If you're sure its bled thoroughly ( and I believe there is a trick to yours) then check the movement of the throw out arm to make sure the cyls are actually pumping fluid. E.g., the seals in the slave could be shot so the arm doesn't move far enough. I've also seen hyd hoses swollen shut thus restricting flow. Better check all that because next step is pull the tranny. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 17:09:25 -0500 From: Rich Beebe <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] re: My first school - thanks Tim Taylor wrote: > Thanks to Pat Donahue, Duane Collie, Donna Seeley, Ronnie Lewis, and > Steve Schlossman for the kind words and encouragement regarding > driver's schools. tim, i had hoped to email you about the HSS/drivers school issue when it was first being discussed, but i just never got around to it. the good thing is, you have already heard from 4 very active NCC members on the topic and i'm sure they have told you everything you will need to know about whether a HSS is worthwhile or not. my 'short' answer would be; it's absolutely worth it, do it. you'll learn things at the HSS that you wouldn't have the opportunity to learn otherwise. it's a great first step. > A few quick questions for the NCC folks: > 1. Dulles International Motorsport? curry's or dulles would both be fine. matt curry (curry's automotive) is one of our top sponsors for NCC events and i would recommend his shop for your needs. matt's a great guy and everyone that works at his shop is very helpful and knowledgeable (they just did some work for me this past weekend and i live in baltimore, md) curry's - 703.502.0400. talk to matt or chris coulter. as for the brake fluid, have it checked/flushed before the school. the form you will need to complete requires that you have fresh fluid within the last 6 months. if you have any doubts, fill with new fluid. if there are any other questionable areas on your car (rear shock mount), have them looked at/repaired before the school. > 3. She offered to sell it to me for $6,000.00. It is black w/tan interior, automatic, seems to be fully loaded with sunroof and OBC. Has 95k miles and is in good shape (California Car). I wanted to know if this is about what they are worth. I looked them up on autotrader.com and they seem to be going for the $9,000 range. I am concered about it's actual value because I would only purchase it to take it off her hands and would probably just turn around and sell it again. I want to make sure I won't take a loss on it. I have driven FWD and RWD cars in competitive circumstances. I greatly prefer RWD. Handling is complex and has many components. Even though one component has an understeer effect, 4 others can have an oversteer effect and outweigh the understeer. Even though lifting a rear tire produces more understeer in a FWD, you can still lose the tail due to dynamic circumstances like lifting in a corner. If you don't have data that's OK. If you are being philosophical and using reasoning to draw conclusions that's OK too. I don't want to shut anyone up. I was just asking that we try to explain our reasoning rather than making statements as fact (I'm sure I am inadvertently guilty of the same thing). OK, we're almost on the same page now. Rear weight has transferred completely to the outside rear wheel and front weight continues to transfer at the front. But this was already happening, so unless you lift a little or jerk the wheel or left-foot-brake, there will be no "kink" or suddenly increased loading of the outside front tire. Weight continues to transfer from the inside front to the outside front smoothly. Even at the moment the inside rear begins lifting. > The typical 50/50 for FWD and 80/20 for RWD is steady state cornering. I still don't understand this. Aerodynamics aside, f/r weight balance is pretty much unchanged during steady state (constant speed & radius) cornering. So the 60/40 FWD and the 50/50 RWD cars still has close to 60/40 and 50/50 weight distribution in the middle of the turn. The only way the FWD car will have 50/50 dist. is if it's accelerating hard in 1st gear. Likewise, the only way the RWD car will have 80/20 dist. is if it was fitted with a Movit-Porsche big brake kit and was slowing down at 1.2 g's. Or are you talking about side-to-side weight distribution at the front? That would make more sense, but there will always be some weight transfer. It wouldn't be 50/50 on the FWD car. - -Luis Marques '97 328i ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 17:47:29 -0500 (EST) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Dynotuning w/ Jim C. in NCC I'm working with Matt Curry at Curry's Auto to put on a dyno-tuning session with Jim Conforti in the national capital area.
