But Ren why the name "RICE" then ? Asian
Why not burger boys- American
pizza boys - Italian
Or my favorite fish & chip boys - English

I think riceboy is an Asian reference because, there are a large number of
Asian decent (mostly males) who modify their cars in a way which appears
strange to current western fashions.

Thus it is racial, weather intended as a slur or not.

As a side note, California law does not allow non-refundable deposits on cars,
regardless of what a dealer might have you sign... Most people do not know
this and amny dealers depend on that fact.

Marc, I'd have it checked pronto. There should be no 'grinding' on a
ticking lifter. NCC'er John Woodcock's white '97 makes a lot of ticking,
faster as rpm increases, but no grinding.

What? That you're an animal hater? PETA people will be calling on
you and dropping rabbit pellets on your car. <BFG> You'd have to

I don't know where you can get a BMW to rent in Orlando, but I did stop in a
place in Miami last week that was renting Boxsters and Corvettes for $275 a
day and a red F355 for $1100 a day!

Popping out of gear isn't good. I'd be more worried about the trans. The
only time I've ever heard of a tranny popping out of gear was just
before that gear failed. Am I right? Happened to me on a 911SC in 1st.
Starting popping out once in a great while, then more and more often.
Finally failing completely on the way to the shop. If you have the
tranny fluid changed, you can see what comes out. (metal bits, etc)

I hope I'm not mistaken, but I thought all of you might appreciate this even
if it concerns another fine marque. My wife was working out the payment on
our MBZ's lease with customer service. Unfortunately this took place in our
son's hospital room while he was screaming, a nurse was asking for info, the
IV's alarm was sounding...you get the picture. Based on the sound of chaos
in the room, MBZ's customer rep gave us a free pass on this month's payment
(that's right a free month!). Seems the reps have discretionary dollars for
situations like this. Actions like certainly generate good will (at least
for us).

BTW, our engine and brake booster blew up in the first three months of
ownership of the C230 Kompressor. MBZ and our dealership worked to get us
upgraded to a C280 by basing the lease on dealer cost (its hard to get more
than dealer holdback when you negotiate on your own).

It seems that most of the digest is relatively unimpressed with their dealer
(stealer) and BMW NA (I remember all the bad press years ago with 318 head
gaskets and missed shifts). I'm very impressed with MBZ in my first year of
ownership, but I still want a drivers car so I lust for BMW's.

Sorry for the wob.

Subject: [uuc] Maybe something to do with the riceboy question

At least this little discussion - and I hope it stays little - about
rice vs racist vs opinions vs feelings made me think of this. I think
it was the reply about putting all sorts of stickers and emblems on the
cars that don't belong there.

Anyway, here's the story:

Last year one of my friends was considering buying either a Mustang
Cobra or putting his name down on the waiting list for a Honda S2k.
Although the cars are very different animals, he was having a hard time
deciding - we were/are muscle car fans, but our tastes have grown to
appreciate more "subtle" cars. One of the things holding him back from
the Cobra was the Mustang driver's stigma. While vacillating between
the two, he asked his younger sister what she thought. Her response -
deadpan - when he asked whether she thought he should get the Mustang
was, "Joe, it has a horse AND a snake on it."

The S2000 was delivered about 3 months ago.

Don't worry, I tried to get him to get an M3.

... maybe Ken would be better off just buying an aftermarket air dam that

condition is not going to be easy, and the new parts are expensive.

Just more of my .02 cents worth.

A friend of mine leased a 2000 E39 540i 6-sp. It's a great car,
driving it belies it's size. For tossability, I think the M3 is a better
car. If you're friend has a family I'd say the E39 is a better sized.

Somehow I think one can have more fun in the smaller car.

Sorry but I had to chime in on this one.
Tommy, this has been discussed an all the different BMW boards
several times before. The term "riceboy" is often referred to a
person of any nationality or ethnic background that drives a
japanese car (which has progressed to also include Neons,
Escorts, etc, which should have been called "hot dog" or "apple
pie" boys?) that has been questionably modified its car to
somewhat resemble a GT race car (lowered, coffe can exhaust,
stickers everywhere, hughe wing, etc. You get the idea).

I also ride japanese sportbikes I I often get the comment that I
ride a "rice rocket". This wan't meant in a derogatory way, it just
simply means that I ride a bike that was made in Japan, the same
way the term "riceboy" is used to someone who drives a japanese
car modified as I mentioned before.

Now, I would love to own a Ducati 996, which would make me a
"pasta boy" I guess but unfortunately, I can't afford it at the moment.
Sorry for the WOB & enjoy your Bimmers & your Beemers.
