Here's a follow up on what I bought and how the trip went. Based on the opinion of several digesters I ended up buying tire cables (~$35.) The parts counter at the local stealer also recommended cables. The parts counter also mentioned that the factory solution is something like spider spikes (www.spikes-spider.com.) They're cheap, they ride reasonably well, and they don't add much clearance to the tire. The drive up to Tahoe was uneventful. The snow line was somewhere between 3000 and 4000 ft. HW 50 was completely open all the way up. I didn't have a chance to play in the snow (read: donuts!) until we hit an unploughed lot in south tahoe. Saturday morning we were headed to sierra. Chain controls were in effect on 50 so we bummed a ride off of a pair of friends with trucks. (4wd w/ snow tires usually are not required to run chains.) My fiancee and I were forced to split up because there were already 4 people in each truck. Her car went up first, we grabbed breakfast. After eating Mickey D's we headed up. Near the top of 50 we see a white explorer on the opposite side of the road, facing the wrong way. Then I recognize one of the occupants of the truck. It was my fiancee's car. We quick turn around and round up everyone. Of course she is the only person who was hurt (cuts on the face from her glasses and a bump on the head.) The explorer driver was doing ~ 40 when he hit a patch of ice and lost it. The truck hit both front corners and 1 rear corner. Both airbags went off. The frame is bent and the truck was undriveable. BTW, CHP was incredible. They were on the scene in under 5 minutes and provided plenty of help in making sure everyone was okay and getting the truck out. These guys are awesome. This was the driver's 2nd spin for the day. The first time he was trying to pass someone when we hit snow. The truck started to slide and he was unable to correct. The resulting incident was a full 360. Moral of the story: don't put loved one's in a car with SoCal drivers in the snow!! The next morning we had 12 inches of fresh powder on the ground. The cables went on my car. BTW, they go on really easy in a dry garage when you can jack up the car. We dug out of the driveway and headed out. I never did over 25 mph all the way up 50 until we got out of chain control. The cables did not rub and did provide traction. If you wanna take your BMW skiing cables work. The only problem was being passed by so many trucks and a few STUPID CAR DRIVERS. On the way home one driver in an altima came up behind us at high speed (say 45 mph in the snow, us at 20 mph.) He hit the brakes hard and barely missed our rear. Soon he illegally passed us and gave a dirty look. 15 miles up the road (in freezing rain) we saw the same altima on the side of the road, part of a BIG accident. At least one vehicle was overturned, the altima was crushed in the front. Wanna bet who was at fault? Thanks to everyone who offered advice on the tire chains. - -Bill Isaacson 94 325i (the ultimate snow mobile.) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Rather than sell them to a local cowboy, I would love to pass my tow truck and flat car hauler trailer on to another track junkie. It is in Utah, but I would consider delivering for a fair deal. Maybe that 'feature' should be selectable depending on which coded key you use. The feature IS capable of being disabled by the driver at their convenience. Perhaps Duane doesn't realize that fact. However, it isn't a part of the coded key feature set. Personally, I love it. I have a typical 40 year old California size garage, very small, so parking accuracy is crucial. I have a pair of parking stops stuck to the floor, and the tilt down mirror makes it pretty easy to position the cars in correct spot repeatedly. It also prevents getting close to curbs and damaging my nice ///M parallel spoke wheels. BMW sells, in very small numbers, something called an L7 which, unlike leather-covered L7s of '80s vintage, is a 750iL with about 60 cm extra grafted into the middle. Locally it costs A$375,000 but you do get an awful lot of wood and leather. Same 326 bhp V12. Despite the factory figures, engine outputs are usually a fair bit lower here than the equivalent in Europe or the US, but it still gets manages 60 mph in 7-odd sec and 15 in the quarter-mile. Would be fun to see that being punted round the track by the chauffeur on his afternoon off. Turns out, my diagnostics led me to a missing signal from the ECM (engine control module - the fuel injection computer) to the ECM Main Relay that supplies 12V power to most of the engine (injectors, fuel pump, etc). I pulled the ECM computer out of the car, and using a multimeter, traced the circuit from pin 27 (the signal that turns on the ECM Main Relay), and learned that there was a break in the circuit near a solder pad (mfg. test point?). Visually I could see some water damage to the computer board - corrosion and water stains on about 1/4 of the board, visible from underneath the PC board. Using a small piece of PC-board prototyping wire, I bypassed the damaged trace and re-installed the ECM. I was ecstatic when the car started up and ran again! Maybe this is why I had a very intermittent loss of power at high RPM (5000 or so) in the past... Now, I have to search through the old digests to see how to alleviate the water leakage that caused this problem. Anyone have any quick advice? - - Rich '94 325i w/ sport package - happily running again. - -----Original Message----- From: Richard Haus Sent: Friday, February 25, 2000 7:29 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: [E36] stopped running - ECM relay good, but not turning on (no ground to activating coil) I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I had today with my '94 325i. I had just left work today at lunchtime, when the engine stalled when idling at a stoplight. I re-started it, and drove another 2-3 blocks, when the tach needle dropped to zero and the engine died. I pulled over, tried again to re-start, and although the starter turned over, it wouldn't start. FUEL PUMP NOT RUNNING - FUSE OK The fuel pump was not running, verified by holding my hand over the pump while cranking (I removed the back seat cushion and fuel pump cover plate). I didn't have my Bentley manual with me, but I checked Fuse 18 (fuel pump), and it was good. I also switched around several pairs of like-colored relays - not knowing which one was the fuel pump relay. FUEL PUMP RELAY CHECKED - RELAY OK, NOT BEING ACTIVATED After towing the car home, I found in Bentley which relay was the fuel pump, and followed their check procedure. The fuel pump did't run unless I manually bypassed the relay. Then, the pump worked fine, but the car wouldn't start. There is no +power to the activation side of the fuel pump relay - this is the RED/WHITE wire - relay terminal 86. According to the schematic, this power comes from the ECM relay being turned on. ECM (Engine Control Module) RELAY CHECKED - RELAY OK, NOT BEING ACTIVATED Next, using the Bentley engine management schematic (p. ELE-76), I learned that the ECM relay was not being turned on (no click). I checked for +power and ground to the activation side of the ECM relay (pins 86/85). +Power was there (at both relay pins 30 and 86), but the activation ground was not (pin 85 - brown wire). If I bypass the relay the engine starts and runs fine. According to the schematic, pin85 goes directly from the ECM - to a terminal called "ECM RLY CTRL". So, here's are my question: 1) What generates the signal from the ECM RLY CTRL terminal on the ECM - and why would it not be working? 2) Is is possible that the factory alarm or the OBC's ignition lockout is interrupting the signal? Thanks very much for your thoughts.
