tires from the '99 328is sport package
16x7" wheels, 225/50ZR-16, approx 8K miles, clean, no scuffs,
no track time. Recently removed to install winter tires on
the stock wheels. Tires are as described. Tire rack lists
these 'ultra high performance tires' (their description) for
$160-$200+ each. I would like to get $400 plus shipping for
the set, would prefer/will deliver in DC area. Thanks.

Subject: [uuc] E28 Rubber Seals

Chris asked:

Just thinking about what DIY project to do on my "new" car. How hard
is it to replace the rubber seals on the trunk and doors? Has anybody
actually, successfully, done this at home? I haven't taken too close
a look, but the seals are permanently glued to the bodywork right? Is
it possible to strip them off and get fresh(er) seals from the junker
or BMW. What would I use to glue them on with?

I have purchased but not yet installed a trunk seal for my E28. It is
glued to the car, and several digesters recommended 3M trim adhesive and
adhesive remover products based on their experience.

The door seals -- at least the front ones that I have looked at --- are
squashed down into a sort of 'C' channel and don't appear to be glued in.
Mine have pulled out a bit where they catch on my Thule rack, and I just
pushed them back in with a screwdriver.

Hi Matt--

There is a new law from the DOT, stating that "Rare/Show/Race" vehicles
which have no comparable US model may be listed as exempt, certified and
issued road licenses. (This means you can bring in and license European
cars such as F1's, 959's or XJ220's, but not for example a euro-version
Ferrari 550 Maranello, as there is a US model.)

I believe these cars are limited to 2000-3000 miles per year to be driven on
public roads. Each car must go through an application/evaluation process
through the DOT.

>From what I've heard, this license is very pricey, but if you can afford a
McLaren F1, I doubt that would be the greatest of your concerns...maybe your
greatest worry would be having to say "No your Honor, I wasn't going 185mph
in a 55-zone, I was going 185mph OVER the limit!" :)

Ciao,
Byron
