Screw the weights, just set it to these specs:

Front toe: zero - 1/16" in, total (0.00 - 0.12 degree)

Rear camber: 0.8 - 1.0 degree negative, per side
Rear toe: 1/16" - 1/8" in, total (0.12 - 0.24 degree)

You know, I sub*scribe to several different mailing lists. Everytime this
topic comes up the same discussion ensues. I've been deleting all of these
to this point but I am curious now. Has anyone Asian objected to the term?
The term is directed to the car - the driver is insignificant. If I fix
up my German car you can go ahead and call me a "BratwurstBoy" , I don't
mind.

My issue with Sport Utes is that 1: The height of the bumper is about the
same or a little lower then the door handle on my M3. If I ever get
broadsided by one I am a gonner. 2. On the freeway, I cannot see past one.
3: In Southern California, perhaps about 5% of Excursion owners actually
have any real use for them other then to make some sort of fashion
statement. 4. The majority of people who purchase sport utility vehicles in
lieu of a less fashionable way to tote the kids around, seem to be under the
odd illusion that they are driving a normal car and therefore drive in the
fast lane on the freeway, cut lanes, don't seem to notice the HUGE blind
side they have and change lanes directly into me on a daily basis etc. And,
as I have witnessed on numerous occasions in recent times, then flip their
huge truck - typically killing themselves, their kids or people around them.
5. My experience has been that people who drive pickup trucks, own them for
a reason and seem to understand it is a truck and not a normal vehicle and
drive accordingly. I'd rather have a parade of plumbers and contruction
workers surounding me on the freeway in their Dualies then a single So Ca
fashion geek cruising down the road in his 'Scursion.....

According to MotorTrend Magazine the Ford Excursion Weighs in at 7,150lbs or
3.5tons (where as even the BIG new 2000 'Burban weighs 5,100lbs). It stops
from 60-0 172 feet. It is 228 inches long, 78.3 inches wide and 80.8 inches
tall. Lateral Acceleration and 600ft Slalom speeds or "N/A" (gee.... I
wonder why that is. Perhaps MotorTrend editors aren't willing to risk their
lives to get a couple of numbers?).

Now, let's compare these numbers to what I would consider a big ass heavy
passenger car: a 540i Wagen.

Also according to Motortrend magazine, the BMW 540i Wagen weighs in at
4056lbs, and stops from 60-0 in 118 feet. Yeah folks, that is 55 feet less
than Mr. Excursion.... What does this translate to? The person who just
traded in their Toyota Camry for that cool new Excursion and doesn't
understand these basic concepts in their 19 foot long, 3.5 ton Excursion
just drove completely through your car when panic braking at a sudden stop
behind you (as they still tailgate you on the freeway just like they did in
the Camry - what's the difference right?). Therefore, they probably just
killed you and your passengers.

Jon - still hate utes and still say they are deadly. At a very minimum a
different class license should be required to drive them.

Mudflaps may be unsightly to some, but they do a damn good job of keeping
saltbergs off the side of a Bimmer conscripted into winter duty. They're
part of my winter rigging, along with steel wheels, snow tires and BMW rubber
front floor mats. I take 'em off in the summer, of course, or they'd scrape
the track in corners.

Exactly. A car person is a car person. I'm happy to see automotive
enthusiasts of any ilk, especially younger people. Most can't even check oil,
let alone pick up a wrench. And, not to burst your bubble, but some of those
tuned eastern imports are a hell of a lot of fun. There's a nice article in
this month's Car and Driver regarding tuned four-cylinder cars. Even our own
T.C. Kline is getting into them.

FWD simply isn't my thing. But that engine in the Acura Integra Type R --
man. I wish BMWs M44 could have even shined it's shoes.

Just signed up to BMW's "Owner's Circle" on their web site. It is a little
buggy and not very functional at the moment but a cool concept none the
less. In the future it appears they will provide access to your BMW
Financial Services account, check your pay-off, payment history, schedule
direct/automated payments etc etc.

The only cool thing on there at the moment is a fully detailed description
of the BMW Driving Schools which after reading the description looks a bit
too sparse for a person like myself to make the trek from Ca to South
Carolina..... But for those of you who happen to live near there, there is
a one day "M School" where you drive M3s and M Coupes..... With the
exception of the M5 school, the rest of them are in 3 series sedans and X5s
on an autocross course and again only one day. Save the dough and go to
Ultimate Driving Experience events for free... They sound about the same.

Don't knock this car/truck until you drive it. Your opinion may be influenced
by a touch of reality.

Those of us that went to the UDE in the Meadowlands, walked away with a
respect for that big ole SAV. It's no M3, but it certainly is not your usual
SUV. We had a blast tossing it around their little track. Only wish we could
have had a litle more seat time.

If you have a need or the desire for one of these hugh things (and I don't),
the X5 would be the way to go. As you can see by my sig, I prefer a sports
wagon. The 528it drives like the sedan and has plenty of room for all things
that I need to carry.

