Subject: [uuc] 3 Chip Comparison (528e)

After a few upgrades to my '87 528e ( rebuilt head, "i" cam/springs,
3.25 LSD, larger throttle body from '88 325i) I replace the stock chip
with Dinan's latest. No dyno figures, etc., but there seemed to be an
increase in upper rpm performance. No noticeable change until around 3k,
and then the power increase is apparent. After a few months, I replaced
the stock chip for comparison, and there wasn't a lot of difference.
Either stock or Dinan, I attributed the better performance to the other
upgrades. Until I went to the Conforti chip, that is! This chip unlocks
this motor, and the power comes on smoothly, all the way to the limiter
(5300 rpm). Torque is great at lower rpm, and gas mileage is fine at
22-25 in town. Better than 30 on the road, and the car will run all day
at 75-80mph while turning around 3k rpm, even in the mountains of
western Washington.
So, if you want some great bang for $, and I mean cheap, get a Conforti
chip and 3.25 LSD.I experimented with a 3.46 LSD, and it made the motor
too busy at most speeds. Went back to the 3.25. If you're inclined, an
"i" cam makes a huge difference over stock, and they are cheap, too.
Don't do this one until you're ready to pull the head for some other
reason, i.e. leaking gasket, etc. If you have an eta motor built prior
to '88, don't bother with a larger throttle body. You won't get much, if
any, improvement, using this on a stock head/valve configuration.
BUT, if you want to buy a T/B, I'll sell mine for $100, and throw in the
intake bellows!

The high motor vehicle registration rates in many states are in fact a
personal property tax on vehicles. I live in Ohio, which doesn't tax
cars as personal property, and therefore pay just $40 or so to register
any given vehicle for a year. But you've got to figure, you pay your
state taxes one way or another....

Look for a white wire (if memory serves)...that's the one that feeds the
power antenna...if your car had a fader control on the dash, that can
complicate matters...the dealer that installed the cd player probably didn't
want to fool with tracking all the wires...tell him to look at the ETM for
the E30..shows all wiring...I'd make him fix it right..you paid for it.

Subject: [uuc] <MISC> car washes

I keep seeing people say that automatic car washes are scary and
terrible and the kiss
of death.. and was just wondering why.. ?

Yes, the ones with rotating brushes or felt strips are truly scary, but
around here there
are lots of 'touchless' car washes that use robot arms that move around
the car spraying
water at a million psi which tend to remove most of the winter crap just
fine..
what's wrong with using them ?

no, they don't get the car 'so clean you can eat off it', but they do
remove most of the
salt/slush/grit/goo so that you can at least *touch* the outside of the
car without
having to use industrial solvents to wash your hands..

The only problem with car washes around here are that
a) if the weather is cold you might find every lock, door and window on
the car freezes shut
and traps you inside or out
b) if the weather is up close to the freezing point, the lines at the
car wash are *real* long

Does anyone have the diagram to figure out which pins control the functions

In CA we don't pay to register our cars. We pay a use tax ON our cars.
They just call it registration.

I'm selling my M3 track wheels to help offset my club racing expenses. They
are 17X8 with a 40 mm offset and will fit any E36. The tires are
P235/40ZR17 BFG G-Force R1's. They have only been on the car at two driving
schools and have more than 2/3 tread remaining. My asking price is $1200
plus shipping. Here is a photo of the wheels, if you can look past my "pit
crew" (sorry, it's the only picture I had.)

Subject: [uuc] Bimwad Body Shop in Indianapolis?

If you don't want to read the story, skip the question in the last
paragraph.

I was absorbed into an accident today. I was first in line for a left turn.
My light was red and I was waiting for it to change. The signal for cross
traffic is changing to red and Fred Sanford (uninsured in his Ford
former-pickup-now-stake-side-flat-bed-with-big-mud-tires) was waiting to
turn left from the cross street into my leg of the intersection. (the fred
sanford thing is not a racial remark - this was a 40 year old white guy -
but the truck and it's cargo come close)

So the light is very yellow/red - his oncoming traffic is slowing down (or
so he thinks). He turns left and get his back side smacked by a loaded
cement truck that didn't want to stop at the light. The back end of the
truck spins around and into my right front corner.

All kinds of tools and debris comes flying out of the truck all over me and
the surrounding road. Wrenches, GOOP hand cleaner (my car was splattered
with GOOP), a tire (mounted), a gas can, assorted hardware ... it was a
mess.

Anyhow, I am hopeful that the old girl isn't totaled - it wasn't a bad hit.
I think the left fender is OK, but all the rest of the front-end sheetmetal
will have to be replaced. Since I got hit by the side of the truck, I think
the bumper is OK, but the right-side lights are broken (Hellas ... sigh).

Most importantly, there were no injuries - not even minor. Considering one
of the vehicles was a 72,000 LB GW cement mixer, things could have been MUCH
MUCH worse.

- ---===> Here's the question <===---

My car was no showpiece. The front end had been long damaged before I got
it and the repair job was no prize. The paint on the front-end sheetmetal
was badly checked and stone-chipped, and poorly repaired. Assuming the car
is NOT totaled, is there a reasonable, reliable, competent body shop in
Indianapolis that I should have handle the job?

