In regards to the camera being in the drivers sightline, I have seen the mounts go in the lower right hand corner of the windshield. I don't know what kind of shot it would get of the track from there, but I don't think that it would be in the way. Why not hang it out the window like cops do with radar? Then you could pick up all the sounds of the wind and the car. I understand they did give a nice boost but require premium gas. Never bothered with mine because of 27 mpg t&c on regular and plenty of pep, until I moved to Colorado. In a word - excellent. You can drive through drifted areas at highway speeds (lower than posted of course) without feeling any slippage or tendency to get loose. On a snowpacked road we could take corners at speeds which would spin out a normal car without feeling any loss of control. As with 4 wheel drive if you get over confident and try to outdrive traffic you are in deep sh*t fast but going with the flow is a breeze. My pickup with sandbags in the rear, by comparison is a a handful at all times. Now if everyone else on the road would get this setup! The general approach to driving on public roads is more spirited than we might be accustomed to in N. America, but then the average skill levels are MUCH higher in Germany. Thus it is not surprising that the German organizers of the school might think that participants should be driving within the window of street based limits. Participants are welcome to bring helmets, and it is unfortunate that Dan felt out of place for being safety conscious. It needs to be securely bolted to the rollcage, preferably with a secondary strap to keep it snug if the mount point (camera to mount) fails. Personally, I have no desire to have a camera ricocheting around inside my car at speed on a track, but that's just me. :) (I have an IO Port mount in the race car and JTD's rear headrest mount in the BMW. As a few of you may know (but most probably don't) my truck/enclosed trailer/car was involved in an accident on the way to the Solo II Nationals in Topeka last Sept. The rig slid into the median of I-77 and the trailer flopped over on its side just as it slid to a stop. The right side of the car suffered sheetmetal damage against the inside wall of the trailer, but none of the right side window glass was broken and the chassis was carefully checked on a frame machine and was not found to be damaged. The hood and left front fender were slightly damaged from a tire falling off the tire rack. The hood, both front fenders, the right door skin, and the right rear quarter panel were replaced with BMW factory parts, and the entire car was repainted. IMO, the body shop did an excellent job in repairing and repainting the car. I do not intend to sell the car to anyone without disclosing that it has been in an accident. I also realize that many people would not want to buy it knowing that it has been damaged, no matter how expertly it has been repaired. I have tried to price the car with this in mind. This car has been street-driven and autocrossed in SCCA Solo II events. It has not been run at any track events. It has won several SCCA Divisional, National, and ProSolo events over the past 2 seasons in A Stock, and placed 4th in a large AS class at the '98 Solo II Nationals. The details are: '98 M3 Coupe, 5-sp, Red w/light grey leather, heated power seats, no sunroof, cruise control, factory alloys, factory rear wing, OBC, Harmon-Kardon stereo and factory CD changer, Koni single-adjustable shocks, 19k miles, $33,500. For 2 times now I have had water in the back of the passenger compartment, but only on the right sides floor. There is no obvious leakage in any of the seals and the underside of the car seems ok (as far as I could see...). So any hints where the water could possibly rinse in and under the carpet is greatly appreciated (by me and the poor soul of service rep. that had to pay each and every repair bill up till now since I bought the car some weeks ago). That rear headrest thing sounds pretty trick, _if_ your car is equipped with rear headrests :0 I really don't find that a sony handicam (not much bigger than the rear view mirror that is already there) colocated with the rear view mirror as much of a visual impediment, especially if your eyes are looking up the track, but hey - that's me. As for their allowance in driver's schools, I've used this setup at instructor only days as well as with students in the car at bunches of events.
