My issue with Sport Utes is that 1: The height of the bumper is about the same or a little lower then the door handle on my M3. If I ever get broadsided by one I am a gonner. 2. On the freeway, I cannot see past one. 3: In Southern California, perhaps about 5% of Excursion owners actually have any real use for them other then to make some sort of fashion statement. 4. The majority of people who purchase sport utility vehicles in lieu of a less fashionable way to tote the kids around, seem to be under the odd illusion that they are driving a normal car and therefore drive in the fast lane on the freeway, cut lanes, don't seem to notice the HUGE blind side they have and change lanes directly into me on a daily basis etc. And, as I have witnessed on numerous occasions in recent times, then flip their huge truck - typically killing themselves, their kids or people around them. 5. My experience has been that people who drive pickup trucks, own them for a reason and seem to understand it is a truck and not a normal vehicle and drive accordingly. I'd rather have a parade of plumbers and contruction workers surounding me on the freeway in their Dualies then a single So Ca fashion geek cruising down the road in his 'Scursion..... According to MotorTrend Magazine the Ford Excursion Weighs in at 7,150lbs or 3.5tons (where as even the BIG new 2000 'Burban weighs 5,100lbs). It stops from 60-0 172 feet. It is 228 inches long, 78.3 inches wide and 80.8 inches tall. Lateral Acceleration and 600ft Slalom speeds or "N/A" (gee.... I wonder why that is. Perhaps MotorTrend editors aren't willing to risk their lives to get a couple of numbers?). Now, let's compare these numbers to what I would consider a big ass heavy passenger car: a 540i Wagen. Also according to Motortrend magazine, the BMW 540i Wagen weighs in at 4056lbs, and stops from 60-0 in 118 feet. Yeah folks, that is 55 feet less than Mr. Excursion.... What does this translate to? The person who just traded in their Toyota Camry for that cool new Excursion and doesn't understand these basic concepts in their 19 foot long, 3.5 ton Excursion just drove completely through your car when panic braking at a sudden stop behind you (as they still tailgate you on the freeway just like they did in the Camry - what's the difference right?). Therefore, they probably just killed you and your passengers. Jon - still hate utes and still say they are deadly. At a very minimum a different class license should be required to drive them. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2000 07:01:05 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Re: Mudflaps Mudflaps may be unsightly to some, but they do a damn good job of keeping saltbergs off the side of a Bimmer conscripted into winter duty. Most can't even check oil, let alone pick up a wrench. And, not to burst your bubble, but some of those tuned eastern imports are a hell of a lot of fun. There's a nice article in this month's Car and Driver regarding tuned four-cylinder cars. Even our own T.C. Kline is getting into them. FWD simply isn't my thing. Just signed up to BMW's "Owner's Circle" on their web site. It is a little buggy and not very functional at the moment but a cool concept none the less. In the future it appears they will provide access to your BMW Financial Services account, check your pay-off, payment history, schedule direct/automated payments etc etc. The only cool thing on there at the moment is a fully detailed description of the BMW Driving Schools which after reading the description looks a bit too sparse for a person like myself to make the trek from Ca to South Carolina..... But for those of you who happen to live near there, there is a one day "M School" where you drive M3s and M Coupes..... With the exception of the M5 school, the rest of them are in 3 series sedans and X5s on an autocross course and again only one day. Save the dough and go to Ultimate Driving Experience events for free... They sound about the same. FYI... A lot of you were sneering as you read that saying that the mods they do don't improve performance and yours do. How about that clear lens, those blue bulbs, and that ///M where it doesn't belong? Anyone bought wheels they thought looked good? What color are those wheels now? Most of us cringe at the thought, but how about tires because they looked good? (don't worry Duane, I won't mention your name) I've seen bimmers with all the requisite add ons being driven to BMW events and enjoyed right along with the performance modded ones. On the subject of performance, some of the mods these "alternately interested" guys (and gals) are putting on their cars really are for performance. They've got headers and stiff bushings, sturdier springs, monstrous sway bars, wider tires, etc. They just happen to be willing to pay for gaudy versions of those parts whereever possible. I enjoy watching them bounce along in these creations and I get a good laugh out of some of them, but I've seen some very nicely done ones too. Yeah, I know "but Geeeze, they're driving crazy on the roads and endangering the paint job on _my_ car". Like none of us ever drives crazy. If I could slap every bimmer driving moron I've ever seen who thought he was "driving hard" when in fact all he was doing was being stupid and dangerous I'd have to carry a special glove or my hand would wear out.
