I can verify this with my Honda driving friends but I am almost positive of this.>>> Bear in mind that the S2000 uses 2 VTEC cam lobes, unlike its other VTEC brethren. In effect, if 5500 rpm is one of the crossover points, it's hindered by the lack of not just its high end cam profile, but also a more intermediate (likely torque oriented, though probably also related to fuel efficiency) timimg. OTOH, when people comment that the S2000 may mark the beginning of Honda's superiority over BMW as the world's foremost engine builder, I feel compelled to point out that even pre-VaNoS BMW engines, such as the S14, demonstrate a mastery and performance dominance that Honda has yet to achieve even with such techno-aids. I think you guys got me pegged wrong. I'm not defending BMW's not offering an individual program, I'm telling you what they tell the dealer as to why certain things can't be done or must cost so damn much extra. This whole thread started with an NA employee saying the program exists. That's bunk. And as Jim Powell said, if there is a program, it should work. And, also that customers in this bracket should be able to get what they want. But that is not the case. With the Z8, BMW is touting that 6-10 days prior to DELIVERY, a customer can change the specs on his/her Z8 with his dealer, via the internet. Obviously, considering shipping, this ain't gonna happen in the US. But then this model priced at nearly $130,000 comes in only 6 colors with only 4 interior choices, so big damn deal. ben keyes wrote: >I'm not familiar with the way that BMW numbers parts & assemblies as >shipped to >thier plants, but Ford uses a "feature based" release system where the nearly >complete I/P is shipped into the plant in sequence. the I/P is a >collection of >parts that are selected based on the "feature" they represent. this >allows you >to mix & match pieces to make the paritcular I/P that you want, so long as >logical rules are followed. But it is for BMW Manufacturing. US suppliers of bumpers for the Zs and Xs make them to BMW specs. Not for the car, but for the same color car. BMW has no part number for an MZ bumper in a 2.8 Z color. They say the inventory problems and costs of tracking one-off items make this the reason for not doing Individual orders. That is currently the reason why no Individual color orders are available for the X5, nor will they be for probably a year. The console pieces are different in the different models. That's BMW's excuse for why it takes 2 years to produce an airbag cut-off switch for an M roadster. The cars are different. Not my excuse for them, but theirs. I'm not saying they are correct or justified, just that that is what they are dealing with. Should they be more responsive in this market segment? Of course. Are they? No. >I know this all too well, having worked in an assembly plant (Louisville >Assembly - makes Explorer/Mountaineer) for 4 years. sometimes you just can't >do stuff because it's too much of a hassle. That really is the bottom line. And I know this from 20+ years dealing with customer orders at a BMW dealership. Your dealer may be a scum, but the fact he can't get a straight answer to your Individual request is probably not his fault. - -Phil Marx ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 20:48:13 -0500 From: mark becker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Trailer hitch for '97-'99 540 6 speed Can a trailer hitch be fitted to a 540 6 speed that will tow a light trailer and load such as a jet ski or snowmobile? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 20:09:54 -0600 From: "Dave Lacki" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] E34 Diff. fluid draining question.. There are also tech questions and answers (some very technical), race team interviews (from international to regional), and product updates/info. If you have questions, they have an 800 tech line for you to call! Inside the Jan/Feb issue are a full motorsports race schedule (F1 to NHRA) and the details on one of their lucrative contingency programs. To top it all off, I get this magazine only b/c I once, a long time ago, showed some interest in autocrossing one of its cars and asked for more info. The company? DaimlerChrysler! The magazine is Mopar Performance News. The inside back cover of the Jan/Feb issue makes one drool -- a crate Viper motor being touted to early model year Viper owners and, get this, street rod people! You can even buy an installation manual that shows all the critical dimensions, engine and tranny mounting points, over 100 photos, etc., all so you can put the motor in whatever vehicle you want! Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but I had no reason to pay attention then. A fellow CCA member is converting his '99 M3 into a race car. I can get the stock seats for what I consider a decent price. (I suppose I should ask the list, do you folks think $600 for the pair is a decent price for virtually new seats?) What I really want to know is the degree of difficulty in adding heaters. The notion is that these non-power, all manual adjustment seats would be installed in my E34 '93 525i turbo. While I would lose the power seat functions, I don't mind that so much in gaining more supportive sport seats. I do mind losing the seat heaters I have now, though. Although as a single data point, my M5 had a week 49 build (so let's say December 6) and was in my driveway on December 28. I realize that I probably hit the shipping schedule just right, am close to the POE, and also got a year end push to sell the committed iron before year end (which I learned later cost me about $400 because the luxo tax dropped Jan1), All they have to do is air freight those suckers over here and they can hit that 10 day thing. 8^O They can advertise it that way and how many times will they really have to do it?
