I think most of these buildings merely have masking noise, not anti noise. They output a tunable whitish/pinkish whooshing noise to raise the ambient noise level to a point where you don't hear the other less periodic clunking, humming, whistling noises generated by pipes, motors, and cow-orkers. At the last place I worked, the amps for that system were in the computer room. When the UPS crapped out and turned the whole room off, it got eeeerily quiet in the office. That's when we knew it was time to panic. You'd be well served to dump the load leveling suspension - if it's not leaking yet, it will be soon. Dinan sells an elimination kit which is mainly parts which are straight from the BMW parts bin for a 535iS. If I recall, the part numbers are listed on MFormation as well. My car has Dinan springs and Bilstein sports - fairly firm, almost punishing ride, just the way I like it. Don't forget when you order shocks that there is no such thing as a replacement rear shock for an E28 M5 - you'll have to ask for a 535iS. Particularly the distinction you make between harmonic noise and non-harmonic noise! Yes, white noise generators are frequently used to mask, and not reduce, noise in the workplace. Basically, noise with equal content at a wide range of frequencies played continuously. The ear adjusts to the raised level, since it is constantly present, and screens it out. Sound that is intermittent - printers, etc. - cannot be screened out by the ear and does reach the brain, causing irritation. Tests on cat's ears indicated that the ear was able to stop sending messages to the brain after about 20 mins of listening to a periodic beep. The beep no longer registered with the brain. Changing the periodicity or frequency made it appear again. The ear had built in processing power and wasn't just like mike. This is what happens with the human ear and white noise. Also, there are commercially successful applications other than this one. Noise cancelling headphones are cheap and fairly common. About $100 should get you a pair from Sony. Let me take you back to the 8th grade....Cunningham Junior High School where the principal would always rant during the morning and say, "Remember kids: Walk, Walk, Walk, Read, Read, Read, Write, Write, Write.." One fine Spring day, the woman gym teacher (who happened to fall into the stereo-types...*nudge* *nudge*...but that's a different story) announced that there would be tryouts to represent the school at a competition with some of the local junior high school. All those who wished to tryout would be excused from class the scheduled time of the tryouts. So here I am thinking, "Hey...this would be a great way to miss a boring class of Earth Science.....I guess I'll try out." I think I persuaded a friend to come along or maybe he persuaded me to go. At any rate, we were in the playground, breathing the wonderful air, and most imprrtantly, not in earth science! =) Lessee....what in the world should I try out for? Football toss? Nah...although I had a good arm, there were many oafs in my school who could hurl the ball further. Long jump? Hmmm....lessee...I a 5'5" Chinese boy....yeah, I'm really going to leap frog further than Mr. I-had-too-much-hormones-look-at-me-I'm-so-tall dude.....yeah right! Well, I think I run fast...the line is nice and long...why not? So my buddy and I stand on line and wait. You do race against someone, but all heats are timed and the fastest dude gets to represent the school. One by one, it's getting closer to my turn. I could feel my heart racing....adrenaline pumping through my veins. The girl that I liked at the time (yeah...I liked a lot of them, but there's a big difference between liking someone and being liked back...Heck, I like Yasmeen Bleethe (sp?) you don't see her knocking down my door, do you?) happened to be trying for the girl's football toss. She was a tom-boy and boy, could she loft that ball so far! So with added pressure, the gym teacher in the school yard told me to take my spot. It seemed that the world stopped at that moment and all attention was focused on me. "On your mark..... Get set.... GO!" I'm off to a quick start...little legs carrying me as fast as they can... I look next to me....wow!, I'm winning! I cross the finish line....something like 9.9 seconds....FTD! Wow...I beat out a lot of kids from my school! Victory was mine...and cutie was watching! Life was good! The competition would be held at a local high school's track and field (Brooklyn'ers...that would be Midwood Field). Did I train like Rocky Balboa? Um...no. Did I do anything special? Nope. Basically, this was a great day to miss class ;) But I feel good. I'm pumped. I was pretty quick, no? Yeah...I'll at least place somewhere respectable, right? So I wait around...waiting for the 100m dash. They announce that the event was taking place. I stroll over and try to size up the competition. It was then that I realized that the "local" junior high schools were some bad ass schools from the bad ass neighborhoods. Runner #1 was a rather slender African American dude who was a few inches taller than me, rather slim....he looked like Michael Jordan. Great. Runner #2 was a heavy-set African American dude who looked like he played football and stuff...several inches taller again. Runner #3 the same Runner #4 ...this dude nearly made me turn around and go home, tail between my legs. He was an African American dude who was way taller than me, almost a full set of gold capped teeth, had bunches of leg hair, *and* the straitions in the quads. "Holy shit....what friggin grade was he in?" I think I saw him at around the same time the the judge met him. I think the judge had a similar concern and asked the young gentleman which grade he was in. He replied, "I'm 13." ...yeah, should have been more like, "I belong in the 13th grade, but I got left back because the school likes me to win!" So...we all mosey down to one end of the field while I have this nervous look about my face. "Why couldn't Marco (Cunningham's sweetheart) run faster than me during the trials so that I wouldn't have to suffer this humiliation???? Why, God? Why?" We get to the starting line... "On your marks.... Get set...." *BOOOOOM* _All_ of the other runners were at least a good 20 feet ahead of me before I could even blink my eyes. I started the chase, but crossed the finish line when no one cared and everyone was already huddled around the three boys who already crossed the line seconds ago. Man...this sucks! I'm humiliated....thank gawd the little cutie (or anyone in my class for that matter) wasn't at the competition to see me almost shrink to a pea and start crying! Then I hear the announcer say, "runners for the 1000m dash please gather at the staggered start/stop line." My gym teacher comes up to me and sez, "Chester...that's you! Make us proud!" "What? No one told me about the 1000m dash... Must I suffer more pain?" "No mas." I gather by the event coordinator and hear that they will be drawing straws to choose lane assignments. I draw the shortest straw. Yay...that'll give me the ticket to win...NOT!!!!! So I get the inside lane, but I start the furthest back because of shorter distance. "On your marks.... get set.... GO!" We all start off. I'm determined to maintain a nice even pace through the first turn. "Nice and smooth...nice and smooth," I mumble as I round the first turn. "Any second now...I should be able to pass them because of the shorter lane....any second..." The turn ends, and I'm no where near them. They were all a good 10 - 20 feet ahead of me and they were merging to the inside lane. Oh man... Now I feel my lungs start to burn like a mutha...f*cka... "this........can't....be.....g...g....good." *cough* *cough* "I look like a friggin' retard!!!!!!!" I finally round the second turn of the oval...the home stretch lies before me, but the other dudes are already 10 feet away from the finish line!!!! "Oh what's the point?" I'm not going to bust my ass only to cross the line and have no one to congratulate me on my achievement. No siree! So I just give up and walk off the track. Tired, gagging, and gasping for air...I look for the gym teacher. An utter look of disgustment was on his face. Oh well.... I then see a bunch of people from my school and head over there....comfort from fellow classmates, right? WRONG! Two girls walked over to me and one sez, "Why couldn't you run faster? What's wrong with you? You suck!" ...and delivers a sucker punch to my stomach.... Just to let you know, I came in 5th overall.....that's worth something, right?
