A company by the name of "Fluke" makes a good multimeter. I've had the same
one for about 6 years now without any problems.

Check if your DME (engine brain) is getting flooded. Check the drain holes
and see if they are plugged up.

Car washes, whirling things scraping the crud off the car. <shudder>

Subject: [uuc] Clicking noise under hard acceleration

Hi. I'm trying to find people who had a similar clicking noise under hard
acceleration. It's random and doesn't occur at a high frequency, but you can
kind of hear it when you floor it. It was first revealed at the dyno session,
but now I hear it while inside the car every now and then. I'll be checking
the engine and tranny mounts along with every big bolt to see if everything is
nice and tight. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas of what could be wrong.

TIA,
Chester

In a message dated 2/7/00 12:20:14 PM Central Standard Time, Alex Cagann is
concerned that his aftermarket chip still appears to have a rev limiter:

 - --- "Cagann, Alexander" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

 > chip in it.... >>

In response, Mathew Yip passes along some excellent information:

<< The Dinan chip, like the Conforti chip, has a rev-limiter BUT it is
set at 7200 rpms which is over the roughly 6900 rpm limit set by BMW.
The biggest drawback to the higher redline is that the OE harmonic
balancer is balanced to "only" 7000 rpms. For cars that are
routinely drive to the 7200 rpm redline, there have been stories of
the crank nut wallowing out the hub and thus ruining the crank. >>

Call me a wimp, but something about the image of tach needles bouncing off
*already raised* rev-limiters in $15,000 engines makes me just a bit
uncomfortable...especially since there's no extra HP hiding up there, and in
my experience spun crank hubs on the S38 engine are perhaps more common than
people think.

For about $350, you can buy a hardened crank hub from Frank Fahey Motorsports
(and I think there are Korman/Dinan equivalents as well) that will pretty
much eliminate the possibility. IMHO, this is effective insurance at a
reasonable cost that ought to be one of the first upgrades on an M5/6 motor.
I have seen M5s with hub failures that resulted in sheared keyways or the
like. If they still run, they idle at about 2,000 rpm and the cowl shakes
like a beaten dog. Not a pretty sight!

Well, that's my Downer for the Day. Now on to happier thoughts! :-)

I used the Strongard product and it worked great. You could barely see it on
my Morea Green 325ic. I know there are some new products on the market that
come pre-cut for your specific car. I think it's called Durashield. they
have a web site that can help. Don't use a bra, it will waste your paint.
Just my .02.

Don't tailgate ;) You already know about the downsides of a conventional nose
bra (plus it's ugly). Then there's the other solution that you mention--a
clear film that is applied to the front of your car. I think
http://www.stongard.com is what you're talking about. Basically, it's a 3M
film that is cut to shape and glued onto the paint. I think it costs somewhere
in the region of $300 - $500.

I haven't done anything yet (although I might do the rear valence where the
water spray from the tires hit the paint...IMO, the mudflaps are ugly), but not
tailgating and leaving a gap between you and the car in front certainly helps.
Don't know what to say about the people behind me who tailgate....my nice fat
tires picking up all sorts of nasties ;)

FWIW,
Chester

Everyone,

The first Mid-Atlantik (with a "k") '02 Fest will be held on April 29th at
the Shenandoah River State Park in Virginia (did I spell Shenandoah right
Phil?) on Route 340 just north of Bentonville (south of Front Royal). This
is a "new" State Park...don't confuse it with the Shenandoah National Park.

I have reserved the largest shelter they have...with private parking for 55
cars...more room if needed<g>. It's simply beautiful in that area...you
"Southerners" can drive up Skyline Drive which ends in Front Royal...

The "Rain Date" will be the following Saturday May 6th.

I know there's alot going on in the springtime, but I couldn't think of a
better time of year to get out the 2002's (and 1600's, etc.) and "get
together"...remember the "hot summer" of '99?

I have about 40 people on my database that have already expressed
interest...I'll be in touch....I just wanted to get the message out so you
all can plan accordingly.

See ya there!!! More Details to follow...please feel free to e-mail me for
more info.

Happy '02ing (when the snow melts!),

Subject: [uuc] Forever Black vs Pressure Wash vs ????

On my 740i, the PO got wax on the black trim. I had heard that forever black
was the way to go. I called the local dealer, and they were against it. While
I was waiting for my service advisor to sell me something that they carried he
recommended I take the car to one of those pressure wash places and clean the
wax off there (of course being very careful of the paint). Anyone else have
some suggestions???

Subject: [uuc] More Chester stories (part 1)....

Guys...I'm having such a bad day at work, I thought I'd share some
humor...might brighten my day...

'lil Chester in the department store, women, and cleavage...
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
So 'lil Chester goes shopping with his mom one day....good 'ol Kings Plaza in
Brooklyn, NY. We venture into Macy's....yeck...why couldn't we hang out in
Hermans or something?

So 'lil Chester is bored and tells his mom that he'll hang out in the
electronics department--at least I could have some fun looking at the gadgets.
Browsing around, the camcorder section caught my eye. I mosey on over to where
they had this miniature town setup in the middle and all the various different
brands of camcorders on the periphery. One particular camera was hooked up to
a bank of tvs (~ 20 of them) in the background to show you the wonderful detail
the camera is able to pick up. So 'lil Chester decides to stand behind this
camera and pretend he's a director. Pan left....pan right....very cool. But
wait...this camera is able to swivel all the way around (180 degrees) and film
the clothing department, the lights, the people walking around....kewl. So I'm
having fun and zooming in and out and panning left and right in the department
store looking at the bank of screens to see what the camera is seeing.

Along comes these two voluptuous women low cut sweaters walking by and they see
this cute little kid playing by the camcorders. "Isn't he cute...," one of the
ladies sez as she walks into the field of view of the camera I was at. "Hey,
look...we're on tv," one lady sez to her friend. At that moment, instead of
slowly zooming in using the buttons, I pushed the tab on the lens that allows
you to zoom in real quick. *BLAM*...one lady's chest was right in the center
of the shot....a huge canyon was projected on all 20+ tvs for everyone in the
immediate vicinty to see. Quickly, the woman places her hand over her chest
and screams, "Oh my Lord!!!!," and quickly runs past the camera.

Heh heh heh....
