I just bought (stole) an 89 325is, can I use a BMW alarm # 82 11 1 467 028,
I realise that there is no prewiring in this car, but is it possible to
perhaps get a harness out of a later wreck, and I am sure that someone has
figured out the pin/color codes, and hook it up? Thanks Daniel, BMW CCA

Ruh-Roh! Might be a pretty small club! Other than Dwight Derr (and Jim
Moran until he moved to Boston), I can't remember when any other 6er showed
up from NCC on a regular basis to autocross and go to the track. Might
outta solict at the Concours at Woodlawn this Spring. Most the semi-active
6'ers show up for that to polish the cars...

And the NCC in the past will not support specific model events that exclude
other bimwads driving the other series models, so that autocross might have
to run with stopwatches and flags.

Subject: [uuc] <ADMIN> CORRECT POSTING ADDRESS

The CORRECT address for posting to the UUC Digest is:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

For some reason, some people think that
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is the one to use. Why they think
that, I have no idea - the only time that address is ever listed in
any Digest instructions is that it's teh OWNER's address. That
address sends to post to just one list member, namely ME. So it's not
the correct address. I've told many people this instead of just
deleting their e-mails... but I'm not going to any more, I just don't
have the time. So if you don't notice your post ever showing up, this
just might be the reason.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> more central locking...

Okay, I got in there today and dug around a bit. What I found
thoroughly confused me...

Starting on the driver's side:

Mechanically, the linkage works great. There was a microswitch mounted
near the lock cylinder, but it the lock cylinder never actually touched
the microswitch. I've been under the impression that my E30 (early '85
build) didn't have double-locking. However, tripping this microswitch
manually definitely double-locked the passenger side door. The lock
cylinder will not rotate 90 degrees though... (FWIW, I had that lock
cylinder replaced about six months ago by a dealer -- did I get screwed
with an old lock cylinder?) Nothing I did apart from tripping the
microswitch could get the doors to power lock/unlock.

Going over to the passenger's side:

The linkage is a bit stiff. I may need to replace the lock cylinder.
There's a microswitch there, too. It's supposed to be for unlock, but
I believe that it only actuated when I turned the key towards the
"lock" side. I'll double-check this... Like the driver's side,
nothing I did could get the doors to power lock/unlock.

Moving to the trunk:

The only way I could get the passenger's side un-deadbolted was to
unlock through the trunk (w/ the driver's side microswitch
deactivated). Using the trunk lock, I was able to get both the
driver's and passenger's side motors to unlock. They would also try to
lock, but they'd reverse to unlock (like they would if the door wasn't
closed completely). When this happened, the trunk lock would also try
to cycle back to "unlocked".

As I said, I'm thoroughly confused at this point. The Central Locking
Control Unit should have power, as it's doing something when I actuate
the trunk locks, right? (I haven't tested the pins in the A-pillar,
though I did a visual inspection and they looked pretty good.) Could
both my lock motors be dead? Or the CLCU on its way out? And what's
going on with my double-locking system?

Thanks to all who pointed me to the central locking FAQ, and TIA for
all your help with this baffling problem!

It is a fat, bandwidth-intensive site with a lot of semi-successful
Javascript gadgetry, which does sometimes screw up if all the objects on
the page don't immediately load.

It works okay for me most of the time, but I can see why some would have
problems.

Check to see if the belt hasn't flipped over at the very end. At O'fest
'99, I zip tied the belts to stay unreeled for the gymkhana (oh oh, secret's
out) and somehow one got flipped during retraction. It would only retract
about 3/4 and hang, like a window shade that needs to be wound up more. I
finally pulled it all the way out and realized that it got flipped. Unflip
and it's fine.

The site was much better last year. I could always fine what I was looking
for. You could register for the UDE and at least you could find the phone
number for it. If there was a phone number this year, I couldn't find it. I
do have it now though.

I think new webmeister should be killed. Their site plainly sucks!
It reminds me of someone with their first word processor who has to use
every font and style. As John says, lots of semi-sucessuful Javascript
gadgetry. It also helps to have at least a 17" monitor. No, not everyone
has 17"

Subject: [uuc] My ///M is back

After 31 days and $4500 I got my baby back. If you all can remember, I
own a 1995 ///M3 with an ERT Super Charger. I was having a bad
overheating problem. As most of you told me, it was the head gasket (not

a warped head, thank God). From the looks of things the supercharger did

not blow the gasket. The gasket looked as if it was deteriorating from
the outside in. My mechanic suspects a bad head gasket from the factory.

While the head was off, I had a shop clean it up a bit and smooth out
the ports (very mild work nothing crazy, not much if any metal came
off), especially on the exhaust side. I also installed RTE head studs.
Last but not least we installed a Schrick 265 intake 256 exhaust cams.
For insurance we replaced the retainers and valve springs. We also put
in the new Bosch 4 plugs (I think that is what they are called.) and a
new thermostat.

