Kevin,

I used the BMW camber repair bearings for my '91 M5 as part of switching to
the complete Dinan Stage I suspension (yeah, no sways added) and new front
dampers as well. The entire package really helped turn-in. If you just
want to put in some camber plates you might try Ground Control just to see
if they have something for your car. Their E36 camber plates are a thing of
beauty and they are functional (I run the E30 variant on my race car). Go
to http://www.ground-control.com/ and see what they have to say.

And then Bill said:
It was either the mufflers or the spare would take up the space of one
of the three golf bags that are a mandatory fit in every 5 series
car(since it comes with golf bag placement instructions that would
require an major engineering study on golf bag placement if anything
changed in the trunk).

However, since M-Mobility is placed in a well with a sh$t load of
styrafoam to hold it in place, the whole mess takes up at least 50% of
the room of a spare. I would have thought the engineering geniuses at
BMW would have figured out some way to fit in a spare. Hell I'd even
give up 2 of the golf bags. I run 45 profile tires on one of my Volvos
and have had experience with a cut sidewall where fix-a-flat goop even
from BMW wouldn't put air back in the tire. I'm probably going to give
up some of the luggage carrying capability on long trips so that I can
carry a real spare (and my own jack, since it doesn't come with that
either).;^) ;^)

If that just sounded like a rant it's not, I'm too busy grinning from
ear to ear every time I drive this car.

Lagoon? Laguna green, please. Laguna has a nice, upscale sound. "Lagoon"
sounds more like some kind of pond scum.

I love that Laguna color. It was actually an E36 color that ended up on a
few E30 sedans and convertibles at the end of the E30 production run.
While I'm trying not to "invest" too much money in my E30 (saving up for a
newer M3 some day, you know), I'd just about give my left testicle for a
Laguna green E30 325i 4 door with sport package.

Sorry,
(having a lousy day: ask Scott Miller about my spelling ;)
It sounded like you were checking out how much you can make by re-selling
her car on the market.
Anyway, the resale value for these late E30's are amazingly respectable. A
'90 325is will cost you almost as much as a '90 735i!
For price guidelines, check out:
http://www.nada.com
http://www.edmunds.com
http://www.kbb.com

Edmund's will always be on the way way way low side. Nada is roughly right
on the money. KBB will have the highest resale values. For totally out of
this world prices on used bimmers, see the Roundel for sale adds ;-)

good luck,

Let's see. Where is your right hand when you're driving? So presuming you want to
minimize the time your hand is off the wheel when shifting, then where would be the
best place to locate the shift knob? 8^)

Or: have you ever seen the inside of a modern Super Touring car? Notice where the
shifter is relative to the steering wheel?

Subject: [uuc] Fixing titles

Anyone have experience fixing errors in titles in NJ?

I sold my M3 and when the lein holder faxed a copy of the title to
the buyer, he noticed it read 231426 miles vs. 31426. Thankfully,
I still have the odometer disclosure from the dealer and it reads
31426 but it's not notarized.

The DMV won't even look into it until my lein holder sends them
the title.

I'm very concerned about this. What's the Carfax report going to
look like after they fix the title, assuming they even do? Will
it show the error then the correction? I could see that being a
problem for a potential future buyer.

I believe 5500rpm is VTEC's engagment point when it switches to the
performance cam, at least this is true for the other performance VTEC models
(Civic Si, Prelude SH, ITR, etc.). I can verify this with my Honda driving
friends but I am almost positive of this.

<< Yes, you should of course have used the same percentage

It might not be so simple as there are other variables. And the Honda peaks
at 8300 so what do you use for max revs? Don't forget that this is just an
anecdotal test. For one thing the cars are geared differently. And mine is
lightly modified. One magazine says max S2000 revs are 8800 another says
9000 or more. If we use the 8800 from R&T in the drivetrain section of the
recent test then an equal percentage would give 4531 for a 7250 max stocker,
4750 for Dinan chipped and 5125 for ERT. If we use the 4500 RPM limit then
we need to shift the M3 into 4th at around 50 mph while the S2000 drops into
it's 4th gear at around 56 MPH So the M3 spends less time in the lower
gears and has to gain 2 1/2 times the MPH in 4th gear than the Honda. Also
the M3 doesn't need super high revs to launch. In the case of the Honda
running at 5500 RPM max, that is the launch RPM which idealy would be 7500
RPM. The BMW needs way less, in my case around 2500 or so. So you can
launch it as hard as evfer in a test like this one. See what I mean about
too many variables?

However you'd like to crunch it the E30 M3 retains more of it's acceleration
when running at lower revs than does the S2000. The Early M3 is frequently
criticized for being dead below 4000 compared to above...well it is but less
so than some other cars. In the case of the Honda it is mild below around
6000 and then goes totally wild.

Without patronising the general BMW buying public, I believe you may be in
the minority here, John. The threat of leaving BMW with a puce 7 series,
complete with silver bonnet and fur-lined dashboard (Karl Lagerfeld's car)
sitting on the lot is too great for them to put the programme properly into
place in come countries.

I inquired about some trim/paint changes to my 318is when I bought it five
years ago - paint from the 5 series range and half-leather trim on the
standard, not sports seats. After the sharp intake of breath I was told that
it was perfectly possible via the Individual programme, but would cost me
the earth (about two thousand quid for the paint, fifteen hundred for the
trim). A waste, basically. The lead time would be considerably greater than
the estimated five months (!) for a car built with "standard" options, if
you see what I mean. Moreover, I would be requested to put down an almighty
deposit, presumably to offset the cost of having to sell a non-standard 3
should I renege on the deal. Mind you, that was one small dealer on the
outskirts of London not used to supplying anything other than the usual
stock. No doubt a Central London dealership would have treated the matter
rather more indifferently.

Further on the subject of BMW's propensity to mount the engine well back in
the chassis: it's to optimise weight distribution, according to the
brochures I've read over the years. Haynes' instructions on changing plugs
on the six-cylinder cars didn't indicate any trouble getting to the rearmost
cylinder. This desire to achieve balance is presumably why the V8 in the X5
is mounted about a foot lower than the bonnet line (forcing the front axle
to run through the sump).

The four-pot cars are practically mid-engined, if you think about it; the
distance between the front axle and the engine is probably similar to the
gap between the rear axle and the engine of many traditional "mid-engined"
cars. (Does the engine have to be towards the rear of the car to be called
"mid-engined"?). I could almost stand in the gap between the front of the
engine and the radiator of my old coupe, if it wasn't for all that plastic.
