I just went over to bmwcca.org and joined. Finally. So I'll be registering for the Highway Safety School in April. Not sure I'll be able to make the Driver's School that same weekend, though. A few quick questions for the NCC folks: 1. Is the Highway Safety School $95 per person or per car? My wife is actually interested in going also. I can't believe it... 2. Where should I go to have the pre-school certification done? I'm in Ashburn so something in the Dulles/Reston/Herndon area would be good. I don't know when the brake fluid was last flushed and I think I need a rear shock mount replaced. Curry's? Dulles International Motorsport? 3. Where to go to get a helmet? You can't work this sharing a car to the best of my knowledge so you'll either need to come with two vehicles or do one this year and the other next. (I think it's only offered once a year). Unless the rules have changed you can run what you normally drive and several folks have shown up with their SUVs (really nasty handling but you need to find that out in a controlled environment!). Answer 2 is easy. Curry's is a sponsor for me in my ITS car _and_ he does a good job, is definitely an enthusiast himself, and genuinely cares that everyone who deals with him leaves happy. Answer 3 would have to be OG Racing in Manassas. I can't remember their address but they're back in an industrial area just off 234 at 66. They have a web site at http://www.ogracing.com/ with number where you can call. I highly recommend trying on the helmets for fit and view as well as trying it sitting in your car. I have a set of BBS RA wheels. 2 wheels are 16X7 offset ET 11 the other 2 are 16X8 offset ET 24. The wheels came off of my 85' 635 CSI euro. They fit with no problems. The wheels have a one inch lip from the air stem. I have the BBS center caps. The wheels are silver, with a polished lip. I started refinishing the wheels but there aren't any coin op car washes here in NYC so I will not be able to complete the project. 3 wheels are in good shape minor scuffs, one wheel has curb rash. It COULD lead to a spin BUT since the rear wheels on an FWD car don't do more than keep the fuel tank off the pavement, it is more a side-effect of the nose-heavy weight distribution. Of course, if the driver isn't smooth, the single rear wheel can be easily overloaded, thus starting a slide. Once the rear lifts, the weight transfer distribution becomes 100% front. Typical weight transfer distribution for a FWD is 50/50. RWD typically has 80/20. There are several places. Driving Impressions in Dover has a large stock of helmets you can try on. Note that their prices are at least MSRP, and possibly higher. However, you might be willing to trade price for the ability to try on different helmets. A lot of people have strong brand preference because of fit, etc. Also, it's hard to figure out what size is best without trying them on (and sizes vary between brands). Well, the NJ chapter is having 5 schools this year, for a total of 5 days at Summit and 4 days at Lime Rock. This is pretty many. Note that if you apply to Lime Rock correctly (ie, correct application postmarked on the first day) you will likely get in after 1 or 2 tries. Novice classes are the most difficult to get into these days. Also note that our Summit Point schools do not sell out until close to the date, and that our fantastic 3-day schoool in May is available right now. 2 days, 2 directions at Jefferson, then 1 day on the big track. It's hard to imagine a better first school. Several other chapters have schools that might not immediately sell out, but note that most Lime Rock schools for any chapter sell out quickly, and many other chapters require non-members to apply 1 week after members (as opposed to NJ's 1 day (which is moot anyway, since we usually sell out the first day)). For a novice, I would prefer a BMW CCA school over other organizations like PDA. TrackMasters at the Glen might be good, too.
