It has a 120k miles on it. Someone told him the chain should be changed a 100k per BMW. Someone else said nope, just a timing chain like any other. So which is it? It also has a very rough idle. I seem to recall reading something about one of the sensors going bad quite often on this engine. Or did I dream that? Thanks for any help on this. I had a few dents removed from my M635CSi by some guys in Texas, and was amazed at the results, and how they got to the dents. They removed about 4 dings from the doors and a very shallow 8" vertical crease in rear quarter of the car. All were invisible after the job. The way they accessed the areas was simpler than removing the interior panels, and simpler than drilling. They had wood and plastic wedges which they tapped into the window seams with the windows down. This spread the inner and outer door panel enough to give them access for the tools they use to press the dent out from the inside. Though the rear windows in an M635CSi don't go down all the way, they were able to make a big enough gap between the window and the outside panel to do the work removing the 8" crease. The guy who did my car clearly knew what he was doing, about 5 minutes per dent. I would attribute the high level of skill to the fact that there were a lot of hail storms in the area, and there were a lot of paintless repair shops. Total cost $150 for 5 dents on three panels. From start to finish, including setting up flourescent lights with black tape running lengthwise, to help see when a dent was gone, it took the guy 45 minutes. Assuming 15 minutes of travel time, and full booking over a 200 day work year, the guys was taking down $240K/yr. taking out dents. Probably the worst thing about it is, I would have paid more, given that the body shop estimate to remove the dents was about $1K. Stand it up on one cage and add a few drops to the upper bearing. There are no real oil points - just let a few drops seep in around the bearing cover, wait about 5 minutes to let it soak in and add a few more drops. Then turn it upside down and do the other end. I repeat a few times, and rotate the fan cages in between. Just don't get oil in the brushes. I've saved two this way that sounded like Stuka divebombers in a hail storm. If that fails, get a used one - I think E12 fits. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2000 12:10:20 -0800 From: "Chao, Harvey" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] anybody Know this Brian Foster person? Does anyone know if coolant (containing ethylene glycol) will burn at 1200 F? I'm helping a friend rebuild his 2nd generation RX-7 and we had a bit of an engine fire. We ruled out oil (and it defiantly wasn't gas). We had a lot of coolant spillover on the exhaust manifold, which when hot is about 1200 deg. Is it possible, once the water evaporates off, that the ethylene glycol could burn??? BTW: Both First Alert chemical extinguishers we had FAILED to propel any of the chemical. YIKES!!! Mufflers are big & heavy, and Jaguar did, once. It tried attaching transducers to the exhaust system and basically rattling it out-of-phase. The results were a mild decrease in volume and a change in engine note as heard from the cabin. (Mere amplitude is only part of the equation.) Some work was done to reduce engine noise *outside* the car - EC noise regs have since strangled the life out of many exhaust notes - but the power required to counteract the noise created exhaust pulses was too great, sensitive to ear position and the conditions too harsh for externally-mounted transducers to survive for long. Jaguar ditched the idea after they clinicked it with loyal owners, who liked the trad Jaguar six-cylinder snarl, and wanted to keep engine noise as it was. I kind of agree - it was technology for technology's sake - and Jagaurs are hardly known for their NVH problems or obnoxious exhaust tone. This technology is useful in less emotionally-charged environments; various other automotive and engineering consultancies also researched the technology for use in aircraft, trucks and buses, and it's already in use (Bose has developed ANC headphones for pilots that cancel cockpit noise). The nice bit about doing this research was I got to talk to some great people from Jaguar, including Nick Scheele (boss) and Jim Randle (drivetrain guru). OBMWC: I wrote to BMW as well, of course, hoping to blag a free trip to Munich, but they didn't even reply. Dwell at TDC is not an advantage per se but slower piston velocity means that optimum ignition timing is later with a long rod and that reduces negative work done during compression. A long rod more closely approximates pure sinusoidal motion. As the rod is shortened, the acceleration and force at TDC is increased but these are reduced at BDC. What formula(s) are you using? The formula is difficult to program into a single column. I always split it out in several columns so I can see the changes in the different parts of the equation as crank angle changes. This is how I did mine. Column Formula A angle B stroke/2 * cosine column A C stroke/2 * sine column A D column C squared E rod length^2 - column D F square root of column E G column B + column F (this is the position of the piston) H column G - stroke/2 - rod length (this makes the position 0 when the angle is 0) Gary Derian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > I wonder if any list members can help me with a technical question. > > I wrote an Excel spreadsheet over the weekend to create a graph of piston > position vs. crankshaft angle. > > My goal was to try to see exactly how much effect there is from going to a > longer rod while keeping the stroke unchanged (i.e. increasing the rod > ratio). > > >From everything I have heard and read the advantages of going to a longer > rod are as follows: > > 1.
