Lane Flynn asks about painting his M3 style double spokes.

Ed says: I had the local wheel shop (Ye Old Wheel Shop in Elkridge
Maryland) paint the centers of my 635CSi's BBS RKs in body colored
charcoal and polish the rim. They were incredible looking and garnered
many positive responses. I just had the same shop do the BBS style
factory rims (6 of them) for my 325is in the original silber color
because that car is all black and I wanted the visual impact of the
flashy silver on the blacked out car. Those rims have polished lips also
for definition. It is, of course a matter of taste, but anything just a
little different sets your car apart and says you care about what your
car looks like.

I recently read this somewhere....makes sense...sortof...

Get stuck with a frozen lock and no chemicals, hair dryer, etc., you simply
stick the whole key blade in your mouth until it's about 98 degrees body
temp, then stick it in the frozen lock. Supposedly it works, every time,
even though you may have to suck on it three or four times before the lock
gives it up.

Hey - if it doesn't work just think how stupid you'll look in the parking
lot sucking on your keys....

I have found the remove-the-hose-head-and-let-the-water-sheet-away method to be
very good in removing the majority of the water. For the few spots that
remain, a nice thick 100% cotton towel does the trick rather well. I used to
use the P21S chamois, but it doesn't hold up to more than 20 or so washings and
I always have visions of dirt embedding itself into the relatively shallow
surface of the chamois. Nice thick puffy towel for me! =)

Subject: [uuc] E30 speedometer cable help?

The speedo cable on my '91 325iC has both wires broken and corroded at the
connector into the diff. So, I would like to replace this cable.
Bentley unclearly referes to some sort of a connector under the rear seat,
but is mum otherwise. Can someone tell me how long the cable is, and if
there is indeed a break and a connector at the rear seat, or does it run
all the way to the dash? Please help, it's 20 degrees outside and I have no
garage :-(

Not to be one to crimp one's style - but the only body color painted
wheels on BMW's I've ever seen have been on Bimmers (usually E30's)
where the headlights were changed to those trick US rectangular
ones, and all the chrome was painted body color.. and happened
to be in a somewhat questionable neighborhood, and the guy driving
the car employed a number of young ladies of friendly demeanor.

Not that there's anything wrong with that..

I'd go for stock color, and look into Glazurit (spelling - Phil?)
clear as a topcoat. A friend did the ones on his Cobra, and then
finished with the Glazurit. This finish is very smooth (making them
easy to clean) and very hard (making the brake dust less likely
to penetrate and stick).

>One more quick question: is there any potential harm to the paint from using
>a squeegee to dry my car off after washing (assuming I don't drop it ;-)?

Yes - bad idea. Especially on a black car. There is a good chance
the squeegee will catch some tiny little particle of dirt or sand
or dust which is gonna scratch the heck outta your black paint.
(BTDT once..). I'd strongly suggest looking for "The Absorber",
the $10 or so artifical chamois. it is a wonderful thing that
really really works (and I'm not just saying this..). Get the
real one, not a cheap imitation. Leaves a very nice waterspot
free car with very little effort. Just open it up and drag
it across the wet car - it absorbs the water and the
minimal pressure means dust won't scratch the paint.

(I have no interest in whoever makes "The Absorber" - but
love them to death. Have one in the back of my coupe, one
I take on my real BMW - 2 wheels - on overnight camping
trips and use as a camping towel.. will dry ME off entirely
after a shower)

Duane,

I've been looking for a new family ride, and test drove the new Suburban and
the Land Crusher just last week...the new 'Burban is nice..tight, and
handles really well for something that huge...but the ergonomics, while
improved over the previous generation, still leave something to be
desired...36 mo lease, including tax, for a loaded ( $42 k sticker ) was
$600 per month.

The Toyo was an absolute dream to drive..smooth and responsive , a lot less
cargo space, an absolutely horrible stereo, and $815 per month ( same
terms ).

Unfortunately, both are bog slow compared to my old '96 454 'Burban...oh
well...guess I've been spoiled<g>

Subject: [uuc] taillight query

So I bought a used taillight from a guy for my 94 325is. Supposedly it
came off the same car. But there seems to be problem. It is missing one of
the little pins on its (male) side of the plug that connects it to the
electricity of the car. ANd so the taillight bulb doesn't work. My old one
had seven pins (one of the eight slots is empty) and this one only has six
pins (2 of the eight lots are empty). Is there an easy fix for this or
should I just return it to the guy? (Can I pull a pin out of the old one
for instance or are these things permanently attached?) Many thanks for
your advice on this.

Fwd from rennlist:
Subject: Announcing new DE/Autocross/etc. site!

We are pleased to announce the newest driving related web site:
        http://www.drivingevents.com/

This site came from the lack of a central repository of all driving
events nationwide sponsored by all organizations. Up until now,
someone looking for a local driving events had to search many individual
club web sites to find events local to them that met their schedule.
This site is perfect for those who wish to maximize their seat time by
finding events that have additional space available with the type of
track event they're looking for at a location near them.

Some of the key features of this site include:

- - A familiar calendar user interface for the calendar of events.

- - Automatic E-mail notification of new events added to the calendar.
This now customizable to allow you to specify only the geographic
  regions you are interested in.

- - Event organizers can quickly and easily add their own events to the
event calendar 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Events can later be
modified or deleted by the person who added them if the need should
  arise.

- - General driving events message board with a familiar and easy to use
  interface.

- - Driving resources. Just getting started but will include track info,
hot lap video and a variety of other resources useful to enthusiasts
  like us.

- - And much more!

This site is now considered officially released but we still value your
input. Please check it out and send us comments, ideas and most
importantly bug reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks for your time.

You're picking up the infrared door openers I bet.

You can get a mountable power plugged basic unit with mag mount antenna for
$40, much better than the handhelds. I just drop it in the console.
Verified my Cobra range at 7 mi. with Mike Gayle at O'fest '97. I suppose
FRS will replace CB usage eventually.

Works better. Fits perfectly to the inside of the shield, and avoids
the double-surface glare I found impossible to live with on a FogCity.
Also - cannot absolutely cannot - fog it up. See a tiny bit of
condensation down at the very bottom edge where my nose exhales..
but it doesn't fog. Also good price and made to fit, and easy to
take out to clean.

Dark visor - I use a SunDowner strip across the top.. electrical tape
would prolly work just as well and cheaper.
