My 91 535i seems to have some peculiar behaviour pertaining to the
alignment. If I execute a tight turn (let's say left u-turn at full
lock), when the car straightens out, it will not track straight
forward. The car will pull to the left as if you have a big alignment
problem with the toe.

But, if I make a sharp right hand turn (a little less than full lock),
the car will track straight. It is almost as if the toe is moving. I
can make smaller and smaller turns back and forth and get it straight
and the car acts normal until I dial in a bunch of steering again.

The car does have K-Mac camber plates and the top mounting bolts are
torqued correctly. I did have my wife turn the steering wheel from
lock-to-lock while looking at the top of the strut. It seemed to move
in a cone shape. Not sure if that is normal, because I never looked at
the stock setup while doing the same thing.

Anybody have any ideas?

Hi Rob,
I was just curious about the options on the 528i. I know you probably don't
know the details of someone else's car off the top of your head, but when
you get the chance, could you let me know a bit more specifically? I don't
even really know what the options are on E39's... Premium Package, heated
seats, fold-down rear seats, glass moonroof or steel sunroof? That's all I
can think of, but there's gotta be others.

Thanks,
Matt M.

[FYI] Just in case anyone is in the market and wants to save a few ducats,
Pop's new ride will (finally) be delivered the first or second week in
April.
He's planning on trading in the '97 E39, and of course they aren't giving
him squat for it. I drove it last week, and it is as new, 100% stock. (He
takes it awful easy on things...) Nothing in it for me - just thought
someone besides the dealer might enjoy a little bonus.

Many people have pondered:

<< "BMW Individual -Available or No? >>

It is if; you have the right dealer, the patience of Job, and and a wad of
cash up front. Not exactly something the "average" purchaser has. The one I
have only took 8 months to get. The LTW took longer than that, but that's
another topic.

BMW ought to include a set of M diapers in various sizes, for the first time
those M newbies who switch off the DSC and floor an E39 M5 in a turn. : )

I had a quick look at the new BMW Accessories catalog at the dealership
yesterday, but I didn't take it because they only had one left. It seems BMW
now has a separate catalog for clothing.

The beloved Roundel is notably absent from nearly every item in the clothing
catalog. Instead, the clothes simply have the letters, BMW. This is rumored
to be BMWs latest idea for trademark protection; make sure no one sees it.
(Meanwhile, Ford -- who would very much like to own BMW -- allows it's logo
to be plastered on everything from childrens lunchboxes to womens
undergarments. You can tattoo the Ford logo on your head, if you want.
Doesn't seem to hurt them very much.)

There were "M style" items, but I didn't notice any M5 stuff in particular.
There may not be any due to the trademark thing. I'll grab the clothing
catalog next time I'm there.

First, to answer Dave's question. It's a 10 or a 14 mm Allen that you need,
same as the drain plug. Snap On and a lot of others I'm sure, have a short
3/8" drive socket that will allow you to break it loose if you have a
quality (thin head) ratchet.

Otherwise, run down to your local tool store and buy the appropriate sized
Allen key, and a hacksaw. Cut the key to fit.

BASIC MECHANICS 101

NEVER drain fluid from ANYTHING until you are certain you can get fluid back
into it.

A good mechanic will ALWAYS remove the fill plug first. It's much better
than disabling the vehicle because you drained the oil and
stripped/broke/can't remove the fill plug.

Hey John, Jim Ochi musta known you'd be "gunnin'" for him, he just put a
newer aftermarket suspension on his M3 (replacing the older aftermarket
suspension he already had, as if he wasn't already fast enough?). But
don't worry, he's in a different class (the car, not as an individual), and
you'll stand half a chance since Pete Mottaz may have already sold his E30
318is.

And I'll be keeping my kidneys, thank you.

Hi Matt,

Your guess is as good as mine! I'm not intimately familiar with E39
options.

Luckily, as it is a current car, a dealer brochure would have all the info
you need.

Of course, part of the problem is that if you shred a tire, the fix-a-flat
goop does no good. Even if you start with a small puncture, if you cannot
safely pull over, you end up driving on the tire to a safe place, by which
time it has become shredded. Then where do you put the goop cartridge?
Wait, let's not go there.

At least there is room in the trunk for the flat tire/wheel combo once it
is removed from the car, unlike the M roadster, where you have to decide
which to leave at the side of the road, your tire, your (small) luggage, or
your S.O.

In general, it is futile to predict or compare automobile prices between
different countries based on the exchange rate alone.
Few countries share identical packages and base trim options factored into
local prices.
But most importantly, tax obligations vary wildly from country to country.
>From mind bugging in south east Asia, to average in Europe and relatively
small in the US.
Thus an E46 M3 can end up costing around 47k in UK and $47K in the US,
regardless of exchange rates.
