If an suv weighs a certain amount, then there is no Luxury Tax. a la the
range rover
no lux tax there, I think they are trying to add some more weight to make it
fit in that
category.

unless the gross vehicle weight of the X5 (not including towed stuff) can be
over 8500lbs (not very likely), it's still in the "light truck" category.

Hummers, certain Suburbans & Excursions, as well as super duty pick-ups are the
primary vehicles in this category, & the do have more lax tax rules involving
deprectiation for business & are exempt from CAFE calculations. no window
sticker with fuel economy for them as far as I know.

Lux tax is based on price, not weight and applies to all vehicles exceeding
somewhere around 32k.... it is a percentage of the amount above that
number. Therefore, if your car costs 50k, you pay a percentage of the
difference between 32 and 50. Completely idiotic....I don't know who
dreamed up that one. If there is an additional tax on SUVs based on their
weight it, it isn't the lux tax.

The luxury tax concept is right on par with the California DMV who charges
registration fees directly based on the value of your car.... to renew my
1997 328ic in 1998 it cost me $920.00....... To renew it for 1999 it was
$650.00...

Subject: [uuc] where to find Hella products?

On my trip to New Zealand recently, I noticed a lot of cars with a
Hella Matrix LED CHMSL. I'd like to get one to install on my
(CHMSL-less) E30. However, Hella NA doesn't list this as one of their
products, and Hella NZ's web site says that the Matrix CHMSL is
"designed and built in New Zealand"...

Does anyone have a clue how I could get my hands on one of these
puppies? Or are there any friendly Kiwis out there who are willing to
do some legwork for me? Thanks.

Subject: [uuc] Stone chip prevention

What is the best way to prevent stone chips on the nose of my '99 Titanium
Silver M3 on long highway trips? I understand that there is a (alomst) clear
film that can be applied to the front of the car to act as an invisible bra.
Has anyone tried this? IS isntallation a nightmare? I understand that it
shows up on a white car, but will it still show on the silver? Should I even
consider a conventinal black vinyl bra? I understand if I leave it on the
trapped moisture will cause the clearcoat to become milky and the flapping
of the bra at highway speeds can't be good for the paint I'm trying to
protect.

The other option is have the UUC guys create an aluminum block that fits
under the go pedal and then the paint should be safe. *grin*

Subject: [uuc] <E30> central locking followup

Thanks again for all who gave me suggestions on where to start with my
troublesome central locking...

I spent some quality time with my car yesterday and came to the
following point:

- - Central locking would work from the driver's side.
- - Passenger's side worked only manually.
- - Double-lockind would not work at all.
- - I put everything back together, and the driver's side stopped
working.

Playing around in there, I noticed a lot of corrosion on the A-pillar
connectors, as well as on the connectors for the locking motors. I
tried to clean them up as best I could, but apparently I didn't do it
well enough.

I've decided that, since it stopped working while the body shop had
jurisdiction over my car, I'm going to ask them nicely to pay to have
things fixed (also, I think some of the "corrosion" in the connectors
was body shop residue -- I still don't know what it is, but it's the
powdery tan stuff).

Ps. Now I'd really like to get the car dynoed with the new JimC Chip. Anyone
know of a reasonable place in the NY/NJ area? The car does seem to run
smoother with the new chip. Although I haven't really pushed it, to
see........
=================================================
There should be a Dynapack chassis dyno available locally in about 5-6
weeks. This is a 4wd machine, fully loaded with a 16 channel controller (8
thermocouples, voltage, etc), humidity and temp interface for SAE
correction, pressure and boost transducer module, MoTeC AFM1 lambda
interface and 5-gas analyzer. It will be the only machine of its kind in
the US or Europe. SD

Subject: [uuc] <ot> Attorney needed for unfair termination

No...not for me. I need an attorney for my mom in the NYC region. Basically
what it boils down to is my mother is being asked to retire from her company.
She has worked there for 20+ years under different management. So when they
offered her a "package", they wanted to short change her on her severance
pay....I think it was something rather than 2 weeks salary per year of service
for the 20+ years to 2 weeks of salary per year of service under the new
management (< 5 years).

Any referrals would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Chester

Subject: [uuc] M5 Shortage??? Hah!! <RANT>

Is this a market top or what?? I don't know how many M5's BMW intends to sell
in the US, but I would expect it to be somewhat more than 1,500 I've heard.
Some dealers (suprise, suprise) are being less than honest about supply. Look
at the numbers. For all of '99 BMW delivered 700 US M5's including 443 in
December (as per BMW-NA). In January the tally was 315. This would mean that
between February and August-September BMW will sell on average something like
55-60 cars a month. Even if sales decline by 30%/month it is still another 700
units. I, like some of you, have been waiting for these guys asking $90K+ to
get stuffed, if only because I wasn't smart enough to get on the list 15 months
ago. I heard stories of dealers getting cancellations and being able to
schedule orders sooner (on a car that's been hotter even more limited E55???
Unlikely). So I called around a couple of east coast dealers and according to
the more honest salesmen the dealers are getting extra allocations. If you
really want one, put your name on the list now and you will probably have a car
before the end of the summer. If the stock market goes in the sh*tter,
probably sooner.

Eric

P.S. If your long one and looking to sell, better hit your best bid.

You first need to know how electricity works. Without that understanding a
multimeter is useless. With that knowledge, using a multimeter is trivial.

In car diagnostics, you use it to check for the presence of voltage at
various points in a circuit or resistance to ground and shorts.

Gary is right; it will take a little education. Try getting a *used* book on
basic electronics, maybe an old text book from a technical school. It's the
easiest way. Or, check out http://www.opamp.com for any and all manner of
technical books. They sell new and used. Call if you are confused, and they
will recommend books.

I've heard that vibration can be caused by a cracked drive shaft
disc. It seems that it's made of a hard rubber, and over time it just
cracks. Under acceleration, it causes the drive shaft to vibrate.

My 2 cents,

Your local Radio Shack should have some books to look through. They will
have multimeter books and books on electronics/electricity/etc. A good
multimeter will also come with a good set of directions on these issues.
Buy a good multimeter.....I have bought cheapies and they don't last long.
The connectors break, etc. I would suggest a nice digital one with
removable test connectors. I went through a ton of the $25 dollars ones.
Just spent almost $90 on my most recent one and love it. Even has a
temperature tester to boot. Big huge LCD screen, plastic shock case around
it and stand.
