I'm amazed at the plethora of elaborate explanations and strained
interpretations regarding the riceboy reference. for those of you out there
who do not feel that this term is either derogatory or directed at Asians,
bully for you but you are wrong because it is both. and by the way it is
not for you to say whether Asians should take offence at what it either
means or not means-you're not the group affected. ask 100 people randomly
what ethnic group comes to mind with the term "riceboy"-what do you think
their response will be...........

OK, guys. There has been a dizzying array of tangential topics on
this subject. Many thanks. Just as thanks goes to ALL of you for
my request for info on "helmets", which morphed into "neck
collars", then far into Ofest hotel reservations, etc. I truly
love you guys! Thanks for the info. Jack and I will see you all
at Ofest -- in the bar or on the track :-)

The weights to use are:

45 kg (150lbs) in each front seat and in the center of the rear seat, plus
22 kg (45 lbs) in the center of the rear trunk, for a grand total of
157 kg (495 lbs), a full tank of gas, and spare installed.

Hope this helps,

I'm using Netscape 4 something. It sort of works with Netscape 3 on my
older computer put I don't have the MacroMedia plugin and I don't care to
install the MacroMedia plug in on that one.

I think it's a problem is in the style sheets.
For me to read the page I need to read the source.

IE5. That's a Micro$oft thing, isn't it?

I just purchased some used parts from Bill Proud in Seattle, and his was
one of the best experiences I've had to date with BMW related parts. He
sent me the part BEFORE he received my check! In fact, he got my check
the same day I got the parts. We really have a great group of folks on
this digest and the level of trust is really amazing. BTW, I live in
Alabama and in conversing with him, found out his wife is from
Huntsville, only 70 miles from here. Really a small world after
all(don't start singing).

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Misc questions

I got my car back from the body shop today, and *damn* does it look
good! I'm very happy, but I do have some (perhaps unrelated) problems
that I've noticed...

Questions for the accrued wisdom of the Digest:

What kind of connections are needed for the central locking to work?
Neither my passenger nor driver's side power lock any more. Moreover,
both lock mechanisms are stiff when actuated manually (either with the
key or the lock button). Any suggestions where I should start?

The little tab which goes on one side of the rear defrost grid has
fallen off. This means no more power to the defroster, which in
wintertime is bad news. I've tried wedging it back in between the
rubber (gasket?) and the grid, which has worked. Any other (more
permanent) suggestions?

Are all OBCs created equal? The writing on my OBC buttons has become
obscenely ugly, and I'd like to replace the unit. Would any 80s-era
BMW OBC fit/plug in properly (of course I'd swap the coding plugs)?

Has anyone done a dashboard swap on an E30? It seems a little sad to
have a severely cracked dash in such a pretty car... Any
tips/hints/warnings? (Other than Neil Deshpande warning me not to do
it! :-) )

Any hints for removing all of the dust (???) from the inside? It's
paint-job related, and a kind of beige colored chalky substance. It's
all over every little crack & I can see it driving me nuts really
quickly...

One last q: The bottom corners of my instrument cluster plastic cover
have turned opaque. It's not obscuring any of the instruments, but it
is a bit unsightly. Suggestions?

TIA.

James,

Is the Rieger kit still available? So you're selling all the body kit
pieces in addition to a set of wheels? No tires right?

How hard is it to intall this kit? I've heard some nasty stories of wide
body kits..hehe.

How much will you charge to ship it to California?

Let me know!

Thanks,

Richard

I was surprised the first time in person as well (LA Auto Show).... I have
to say, I expected the car to have more resemblence to a Land Rover given
the relationship there. Apparently we are driving them at the Ultimate
Driving Experience event this year so I'll let ya know what I think....

Jon... - hate Sport Utes.... They should outlawed as they are a danger to
the owners and everyone around them.

Being of asian descent, I appreciate the sentiment that you hold regarding
generalities that can be construed as demeaning, or perhaps even racist.

That said, I personally have no problem with this as I am a bit fed up with
these "riceboy" pukes drag race at 2:30am down the main thoroughfare around
my apartment with their "high-performance" sewer pipe exhausts blaring.

I don't care about those who deem vehicular aesthetics are enhanced when you
plaster them with decals or that they have tinting that would be appropriate
as visor shades for astronauts. It's the offensive- offensive to any
rational, law-abiding citizen/motorist- behavior that pisses me off enough
to use that term. The sheer lack of automotive knowledge of some of these
people is also quite annoying to boot. It's hard to have respect for someone
who thinks a four-cylinder variable valve timing/lift engine can
outaccelerate all six or eight cylinder cars.

"Riceboy" to me, used in the automotive context, holds no racist
connontations. Perhaps a little derogatory but certainly no worse than a
"F... you, j... off". A riceboy aka ricer aka riceburner, etc, etc. also
doesn't only apply to drivers of asian descent or automobiles of Japanese
origin, I know plenty of riceboy caucasians driving compact American makes.

OBMWC- My favorite "riceboy" comment as of late was, "My Civic Si with
Apex-i exhaust and lowered suspension smok'd one o' dem new BeeMmm-double U
M5's."

Indeed! Those assorted Mugen decals must turn your otherwise stock Civic B16
engine into one of those Jordan/Mugen Honda V10s... the coveted Type-R decal
must net 100lb-ft of torque alone.

It's been posted before nut check out <http://www.riceboypage.com> and get
another asian's viewpoint.

Also, for lots of laughs, log onto <http://www.speedmagazine.com>, check out
the Speed Tales pages. I can't read them while at work because i find myself
laughing and giggling uncontrollably after reading some posts.

Cheers,

Dunno why, but for some reason I just had this picture come to mind as I
read this, of Catherine Zeta-Jones wearing an itty-bitty bikini top
frolicking in the ocean at Malibu.......and as she comes out of the surf my
eyes are treated to her wearing Fisherman's Waders.

Mudflaps.
