Funny thing about the crank hub on the early M5/6 motors...

Mark at Becker Imports did some research with a customer who had an M6 and 
they found that BMW had instituted a design change in the crank hub (the new 
one being beefier) but kept the part number the same.  Supposedly the 
hardness of the metal in earlier design part was significantly low allowing 
for distortion at high rpm resulting in the crank nut coming loose.  It 
really didn't matter if you only drove the car on the street (vs track), 
people were still finding problems keeping the nut tight. In the meantime 
Fahey came out a bolt on set up to help insure the crank nut would not come 
loose, but then upgraded a bit, to now --selling only a newer design crank 
hub for ~$350.  The bolt on piece was ~$20-50, but is NLA.  The newer design 
crank hub from BMW is significantly less $$$ then aftermarket, check with 
Mark for exact prices.

Yeeeeehawwwwwww!  Ride 'em cowboy!  I know exactly what you're talking
about.  Mine has done this for the past 2 winters.  Last year I checked the
codes it said I had a bad coolant temp sensor.  No big deal, I replaced that
and it was fine.  This year it starts this again!  Getting no codes I decide
that the ICV has finally worn out and I replace it.  So far so good.  Check
the codes, if nothing comes back try cleaning your ICV.  If it helps you
will need a new one soon.  Lemme know if you have more questions.

Everyone, 

My dad is *considering* (and I am supporting this because maybe, just
maybe, someday I'll get to drive it!!  <Grin>....)   buying a new or
lightly used Z3 5-speed....something he can keep for years and years,
summer only miles (2-3000/yr) in Michigan.  

I think that the new 2.3 Z3 sounds pretty good, MSRP about $35k with some
options on it, with more gusto than the 1.9 4 banger had, seeing as we
really dont need the bigger six......or should I have him look at used
ones?  Really dont want someone else's problem vehicle (or something that
someone leased and beat the &^*&^ out of because they didnt own it and
didnt care)....

Any suggestions are appreciated, it will definitely be a 5 speed, either
bright red or jet black with camel interior...........havent driven one as
it is snowing out still!

We love our 89 iX though......and that has 125k on it!

Time for a follow-up.

Those that have been UUC Digest subscribers for awhile may remember the
group purchase Mssr. Collie organized on the nifty Snap-On 12V cordless 3/4"
driver.  Y'all may also remember that he made a gift to me of one of these
neat toys using funds raised from selling UUC Digest stickers.  I described
it as a really col tool whose case made me feel very Fox Mulder-ish in its
CIA seriousness.

I *finally* got my first chance to use it last night!

The story is very long and doesn't involve a BMW, but does involve
aftermarket wheels that needed to have their hub adapters pressed in by
torquing the lug nuts down and effectively pressing the wheel over the
adapter.  I was pissed at the difficulty of this, and I won't pretend the
Snap-On was able to deliver the sufficient torque for that part of the job.

What I did use it for was the final "road ready" torque application.  The
Snap-On let me nail the nuts down tight but still assure me that if I might
get a flat I would still be able to get the nuts off with the standard
hand-powered lug wrech without seperating my shoulder (as I did one, not
very pleasant).

So between the Snap-On electric driver, my Lincoln floor jack, and the piles
of extra wheels and whatnot in my garage, jeez... it looks like I actually
work on my cars every now and then!

(Repeat to self:  righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.  Got it.)

Aaron, it is probably not the lighter wheels that made the ride rougher and
noisier as much as it is the increased wheel width.  You've stretched the
sidewalls out a half inch more, which makes them stiffer.  There is less
sidewall flex, which until now was an integral part of the car's ride
quality.  You might be able to run slightly lower tire pressures to
compensate, but watch your tire wear.  Also, less air will affect handling.
Aren't these trade-offs fun?

One other thing you might notice with lighter wheels:  The tires stay in
contact with the road better.  There is less unsprung weight, so the
springs have an easier time keeping the tire from bouncing up.

It is interesting that you stuck with 13 inch wheels, instead of upgrading
to 14 inch.  A 195/60-14 would have made a nice tire size upgrade.  I don't
think I've ever seen a 195/65-13.

You know that little dot thingie near your 160mph readout? Well, we all know 
it's not a LED telling you you're hitting the top speed limiter yet we're 
told it's a phototransisiter. Here's how to see if it works:
This test is recommended to be done in a dark area or inside your garage. 
Turn to KL-15, which is ignition switch postion #2 and put on the parking 
lights. Get out your mini-flashlight in your glovebox. Then press any button 
on your OBC or multi-function clock. Set dimmer switch to low and aim the 
light to the phototransistor and watch the display matrix glow brighter!

 Um, that's the sensor I was referring to, in case I didn't state that
clearly.  (there's 2 identical sensors back there - 1 senses a pin in
the flywheel for starting, the other senses the teeth on the flywheel
for motor speed input)
 Other years & models have different sensor arrangements though.

Unfortunately, from what I have experienced with my Boss's car - a 99 M3
Convertable - There is no way to get rid of this noise out side of removing
the top all together.  There was absolutely nothing that the BMW dealers
could do as well...  He had Complained to BMWNA and they set him up with
their top guy & he could do nothing to stop the 'klunks'....  It has been
stated that it is of poor design.   He returned the hardtop all together...

    I had a slight disagreement today with one of my buddies who drives a 
Cobra and is very into American cars.  We usually have disagreements on a 
daily basis, based on the performance of German engineered cars compared to 
American Muscle cars.  The discussion started off with how an M5 would not 
particularly beat a Viper at the drag strip, but it would destroy the Viper 
on the track.  I brought up the fact that the M5 with the Michelin Pilots 
Sports pulls 1.2 g's.  I remember reading this somewhere and it stuck to my 
mind.  He laughed and me and said it is a four door sedan.  I replied that it 
is a four door sedan that would blow the doors off a Viper.  I tried to back 
myself up with how even 6 cylinder M3's beat Vipers at the track as shown on 
Speedvision races, which just blows my mind.  Anyone have any leads to 
columns written or articles about this topic, especially the 1.2 g's the M5 
pulls?  Thanks a lot!