The car was at ERT all day today. We "degreed" the new cams, installed
an underdrive pulley, and spent a few hours on
the dyno burning a custom chip. Before the new cams the car was making
289.4 BHP and 242.5 ft/lbs of torque. I was hoping to
get around 315 HP. Man was I surprised when Chuck came over and showed
my a final run of 333.3 HP and 282.2 Ft/Lbs of
torque. That's 400 + HP at the crank. I am the happiest man alive. The
dyno also shows that there is more HP to be had. The HP curve goes flat
at 6000
rpm. The car is running out of fuel in the top end. With bigger 30 Lb
injectors (I have 24 lb) we should get 350 HP at the wheels. Man, am I
happy.

I will post the Dyno run as soon as I can get a scan of it.

Well now I need to get some bigger injectors. Can I run 9 psi in the car

without an intercooler? Will the car handle 9 psi without an
intercooler? Will the Powerdyne fail at 9 psi? Has anyone run 9 psi on
the list? How long will the Powerdyne last at this boost level? Will
the car detonate like crazy at 9 psi without an intercooler?

True, and you be dead even faster if a garbage truck or 18 wheeler slams

A small number of Jeep GC and Land Rover owners may buy them as a

buy a 3.5 tom monster wagon like the Excursion just to use as a
fashionable commuter car. The majority of people I know with SUVs
actually use them for something. I didn't buy my first 4x4 (a beat up
Toyota pickup) as a fashion statement 15 years ago, I got it since my
black 323i couldn't drive on rutted dirt roads or across sand on surf
trips to Mexico. The rusty Toyota also attracted a lot less attention
from the Mexican Police. Today I have a Range Rover since a car is not
always the best vehicle to be driving. The Range Rover is great in the
rain (full time 4wd with auto locking center diff), hauls a lot of stuff
(5 full size garbage cans or 4 mountain bikes with the seats down) is
better than any BMW (even and ix) in the snow, and it can get me down
almost any poorly maintained dirt road.

Just wanted to send out a big thanks to the guys (and gals?) of Euromeccanica for
playing host to today's annual NY chapter get-together. In addition to the great tech
sessions (and free food!!) I was glad to catch up with a few familiar enthusiasts
(Rob, Tom, Jim and Josh) as well as finally put some faces to recognized names
(Chester, Ben). Another big thanks goes out to Jim C., who just minutes before his
tech talk took the time to personally inspect my car at the mere thought that I was
having any difficulty with one of his products.

If you are in the lower Westchester area, don't even hesitate about having work done
at Euromeccanica's clean and knowledgeably staffed location. Not everybody has a work
bench so clean you can eat off it ! <g> I gotta admit, walking in, it was a hoot to
see how many cars I recognized in the parking lot just from reading the posts of
fellow UUCers. This was really a great morning/afternoon for me, even more so because
I got to spend it with my father; although this was the first BMW-related activity he
has attended, I suspect that the comradery he experienced may be enough to drag him to
an auto-x or two... Again, thanks to Euromeccanica and everyone who turned out to make
this NY Chapter event a success!

It's February. It's cold. It's icy. All of us in the Washington DC are
are suffering from a lack of competitive car events. There' nuthin' to do
except go freeze yer tush off in the garage changing brake fluid, etc.
Yuck.

We need to drink beer. We need to race cars. We need to have a meeting of
the clan to bullshit one another for a few hours about: a.) How much uglier
n' fatter the udder guy has become since the holidays, b.) How fast our cars
have become over the winter, and c.) How we're gonna kick each others arse
in a few linked video games!

Last year we did Dave and Busters in Rockville on a weekend night. BIG
MISTAKE. Too many teenagers, too crowded for the machines. For this year,
I propose we go on a weeknight, in fact I even have a date in mind......
Wednesday, Feb. 16th beginning at 7:00 p.m. Bring lots of money to charge
up the Power Cards, and remember that Matt Yip and I are tough to beat on
the linked killer tank game. Gary (G.T.) Lin rules the off-road games, and
I absolutely LOVE watching Rich Beebe race SEGA Rally just as intense as he
does his ITS car at Summit.

We had a ball last year for the Mid-Winter Blah-Fest...why not do it again?

So gang...who's up for it? Send me an e-mail and I'll get a
count....WED....Feb. 16th....evening. Dave and Buster's, White Flint Mall,

Oh jeeez, not _another_ car event. Dang we just had a tech session at PTG
listening to how they hope to be competitive with the P-cars this year after
some development time. We sat in their cars again (that McLaren is gonna
wear out from all the folks climbing in and out under and over, opening the
engine cover closing it, messing with the doors...). Then some of us went
and hung out with fellow racer Rob Hines and some friends at his house
swapping lies... All this was right on top of the big ITS party with all
the friendly local SCCA ITS racers showing each other videos from in car and
playing whatever that driving game was projected onto a huge wall.

Then there's all that fun blasting around in big-assed 4x4s blasting through
walls of snow just because we can. We keep telling ourselves it's to make
it melt faster, but that's really not it. That dang old Suburban seems to
do a better job at it than my fancy new F250 too. I gotta get some for sale
signs on it while the season is still fun.

...what started this... Oh yeah! Another car night at Dave & Busters? Why
not, I guess I can struggle through some more car things if I'm not busy
working on my race car. Unless it's a warm night or a night after a warm
day (even with heaters in the garage you gotta take advantage of Ma Nature's
heat) you can count me in.

(Oh yeah, the tank game wasn't there the last time a group of Bubbas got
together there.)
