Jonathan, this holds true for just about any car which can be considered
"sporty". I've competed in the Ferrari/Viper War TT event for 4 years
now, and fortunately, the type you've described don't show up. Then
again, that's true for the owner's of other marques, too. (I do lots
events with lots of clubs.) Nothing like the poseurs with the fast cars
who are clueless as to the cars performance or how to extract it. We
all know and see these people.

When I'm king, the weenieless shall be given the appropriate sh*tbox to
drive. Enthusiasts will be granted the real toys! ;)

Actually that was from the "Gumball Rally" - a classic car movie if
there ever was one. Nothing like the Cobra and the Daytona racing
flat-out. BMW ///M engines may sound pretty BUT nothing beats the
sounds of a Ford 427 side-oiler or a Ferrari V12.

I met a guy while at Moroso a couple weeks ago driving his M5 around the
track, he said "there is no comparison the viper is faster, but the M5 is
effortlessly easy to drive at very high speed. The car is to good" On the
other hand I know someone who has an M5 and said he raced a viper and blew it
away. I think the first gentelman is a little more credible than the second.

Sorry Milo, the M5 will be eaten alive by the Viper. I've done enough
track events with enough clubs to know that the fastest, stock, car at
the track is the Viper. This assumes equal driver skill, of course.

As for Speedvision Cup, there are lots of rules which balance out the
competition. Often times it depends on the particular track as to who
has an advantage. Even at the Daytona 24 this year, the Viper got stuck
with an intake restrictor on their stock based motor. The Corvettes
were able to run 7 liter special race motors and still got waxed in the
end. However their qualifying spot was most impressive. Think I can go
to my Chevy dealer and get one of 'em?

Yes, the build quality and reliability of the Viper is not the greatest
(but much improving. Remember this car wasn't in real production until
7 years ago), but for the price of entry, there is plenty left over for
maintenance.

As for the 1.2g M5, I gotta see that to believe it. Are they equipping
them with Hoosiers or what?

Sure you can buy that 7L Vette. It's right next to that RWD, V8
Nastycar Taurus and the RWD, V8 IROC Avenger

In all seriousness, the Viper has been racing for 3 years or so which
has given Daimler/Chrysler a huge jump in development. Chevy just
started with this new Corvette - not a bad first showing.

My '90 GMC came with a disclaimer in the Owners' Manual that
essentially stated "Through no fault of GM, the paint on your new
vehicle may fade and check. While GM is at no fault, GM may choose
to repaint your vehicle at GM's expense". Gee, I wonder why they
included that in their Owners' Manual <g>

German paint, OTOH, is fantastic. My BMW has been painted at least
once in it's sordid history. The newer paint blows goats - water
spots galore, oxidation after one day of exposure to the sun, etc.
The original stuff looks good for months - I guess it's b/c the cover
is quietly "polishing" the roof.

Subject: [uuc] E36 325is Suspension Questions

I have a couple of questions about the Dinan E36 (325) Stage 1 Suspension,
that I want to run by the list experts who may have bought from Dinan.

Dinan offers either Bilstein or Koni adjustable shocks. Does anyone know if
these shocks are specially valved for Dinan, or are they the "standard"
shocks for the 325 that can be bought (much) cheaper elsewhere ? Are the
Bilsteins HD or Sport with the Stage 1 springs ?

Also, a general question about Bilstein Sports. Apart from $50 per set and
one less tube, what is the difference (stiffness, ride quality etc.) between
the Twin Tube Sports and the new Mono Tube Sports ?

Cheers

Car and Driver reports .90 g cornering for the M5 in this month's "Battle of
the Best" comparison test of the Jag XJR, the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, and the
M5. I would believe their numbers over any manufacturer's sales brochure.
0-60 mph 4.8
1/4 mile 13.3 @ 108 mph
Top speed (limited) 156
70-0 Braking 156 ft

Actually even that comment Milo made about the Speedvision races doesn't
hold much water. Bobby Archer's Viper ended up winning the championship.
The only BMW wins came from Kermit Upton when he drove the wheels off of
that M3 at Road Atlanta.

Better take the Viper out of the argument and start picking on his Mustang
Cobra, or is that Mudstain? Rustang? Five-point-slo? heh...heh... gotta
love trash talk.

Subject: [uuc] Viper v. M5

Just so happens that John Hennessey has been a regular
poster to the bmwm5.com message board. If you go back
a few days you will find his Viper v. M5 comparison.
The Viper was faster but it shocked John at how close
the M5 could stay with the Viper to about 120mph,
especially from a rolling start. He stated that he
thinks the 1/4 mile time is not representative of the
cars capability. By the way, the M5's LATERAL acc. #
is not 1.2g's. That was some other measurement.
Recent magazine reveiws have obtain numbers in the .9
range--which is awesome for a 4000lb car.

Would he agree with Milo that an M5 would blow away a
Viper? No way. He has actually added the E39 M5 to
product line and has already developed an adjustable
exhaust system similar to that he developed for the
Viper. He happens to have been driving a 540i Sport
for the last few years in addition to his Vipers.
www.hennesseymotorsports.com. By the way, he is also
slapping a big brake kit on the car right away. The
stock brakes do not hold up well to track use.

Consider this for a moment:

It just bothers me how some people can be so infatuated with these
overpriced German cars that are expensive to own and maintain and are
simply status symbols. They are just cars, things that get you from
here to there.

Take a moment to realize how snobbish your sentence sounded if heard
through someone else's ears. And if you think non-German cars aren't
designed and engineered, you are a fool.