Does everything else work?...probably not right? check the central locking
control unit. It is located in the driver side footwell...you must remove the
footwell speaker to get to it...be patient it will slide out once a couple
screws are removed. Check all connections at the accuators in the doors,
trunk and gas cap...if the system is "hot" you will hear them "click". Word
to the wise....on my son's '86 325es his locking went south...and we bought a
new control module ($80 something..wow!)...we put the old one back in after a
couple years and "it worked" better...electronic parts are very expensive and
you can't return them...don't buy any unless necessary! Oh, check the fuse
too <g>.

<<The little tab which goes on one side of the rear defrost grid has

wintertime is bad news. I've tried wedging it back in between the

permanent) suggestions?>>

I can't help much on this one....if your car defroster worked before the tab
broke consider yourself lucky....either solder the piece back on or replace
window I'd guess.

<<Are all OBCs created equal? The writing on my OBC buttons has become
obscenely ugly, and I'd like to replace the unit. Would any 80s-era
BMW OBC fit/plug in properly (of course I'd swap the coding plugs)?>>

Definitely not! You must have the same code on the back side...if it's
different nothing will be set for your car's engine, etc.get the VIN of your
car and check around with some of the used parts guys or post to the message
boards...I did that last summer...bought a OBC from James Clay...he was
excellent to deal with..the first one didn't work, so he quickly found a
second one for me...very honest. You don't want to buy a new one (although
maybe you will)..if memory serves they run $125+....you can find a used one
for an E30 for about $35-50.

<<Has anyone done a dashboard swap on an E30? It seems a little sad to
have a severely cracked dash in such a pretty car... Any
tips/hints/warnings? (Other than Neil Deshpande warning me not to do
it! :-) )>>

Put a dash cover on it...BMP Design or Bavarian Autosport (can't remember
which) sells them...well worth the money!!! and much easier than removing the
dash!!! There may be other covers available as well...check them all out
first before replacing the dash.

<<Any hints for removing all of the dust (???) from the inside? It's
paint-job related, and a kind of beige colored chalky substance. It's
all over every little crack & I can see it driving me nuts really
quickly...>>

Use alot of elbow grease<g>...vacuum first...use the attachment with the
brush and the snorkle(for cracks and crevices)...I use Vinylex on the plastic
and vinyl...don't use
Armoral!!!..be careful what you spray on all clear plastic surfaces...Windex
is generally safe but some other cleaners should be condemned to h*ll for
what they do to plexiglass!!! Simple green is generally safe for general
purpose cleaning as well.

<<One last q: The bottom corners of my instrument cluster plastic cover
have turned opaque. It's not obscuring any of the instruments, but it
is a bit unsightly. Suggestions?>>

There are plexiglass polishes out there that will help clean stuff like this
up, but this is a common problem..it happens with age...maybe nothing you can
do but replace the cluster...they are cheap used.

I hope this has helped...good luck..enjoy the new paint job,

Didn't knock the X5 in any way. Kudos to BMW for building a Sport Ute which
is safe for the road. This is a rare thing... Of the ones I have driven
the Land Rovers (what do ya know - BMW owned) are the only ones I feel safe
in. I presume I will come away with the same feeling after driving one at
the Ultimate Driving Experience on March 11.

I agree with Jim here. A lot of you were sneering as you read that saying
that the mods they do don't improve performance and yours do. How about
that clear lens, those blue bulbs, and that ///M where it doesn't belong?
Anyone bought wheels they thought looked good? What color are those wheels
now? Most of us cringe at the thought, but how about tires because they
looked good? (don't worry Duane, I won't mention your name) I've seen
bimmers with all the requisite add ons being driven to BMW events and
enjoyed right along with the performance modded ones.

On the subject of performance, some of the mods these "alternately
interested" guys (and gals) are putting on their cars really are for
performance. They've got headers and stiff bushings, sturdier springs,
monstrous sway bars, wider tires, etc. They just happen to be willing to
pay for gaudy versions of those parts whereever possible. I enjoy watching
them bounce along in these creations and I get a good laugh out of some of
them, but I've seen some very nicely done ones too.

Yeah, I know "but Geeeze, they're driving crazy on the roads and endangering
the paint job on _my_ car". Like none of us ever drives crazy. If I could
slap every bimmer driving moron I've ever seen who thought he was "driving
hard" when in fact all he was doing was being stupid and dangerous I'd have
to carry a special glove or my hand would wear out.

Lighten up, enjoy the show, and for a real laugh, make friends with some and
try to get them out to the autocross. Don't be surprised if they're very
interested in _your_ ride.

Probably scewed up connector at A pillar/door (behind the rubber boot..
pull it off and unplug
the connector and check the condition of the pins)

Could also be a whole bunch of stuff (dead lock motors, messed up lock
computer etc)

Check my faq

It's going to be iffy, but may be saved.

I have a file saved with a bunch of info on OBC stuff including a table

I believe that *yes* pretty much any 80s era OBC will work but don't
know for sure.