I am working with a guy in Yurrup who thinks he has a line on a ZF CLOSE
RATIO 5speed from an E30M3 . Does anyone know WHICH C/R those cars used?
The US spec cars had the Getrag 265 Overdrive ..exactly the same as the
635/535/735 did . I THINK the Euro E30 M3 used a ZF Close-ratio and a
different rear-end ratio . True?? Anyone with a parts-CD able to confirm for
me? ..How about a ZF model number?
Reason for my confusion is that the 5/6/735 series Close ratio box was also
a Getrag -a 262 -of which I have a couple needing sustenance (anybody got a
good mainshaft and input shaft?-needle brg froze on mine ). Presumably a ZF
would bolt to the same bellhousing?.
If it turns out to be the ZF C/R I may have it for sale soon...what're they
worth to club racers?.

Eric asks:

>>On my 740i, the PO got wax on the black trim. I had heard that
forever black was the way to go. Anyone else have some suggestions???<<

Someone recently recommended to me that a white eraser would do the trick. I
went to Office Depot and purchased a four-pack of Staedtler mars plastic
erasers. It removed the wax, and didn't seem to have any negative effects on
the plastic. However, I don't know about long term.

Hi folks,
I'm reinstalling my sunroof after having the car painted and I'm having a
hard time understanding the directions in my Bentley. It says to adjust the
sunroof so that it's tilted up in the rear 1mm above the roof and tilted
down in the front 1mm below the roof line. My question is: is this done
with the controls in the fully-closed position? Or do I use the controls to
get the 1mm differential with the allen wrenches in the slots? Any help is
greatly appreciated. TIA.

Subject: [uuc] <All> Fluke Meters.

Fluke meters are indeed the Snap-On of meters. HP even sells them out of its catalog
and that is saying a lot for any company.

The automotive meters, some of which I use every week, have two features that I like:

1. RPM readout with a pickup that you clip over a spark plug wire. Don't know what
you would do with a coil on plug setup.

2. Oxygen sensor tester that allows you go get both the voltage readout and the
crossings. The crossings refers to the number of times a second the voltage crosses
zero and is as important as the voltage. This is indicated by means of an analog bar
graph, which is a nice thing in a digital meter.

Subject: [uuc] <WOB> 'lil Chester stories (Part 3)

Ok, sinec Ellie MacDougall egged me on...I'll continue...

- - pubescent Chester trying to impress a girl by tubing down a hill with a
friend....that was painful and bloody..

Ah...senior year of high school (not too long ago). I was chasing this girl
for about a 7 months. She happened to be a sister of a girl that my best
friend was chasing as well...go figure. A group of us were headed to PA for a
little winter retreat. Finally, some time to spend with her without the
parents, school, or anything to get in the way. But wait, the game of "playing
hard to get" was still in effect and she didn't spend any time with me. DOH!

So one afternoon, after it snowed for a bit, my bud and I decide to do what
everyone else was doing to pass the time and to have some fun. They had the
inner tubes of 18 wheelers along a nice long slope. We hauled the tubes to the
top of the hill and slid down...woo hoo! Now, there were many more adventurous
teenagers there who went down two at a time, three at a time, even five at a
time on the same tube! How hard could it be? But oh wait...along comes girlie
and her sister.

My friend was already off to the top of the hill with his inner tube. I
decided to just follow him up....I'll just catch a ride with him down the
slope. We get to the top and my friend asks, "Do you want to be on top or
bottom." Of course, being the little perverts that we were...we chuckled. In
the end, I decided to be on the bottom and we would go lying down on the tube
like superman. We placed the tube down and I climbed aboard. My friend takes
a running start from 15 feet back, jumps, and lands on me...away we go.
SWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!!!!!!! Man....we accelerated so fast it seemed like
we were flying down the slope....maybe since my face was 4 inches away from the
ice/snow it seemed faster...yeah...maybe. Here comes a slight curve in the
path with a nice banked radius....swooooooosshhhh.... Ok...here comes the
bottom of the hill.... Little did we realize that everyone's
feet/butt/stomach/etc had carved out the bottom of a hill and made it an
instant sky ramp! SWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSHHHHHH.....I don't remember if I
screamed like a girl, but we were airborne. "HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!," we screamed
in unison. Well, my friend had separated from me slightly...but he was still
holding on to my shoulders. While we returned to Earth, he placed his weight
on my shoulders causing me to pitch forward like 'o helicopter. In slo-mo (it
always happens this way, doesn't it?) I see the ice closing in on my
face...."f*ck...this can't be good."
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
*WHAM* My chin becomes the pivot causing me to go into an abrupt
flip--ejecting my buddy into the air further ahead of me.

*WHAM* *BAM* *BIP* *SPLAT* *UMPH* *DOH* *FRIGGIN* *FRUGGIN*...ker splat....we
finally come to a rest. Thank gawd I'm still alive! I slowly stumble to get
on my feet and look for where my friend landed. Well, aparently we were
screaming like two little girls and our mouths became instant icecream
scoopers. An iceball 3 - 4 inches in diameter had formed inside my mouth and
my friend's mouth. Stupified, we both struggled to dislodge the
snowballs....our faces were so numb from the impact and the cold that as we
pulled out the ice, we drooled all over the place. Guess what? The two
girlies were standing right in front of us. Of course, I had to turn around
and fetch the pair of cool Raybans I was wearing that was lodged into the floor
about 15 feet behind us.

I touch my chin (the point of impact) and see blood. The girlie walks over and
sez, "Do you know you're bleeding?" ....but no such comforting happened and
she just walked away... "No kidding, BITCH!," I mumbled as I headed to the
room to take a rest and lick my wounds. I ended up with ice burns the back of
my hands hands, behind my ear, on my chin.....eck....
