Hi all,
I'm going through my trusty mags here (or maybe not so trusty) and I'm
coming up with some different curb weights for these cars. We are talking
US. models aren't we?

First off, E28 M5:
Automobile magazine, Aug.1987 "Curb weight 3420 lb"
Car and Driver, Dec.1987 "Curb weight.............3504 lb"

E34 M5:
Motor Trend, May 1991 "Mfr's curb weight, lb 3804"
Road & Track, Aug 1990 "Curb weight...............3950lb"

E39 M5; MB E55
Motor Trend, Mar. 2000 "Base curb weight, lb.....(M5) 3792;.........(E55)
3680"
Road & Track, Mar. 2000 "Curb weight................(M5) 4000
lb;......(E55) 3620 lb"

Go figure? If you believe MT, the new M5 actually LOST weight! According
to R&T, it only gained 50# over the previous model. Regardless, it's at
LEAST 300-400 lbs heavier than an E28 M5, which itself is probably 200 lbs
heavier than my E28 535is. Conclusion: TOO HEAVY.

PS. Let's see, 4000 lb divided by 400 hp ....................... I only
need to squeeze about 130 more hp out of my "IS" to match the new M5's
hp/weight ratio, hmmm........

branded gas (I do use 93 octane)? I was wondering if anyone had an idea on
how to fix this problem so I can get my car to pass inspection?"

Greg, another post said to warm or heat up your CATS to normal operating
temperature. Another thing you should try is to change your engine oil a few
days before the test. Hopefully you'll pass next time.

Chris,

You might be onto something with the short drive, although it seems really
odd that it would come up after only 100 miles of driving. More than a few
people in my office live less than a mile away and have had experiences with
"check engine" lights coming on. I've heard that the short drive can be a
problem and have recommended they go drive the car for a long warm-up on the
highway. 9 times out of 10 this has cleared up their fault. This seems to
be more of an issue for people who never drive anywhere outside of the
half-mile to work and back. As long as on some regular basis - once a week?
- - you go on an extended run I wouldn't think this should ever come up.

Good luck,

Mike Olsen

"the "Check Engine" light just came on again...my house is only one
mile from my office. Could the daily short trips be a factor, since the car
doesn't really have a chance to warm up?"

Serious as a heart attack and certainly not normal.

If your engine has had pistons melt down or get damaged somehow, you should
be damn glad you're not paying for the repair!

Ask your dealer for an explanation of what caused this damage.

Easy, it's called a turbo. Wonderful spinning, whizzing device. Makes a
cool sound.

But then again, you could do that to the M5 (or at least an old one) also...

On the contrary, Zach, some people DO get it. Please do not come down on Jerry. He
did not state lies, so he had every right to say what he did. I am sure you will
find, if the truth be told, that he is not nearly alone. I highly respect Jim for his
engineering expertise and appreciate his contributions to the various lists, but
obviously commitments and time management are not among his strong points. I see
plenty of arguing and comments on people on the digest, and there is no reason why Jim
should be immune to this. He is a brilliant engineer, but no god. I am sure (hope)
he would agree.

Absolutely not.

Next to something like brain cancer - no, next to other things which
could go bad with your car - yes. On a scale of 1-10 of things I
wouldn't want to hear - this is a 9.9

>Q.3. Should I be on the lookout for any other related problems that may
develop
>out of warranty b/c of this?

Probably. I'd want to know WHY it needs piston(s), and if there was
any damage to the bore(s)

Questions:

1. Are you the first owner?
2. Aftermarket chip?
3. Any possibility of the 5-2 shift over-rev happening?

If 2 or 3 = true - you may find the warranty doesn't cover the repairs..

If 1 = not true - could be # 2 and #3 are true without you knowing it...

Thanks for making me feel worse...

Questions:

1. Are you the first owner? - No, but I bought it w/ 15K from the original who
was a sales rep a the dealership who just happened to be a 55 year old lady.. I
am doubting it was reprogrammed & even if it was, wouldn't it have been erased
when they did the upgrade due to the cold idle issue..?

2. Aftermarket chip?
3. Any possibility of the 5-2 shift over-rev happening? - No absolutely not... &
I checked the diagnostics & it does not show an overrev... actually when the
check engine light came on I was driving in a freaking funeral procession that
just happened to be an hour drive from the services.. so it was VERY easy
driving for the last several hours of running time prior to the light coming
on...

Also, the dealer is doing the work under warranty .. at least they told me they
were ordering massive parts & did not ask for any approval.. the car still is
under warranty for 1 1/2 years or 27K.. So far the dealer is being very vague..
they simply told me that they were ordering pistons & to keep the loaner... that
they would be in touch tomorrow if it was ready..

Should I go down & try to get more information?

TIA, Lee

Subject: [uuc] 2 red Z8's sited in LA area

Hi, fellow enthusiasts,

Today's morning (~11:30AM) commute to work this morning was brightened by
the citing of 2 RED Z8's. They were on 101 going West (North) between
Woodman Ave and Tampa Ave, for those who are familiar with the area. Or 101
and 405 intersection, for those who aren't.

They were following each other rather closely for wet road conditions.
I caught up with the following car long enough to show him my appreciation
of the vehicle by raising a thumb up (the other hand on the wheel, where it
belongs in rainy weather). He smiled back. Then I had to hastily get off the
freeway, because I already missed my exit.

The cars were not disguised in any way, they also had the following Munich
licence plates:

  Leading car M:ZZ 8813
Following car M:ZZ 8831

I thought this might be interesting to those of you who keep an eye on
"upcoming models".

Happy Driving,
Jan.

It would help if I knew the numbers. Idle, 2500 rpm or loaded on a dyno?
High HC is due to misfire. Check the plugs and wires. Rich mixture would
make high CO and HC. This could also be caused by a lean misfire.

Folks,
I am contemplating adding to the existing stable a used 740 or 750,
probably of an early-to-mid 90's vintage. I vaguely remember seeing some
cautionary messages in the B-C-G or uucdigest about years to avoid for
these cars, so I am polling both groups for input. I think there was a
problem with the early engines in some of the 740s and transmission
problems with one or the other. Can anyone give me any real world
experience with reliability and drivability issues with the early 90's 7s?
What is the performance difference between the 740 and 750? Any editorial
comments on either vehicle? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I may just be a total skeptic,
but are you sure it was her car and not the dealer runabout / demonstrator
that many potential buyers drove ?

I would want to know exactly why they think it happened, and what the
potential harm the rest of the engine may be, who knows what has gone
through the oil system (hence the whole engine) if there was piston damage.
