Hi Dave,

I've been driving the same year / powertrain car for 41k, and never
experienced what you've described...it's not normal.

Good luck,

Mike

I find most people in California think lane splitting is illegal also.
I actually did it in my 535 a few weeks ago in stopped traffic on the
Santa Monica freeway in full view of 4 CHP cruisers. Check your state
laws to get the facts before assuming it's illegal where you live. Of
course the CHP and most local police here in Northern CA are REALLY nice
and will only pull you over if you're doing TWO minor things wrong or
are doing something that's just plain stupid or dangerous.

I have a good few good stories about just that.....but we're all done
telling cop stories.

I am sure that there are lots of you with experience in this area. Which
types of radios work well in a car-to-car application? I believe that the
handheld CB radios do not work at all without an exterior antenna. I am
not too interested in spending several hundred dollars per radio. How
about those Family Radio Service units?

Stan

Yes. Good range, sound and excellent battery life. I have several
Motorola 250s. Great radio. Go to http://www.accompany.com and search
for them. Usually a good price discount.

Michael-- Since no one's mentioned it so far, I can't be sure if you know
that the otherwise-miraculous innards of the Valentine One can be
hypersensitive to electrical fluctuations in the car's system. Mine used to
laser false all the time, and as you discovered, it can make you mighty jumpy.

The fix was a brief, no-charge visit back to Val headquarters, where they
upgraded the software. It was a jittery few days, but the now the falsing's
gone gone gone. Might be worth a call to customer service.

Tom,
Your UUC answer is clear although the reward may be a year off.

1. Turn in the E36 M3 and get the Bright Red 323i.

2. Here's the tough part: Make the new car HER car and drive her '89
325i for awhile. Just tell her that you're concerned about her safety
and want her in the newer, safer, & (supposedly) less breakdown-prone
car.

3. Next year(or on the occasion of the first 5 figure repair on the E30)
it will be easy to justify to the SO that the E30 needs to be replaced.
This is when you go and spec out that sweet E46 M3 which will have all
the bugs worked out by then. She'll go along with this since YOU have
dealt with her old car for the past year while she had the benefit of a
new vehicle, which, of course, was your brilliant idea to make HER car.

4. Convert the E30 to your full time track car. If you're smart, you've
been doing UUC upgrades all along. You justify the conversion by
reasoning that track-prepping the M3 will cost more than what you'd get
out of selling the E30. Besides, you can't bear the thought of all the
stone chips track time is famous for on YOUR brand new car. And if
you're leasing, you don't want to have to take all that stuff off when
the lease is up. This isn't to say a few UUC upgrades won't slip onto
the M3.

Not true. It was legal long before then....

You are correct. Tom. It has been legal for a long time. My understanding
is that it was never made an illegal manuver because all motorcyles USED to
be primarily air cooled, and their smaller engines couldn't take the abuse of
idling in stopped traffic...

Henry, you can always give Valentine Research a call. I did when I
wondered about this. They will list of a variety of sources that will set
off the laser detector, including things such as neon signs. Does it go
off if you drive up to the dry cleaner's when they are closed and the sign
is off? :-)
