Yup, I was only able to stay for a little bit. It was funny how Matt greeted
me as I pulled into the driveway and sez, "You must be Chester Wong?" It
wasn't as if I own a techno violet M3...ya know!??!?! =)

The ever elusive meeting with Jim El Nabli has yet to materialize! So
close...yet so far! =) Sorry I couldn't stay, but I didn't want to enter
"techie geek" mode and bore the living daylights out of my girlfriend. So we
left and caught a movie, "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Very strange movie if you
haven't seen it...

Anyway, it was great meeting a few new people. Matt, sorry I couldn't chat a
little longer. Turns out Josh has the same Zero Halliburton I have ;)

I also spotted Ben as soon as I walked in. I walked on over, shook his hand,
and there was Rob right next to him gesturing, "Hello? What am I? Chop
liver?" My apologies Rob...your height places you in a different part of the
statosphere and although Ben is taller than me, I didn't even see you until I
took a few steps back and saw this dude staring at me ;) I have to see Rob in
a Miata one day!

On that topic, Rob commented on my krazy glue story.....and sez that I should
relay the other stories. Wanna hear them? Only one other person othen than
Rob has requested to hear the goofy story.....

Dunno if I'm right or not, but it might also be an IE vs. Netscape issue.
Seems that sometimes when I can't get IE to load a webpage and I try to use
Netscape Navigator, it works like a charm. I think I had that problem with BMW
NA's site and simply loaded it up on Netscape.

The funny thing was when I wanted to download an upgrade to IE using an IE
browser. Maybe it was something funky with my client's firewall, but I was
only able to do the download using Netscape. Talk about irony!

Subject: [uuc] Automatic virgin/head gasket

First I would like to express many thanks to all the helpful people
on this list. I got lots of advice buying my 5er, and head gasket
replacement. There's our Barvarian Auto Club meeting this Tuesday,
and I'll see how many friends and club members I can rope in for the
job. However, I don't have alot of money, so I'll just have to pick
and choose what I do to my car right now. As it is, I'm gonna spend
close to $200 restoring the paint finish. I mean it's in okay
condition, but okay's just not good enough...

I am also an automatic virgin. Other than driving rental cars with
automatic transmissions, I've always had the good fortune of driving
manual cars. So I have a couple of questions to ask ->
1) If I want to start off much faster than usual, is it okay to shift
it to 1 (first gear), 2, and then D?
2) Is it okay to redline it this way?
3) Regarding downshifting, I know I just have to stomp on the gas to
get it to downshift. However, can I just shift it from D to 2 while
in motion?
4) At redlights, I still find myself putting it in Neutral, because
it doesn't creep forward this way...
5) Are there any "performance" driving tips for an auto? There's this
one corner which I always took really fast. In my 320is, I do my
braking brfore the corner, downshift and power my way through it...

I have to remind myself that this our family car. However, all BMW's
just seem to beckon the driver to push a little further, hang on and
grin all the way. <g>

*sigh* I'm hopeless.

Could someone tell me how to remove the rear springs on an e36? Once the
rear shock is removed, the control arm should drop enough so that the
spring is easily removed, not under compression, right? It doesn't seem to.
Does the axle have to be disconnected ? Thanks.

Chris,

The short version of the sotry regarding the automatic in your 528e: Don't
mess with it!

These automatics can be a little delicate and there's always that problem
with the failed pressure-relief valve causing it to burn up. You don't even
want to put it in neutral at a stop light, this can cause the problem as
well.

Hoo boy, I'm in. Must say though I've slacked off the Sega Rally, Sega F355
Challenge is it for me now. It doesn't do linked games, but you'll love the
totally accurate simulation. Little arcade type fun fluff, but the realism
will have car nuts drooling. Fun just to watch. Plus if you're still
hanging around M-Thr. at midnight, you get 10 min. to swipe your card once
each min. for free play at any game. For F355, that means 1/2 hour of play
if you do it right. ;-D

Autoweek 2/7 reports that BMW is vacillating on the M5 Sport Wagon. Holdup
is due to making just 20 M5 engines per day for the sedan and Z8. But the
AMG E55 wagon has them thinking, and the Euro E34 M5T is a collector's item
at 500 units. On the bad side, the classifieds have six M5's, 3 asking
$88K+, and a Z8 at $189K. Yeah right. There's a 145 mph 230 hp racing Yugo
for $50K, M3LTW for $33K, or privateer M3 GT-3 for $150K. ;-)

I did this a couple of months ago. It says in the Bentley manual to remove
the axle with a torx which I didn't have so I went out and bought a set of
torx bits. You really don't have to. Even with the axle disconnected, you
need someone to stand on the axle (on the brakes) to get the arm low enough
to pull the spring out. Putting the spring in, Eibachs in my case, it just
slips right in.

Good luck,
Bobby

A small number of Jeep GC and Land Rover owners may buy them as a
fashion statement, but I have a hard time believing that anyone would
buy a 3.5 tom monster wagon like the Excursion just to use as a
fashionable commuter car. The majority of people I know with SUVs
