Subject: [uuc] Alpine CD changer interface adapters FS...may be WOB

Following my custom , I was in a surplus store today and saw something that
MIGHT be attractive to you Stereo-zoners . Apologies in advance if it is a
WOB....
Anyway ,this place had about 40 brand-new in the boxes Alpine CD changer
interface adapters 'for selected GM Vehicles'...PLEASE note those letters GM
. Model number KCE-202B .Have short wires and DIN(?) connectors wired in.
To quote from the literature "This interface is designed to be used with
Alpine CD changers using "M-bus" protocol .These include the 5960, CHM-S601
,CHM5611. The CHA-S604 and CHA-S614 can be used with a KCA-130B adaptor "

All that is gibberish to me -a 'turn it on to play' radio operator -but I
wondered if the more 'tuned-in' amongst us would know if these things might
be useable with the older Alpine CD players used in BMWs?.The ones everyone
sez they cant get to work or get parts for...
For $10 apiece ,anyone want to play?..plus $3.20 shipping from Seattle.
NO smart-ass comments about GM radios in BMWs are needed.....

Of course, they MAY all be sold by now , to some tuned in guy who can
connect his knee to his eyebrow and get music.

sounds like gunked up sensor wheels at the hubs.

> I have heard something in the past about checking some relay with a fuse on
> it or something like that. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

if the relay (silver one under dash to the left of steering column) is
dead then the abs
light will be on all the time (ie during start up and forever after)

or is that off all the time (even during startup)

anyways, sounds like wiring and everything check out ok (self test light
comes on/goes off)
but once moving it can't figure out the signal and shuts down (and
signal comes from hall
sensor/ toothed wheel)

Subject: [uuc] CA Lane Splitting

As a rider who has been all over this country for an extended 6 week ride,
IMHO, splitting lanes in CA traffic is easy, and safe. For one, Californians
don't weave from lane to lane as they do on the other coast, and most don't
drive faster in the right lanes, like they do in Boston!! And if I remember
correctly one can only split when traffic is moving less than 35 mph. And
I'll never ride a motorcylcle in MA. again under any circumstances!!

Californians are also used to sharing the road with bikes all year long,
and expect a bike to move out of traffic and split lanes when the going gets
slow. Back here on the other coast car drivers would just as soon run you
off the road regardless of season.

I clearly remember that as soon as I crossed into Pennsylvania that drivers
were much less attentive to a biker.

A much more experienced rider than myself once told me that a biker always
needs to be in control of traffic surrounding him, and the only way to
ensure that was to always ride a minimum of 2-5 mph faster than prevailing
traffic.

geez! you guys take the hard way..

to see the tach hit 8000rpm just shift from 5th to 2nd while doing
100mph..

oh wait, you M3 guys already know *that* trick :)

my V1 will give false laser alerts when the electrical system in the car is
somehow distressed (i.e., slipping alternator belt, alternator gets real wet,
etc). i've had this thing in two cars (VR6 corrado, E36) with exactly the
same symptoms (for example, if i drive through a huge puddle i'm guaranteed a
false laser alert). i'd be really interesting to see the power to this thing
with a scope when this happens... not sure if it's just a voltage dip or
certain noise pattern that sets it off... but it's real predictable (and
pretty f---ing anoying).

perhaps you're experiencing just the right kind of noise when you run your
wipers? maybe relocating the power feed to the V1 would make for an
interesting test? try tieing it right to the battery & see if that changes
anything.

Engine runs great. Has a problem stalling at
intermitent times, I have been told it is the

Bridgestone tires with gold alloy wheels.
Car was bought in Phoenix where parts and mechanics
were easy to find, now I live in southern Colorado
where neither are available.
Price is $1900.

I have never once had problems with my snow vehicle, actually I recommend you
get one for snow duty. It is a 92 Ford Aerostar XLT 4WD. Just the right ride
height wonderful 4WD system even on Firestone FR480 tires, never got it stuck
once even though I spent 2 hours trying the day of the big DC snow.

I haven't been stuck in my latest of snow vehicles either. Even with
now up to my knees (yes, it was over 3"), in 4wd, the tank didn't
ever hesitate, even with those miserable Firestone Steelex things.
There's nothing better than looking OVER those Sports Useless
Vehicles as their drivers panic at the sight of solid and semi-solid
percipitation. FWIW, Firestones SUCK!! They're only paralleled by
General tires for the worst rubber on the road.

Maybe one reason it is allowed in CA is one of emissions. People see that
bikers get places faster, and lose less gas, and take up less space on the
freeway and in parking areas. Hopefully that gets people to buy cleaner and
smaller motorcycles instead of gas-hogging cars. Whether or not it was a
reason to enact this law, the result is still the same.. a cleaner
environment, and faster traffic flow.

Grant - glad Indiana has NO emissions checks.. annoying (even though the
concept is a good idea..)

Just a quick update on the Rolex. I went to the track today to see our area
and make sure it was ready. The best way to get there is to drive through
the tunnel entrance and follow the road straight ahead through the bend to
the right. Just after the bend you will see a fenced in area on the right.
That is us! From what the track told me we are in between the cobra and
corvette corrals. They also told me that porsche was not having a corral
this year. Maybe too rich for them :-) There will be a welcome recpetion at
the host hotel and a bar-b-que lunch in the corral on saturday. Again
parking in the corral will be for BMW's ONLY so please don't ask if you can
park your buick rent a wreck or worse you p-car inside........

Subject: [uuc] Another type of "lane splitting"

While living with a family in Helsinki, Finland a few summers ago I witnessed
some really interesting driving....good driving that is. One example stands
out.

If you are driving on a rural two lane road and want to pass the car ahead of
you, you simply turn on your left turn signal. The car you are passing will
move about four feet to the right and onto the shoulder, while maintaining
his speed. Meeting traffic is no problem. They see your turn signal and
move to their right so that you now have a lane in the middle. You move left
about halfway (straddling the center line) and make the pass. Everyone is
happy and everyone works together. Of course, it surprised me the first time
it was done. After that, I was doing it too.

Yes, it takes some thinking, some planning, and some watching. In other
words, I don't see it working here anytime soon. ;-)
