Wheel color is personal. I happen to LOVE black or dark gray wheels.
Gives it a real "bad dog" look.

If anybody has a good pic of a black M3 with those wheels, I'd be
happy to Photoshop it.

Subject: [uuc] FW: SA-2000 (Auto Racing Helmets), when available?

I thought you all might like to see the response I received from the Snell
Memorial Foundation with respect to the questions I posed regarding the
upcoming SA-2000 helmet standard...

Regards,
Dave

- -----Original Message-----
Dear Mr. Heckendorf,

The SA-2000 standard will take effect later this year. We are attempting to
time its implementation for the start of the 2001 season production cycle.
We always urge racing authorities to allow helmets certified to the current
Snell standard and to the one immediately previous. This would mean that
SA-90 be accepted through the end of this year's racing and that SA-95 be
good though year 2005.

The only significant difference between SA-95 and SA-2000 is that we're
performing impact testing 1 centimeter lower in the brow area of the helmet.
We've found that a some of the helmets certified to SA-95 already meet this
requirement and many of the remaining models are within an eyelash of it.

The changes in successive standards are minor. Helmet technology is pretty
mature so it would take a breakthrough in materials or design to permit any
dramatic increase in protective performance. The incremental changes we've
introduced for SA-2000 won't produce any discernible reduction in injury.
However, we have noted that wear and tear take a toll on a helmet and
recommend routine replacement at least every five years. That five years is
from the date the box is opened rather than from the date the helmet was
made but, if you got an SA-95 model today, I'd urge you to start thinking
about a new hat any time in 2005. Statistically, you'd be just as safe in
an SA-95 helmet. The reason we make the changes is twofold, the increments
will add up and they keep pressure on the industry to seek out that next
breakthrough.

Thanks for your interest.

The nice thing about PB Blaster is that you can find it in most any auto
parts store, works very well too. However, I prefer a product from BG called
In-Force. Without a doubt the best penetrating oil I've used (wonder what
kind of smart aleck comments I'll get to that sentance? ;) ). If you can
find a place that sells BG products (they make a lot of other nifty products
too), it's worth giving a try. Maybe some of the "finer" import parts stores
will have it.

It's not mentioned in the owners manual, AFAIK. Just some
info I've picked up from various web sources over time.

Thanks for the kudos, re: My James Gang bit. I never like

Hah! While PB Blaster and In-Force are certainly fine products for use
on large parts or items that can't be removed to a workbench, nothing
can beat pouring a 2 liter bottle of Original Coke in a bucket and
soaking a part overnight. If it hasn't dissolved by morning, the part
will disassemble with ease.

A good friend of mine is a dentist. He told me that when he was in dental
school, they left a tooth in a flask filled with Original Coke. According

Yesterday after about 75 miles of back roads & highway driving VERY easy my
check engine light came on... & still is on after sitting overnight.. The car
appears to be running fine.. I spoke to the dealer & they cannot take me until
next Thursday... The car is a 97 M3 - 23K, the dealer said not to worry about
it...? I remember as a kid I had a friend with a blazer & his light was always
on & it did not seem to matter... But this scares me... Any experience? Should I
just keep on driving it?

this is a very standard school sciene project. the teeth look really cool
anyway, then you add various soft drinks & other fluids plus a little bit of
soaking time & presto !! fascinating colors & the like for everyone to see.

I was assured by my dealer's service dept. (remember, this is a dealer)
that the check engine light didn't have anything to do with the engine's
performance. As long as the computer check said OK, then the check
engine light wasn't a problem - something could have triggered it like a
loose fuel cap or something like that.

YMMV

Subject: [uuc] Speeding ticket/Traffic School/Cop story (long)

Well after 17+ years without a ticket of any kind (well okay, no
convictions anyway) I got nailed for speeding. It's my understanding
that in California you can have it wiped off your record after a year if
you go to traffic school and have no other moving violations during that
period. If you DO get any violations within a year you get stuck with
BOTH of them and you're out the traffic school fee too. I have serious
doubts about my ability to control my speed for a whole year, should I
just pay the fine and live with the one point on my record?
I didn't follow the 'Cop's suck' thread too closely but mine was fairly
cool.
This is what happened: I'm in the #1 lane moving right along when in my
side view I see
a BMW motorcycle closing at a VERY rapid rate. As it gets closer I can
start to make out the cutest little red & blue lights on the front.
Knowing for whom the bell tolls I start my journey to the shoulder but
deciding it is too small I get off at the next exit
and pull over. This is the exchange that took place:

Me: (as i hand him my license) Good morning, I wasn't ignoring you. I
just didn't want to pull over on that section of shoulder.
Cop: I appreciate that, I wish everyone would. Do you know why I pulled
you over?
Me: I might have been going a tad fast.
Cop: Do you know how fast you were going?
Me: hmmm, maybe 75ish??!!
Cop: What would you say if I told you you were doing 92 ?
Me: I'd say Shit, that sounds a lot more expensive than 75ish.
Cop: Are you still at the Shelter Island address?
Me: Yes.
Cop: What kind of plate is that on the front of your car?
Me: It's from a car I had back home in Scotland.
Cop: Are you aware you a required to have a proper California plate on
the front?
Me: Yes
Cop: Sit tight,I'll be right back.
Cop goes back to his ride to write it up then comes back.
Cop: Sign in the red box, you will be notified of your court date by
mail.
Me: (as I'm signing) How do you like your BMW?
Cop: It's great, very tight, very smooth.
Me: mmmmmm
Cop: Have a nice day and be safe. Oh, and get that plate back on the
front!
Me: No Problem!
When he leaves I check the ticket and he only wrote me up for 80 in a 65
and nothing about the front plate.

In California, you are allow to go to traffic school once per 18 months. If
the judge allows you to go to traffic school, the ticket still goes on your
record but is masked from viewing and points except for law enforcement (cops
and judges). Some court districts only allow speeding offenders to go to
traffic school for less than 15 over the limit.
