Ray, Im just too excited. they told me, that the digital motor to my 318i
was damaged. Imagine that, I really feel someone is liable, but I need
transportation, and won't continue to drive a damaged car even after fixed.
I think a newer model would go well. I was offered 6,000 for mine, but I
won't be buying a car from the people I took mine to, because I got a much
better deal elsewhere, one I can't refuse:) Also, they said that my water
pump was leaking, and I needed drive belts to another extra $340, and the
digital motor 1,400. I think I now need to get into something with warranty.

Don't write-off those crude American cars altogether - look at the
cars that placed 1,2,3 at the 24 hours of Daytona. Namely Viper,
Corvette, Viper if I recall properly. I didn't watch much of the
race (forgot) - where any BMWs entered and if so, how did they
finish?

Engineering to perfection has its drawbacks as well. As a 2002 owner
and they'll most likely lament the fact that they can't fix a new car
on the side of the road. Gone are the days of simple DIY tune-ups,
etc. While most of the basics can still be performed with a few
wrenches and screwdrivers, the many repairs today require either a
$100K computer for diagnosis OR a component replacement which may or
may not have positive results.

for the opinion of someone who should really know what these cars are like in
comparison, surf over to the message board at the unofficial M5 home page.

MB at : http://www.insidetheweb.com/mbs.cgi/mb165896
page at : http://www.bmwm5.com/

John Hennessey of Viper tuning fame has an E39 M5 and posted that once in gear
(can't recall exact speeds) there was very little difference between the M5 &
the Viper. search the archives within the last month or so.

He is working on a new exhaust for the M5 & maybe some other tuning items. He
seems very down to earth about things & loves the M5.

IMHO the Viper is indeed an impressive piece of work, but is too big & heavy to
be useable for regular day-to-day use & has a image that I'm not particularily
fond of. I imagine that as an out of the box track toy it's pretty damn fun,
bad brakes excepted.

I didn't get to choose all the features on my truck; bought it off the lot.
Your 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 Sport Cummins Turbo Diesel Quad Cab Long Bed 4x4
Dually came with too many back tires and not enough cylinders for me though.

OBMWC - we both use these trucks to tow our 325is ITS racers to the track

Hi there
I am looking for some E-36/M3 parts that I'm sure some of you will have
taking up space in your garage:
A set of camshafts and a set of rear brake calipers
I also need a set of front brake calipers for the 325.
Please e-mail to work out the details

Subject: Re: [uuc] Basic physics question

I'm not an expert in vehicle dynamics, but I'll take a shot at it. The suspension
system of a car includes the springs, shocks, wheels, and tires, which all have to
work in unison to optimize the ride.
What you've done is change one element in the suspension system without considering
the others. Hence the rougher ride. In your case I bet the reason the ride feels
harsher with the new allow wheels is
that more force is tranmitted to the car's frame through the shock absorbers than
before.

Here's my guess as to why. The less massive wheels provide less inertia to oppose
forces from bumps, potholes etc. These bumps can be modeled as imparting very brief
jolts to the wheel, as trasmitted
to the wheel through the side wall of the tire. Remember the formula f delta t = m
delta v from physics? Here f is the force imparted on the wheel for a time delta t, m
is the mass of the wheel, and
delta v is the resulting initial upward velocity of the wheel as it moves over the
bump in the road. For a given bump the f delta t is the same for both the light wheel
and heavy wheel, but the
resulting delta v for the lighter wheel is greater than for the heavy wheel. Hence
there's a greater inituial upward velocity, and the shock absorber transmits a larger
force to the frame of the car -
since this force is proportional to v - and you experience a rougher ride.

Another way to look at this is to consider the energy that gets stored in the spring
when it's compressed. The value of this potential ebnergy is equal to 1/2*k*x^2,
where k is the spring constant and x
is the amount of deflection of the spring. This potential energy is converted to
kinetic energy in the form of the up-and-down movement of the wheel as it bounces at
the end of the spring. This
kinetic energy reaches a maximum of 1/2*m*v^2 at the point where x = 0 (i.e., where
the spring is neither extended nor compressed). The lighter the wheel, the greater
the value of v, and the more force
that again is tranmitted to the car through the shock absorber.

Bottom line - if the springs and shocks were better matched to the lighter alloy
wheels, I bet the ride would be smoother.

I know exactly what you mean. When I was a young pup, I worked at
gas station bringing in a wopping $2/hr. Anyways, the owner (note
gas station, not service station) was attempting to change the
tires on an old Dart, I believe. Well, since he wasn't a mechanical
wizard and I was too young to know better...you guessed it, he busted
two studs off before he finally realized they where left handed threads.

Next time I knew better, I don't think he ever learned.

Hmmm... better than any man... you could make a good argument for that:

Benefits of a BMW over a man:
1) reliable every morning.
2) good trade-in value when you're done with it.
3) you're rarely embarassed to be seen with it.
4) doesn't mind if you like other BMWs also.
5) gaseous emissions always under strict control.
6) just because your friend drives it once doesn't mean you have to get rid
of it.
7) you can lather it all up and wash it without it expecting "more".
8) parents will approve.
9) no such thing as a "receding paintline".
10) YOU choose the commitment - 3 years with an option to renew.

Subject: [uuc] M5 vs snakes

Here in Indiana the BMW Club puts on a Dodge Viper driver's school every
year for the Midwest Viper Council, so as an instructor I have extensive
seat time in them. (This event was coined 'Snakes in the Grass' due to the
40-50 spins a weekend that invariably occur. A BMW school normally has 4-5
spins.)I've owned almost a dozen M5s. Put any normal driver, including 99%
of the people on this list in both cars, and the M5 will STOMP a Viper. On
the track, on the street, in an autocross. Viper brakes ( and I use the term
lightly) SUCK. They are hard to modulate, won't unlock unless you get WAY
out of the pedal, and fade to oblivion in a hurry. 335 series tires stick
really well WHEN ACTUALLY TOUCHING the pavement, but thats not all that
often. Are they fun to drive? ARE YOU KIDDING?! They are an absolute,
E-Ticket Grade A blast to drive. 500 ft lbs will change your attitude on
life. But go to any driver's school with a Viper, even a GTS, in it and
watch their lap times. A well driven E36 325 will run similar times. Vipers
are great street cars for those who are, um, physically challenged and don't
appreciate build quality. But for the money, they offer the best street
performance bang for the buck on the market. Are they good track cars? At
70% they are fantastic fun. At 95% they are awful. How much time are you
going to spend on the track? How much time will you spend on the street? It
all depends on what you want the car to do. I have a family, business
commitments, snow to deal with, and car-pool duty. I need a real car, not a
toy. But if you have the money for a toy, they're an awfully good time. Take
any stock Viper, and any M5, and see who runs more laps in a half-hour
session. Then give the Viper guy the
"Racing Excuses" T-Shirt available at Racer Wholesale... ;)
