Should I extend my trip? Where to stay? Enough questions for tonight. An update for those helping me troubleshoot my 535. It still has the loping idle that's preventing it from passing emissions inspection. I've got a few more things to try before giving up and taking it to a shop. Hi all, I've had the Jim C air intake in my car for about 2 months now and I'm not happy with the noise. It seems to me that the noise is very unhealthy. People that ride with me in the car tell me the same thing...almost as if there is something hollow under the hood which is making a higher pitched, throatier noise. I know what a 'good' throaty noise sounds like, and from the inside of the car, it doesn't sound right. I also noticed that if I punch that gas while idle, I'll hear it gasp for a quick second. Is what I'm experiencing normal? I've also noticed I've lost 2mpg or so, which probably makes sense since more air is getting to the engine. Arrival was almost without incident, my flight arrived about 30 minutes early. Brett's flight was delayed... ya see, when you get one of those Aussie bastards all liquored up in the airport bar before a trip, weird things happen and they delay the flight. Brett, I don't think she'll marry you even though her father says she must. Brett showed up an hour late. At least I got a good walking tour of the Atlanta airport - all 7 miles of it. The car was every bit as I expected. Brett did a thorough check-over and when the worst thing he says is "it'll need a new thrust arm bushing", I knew everything is a-okay. Love that Avus Blue and with the Touring, there are plenty of large open expanses of it to enjoy the color. Steve Castle's description of the test-drive was completely correct... except I wasn't driving. In fact, I didn't even drive it until after the deal was done, which nobody else realized until that point. I figured what the hell, I know I'm buying the damn car, I flew all the way down here, it checks out fine, so I'll experience it in just a little while while driving home. Having bought it without driving it is just a technicality, right? Driving home was a pleasure. The E34 has plenty of room to stretch out in the front seats and lying down in the rear would have been an option. This car loves the open road, devouring the miles like a college kid at a party with the alst back of chips. High speed cruising is effortless, the M5 seems to get more stable the faster it goes, amazing. The really interesting part is that high speed is not necessary - it's also extremely comfortable at slow speeds. The E28 M5 which says "Come on, drive me fast, what are ya a wuss or sumthin'? Let's move it or I shall question your manhood further!" The E34 M5 has a completely different attitude, more of a "tamed beast" that is happy giving rides at a little kid's birthday party or jumping through rings of fire at Cirque du Soleil. That convoluted comparison is meant to imply that the car is tractable at any speed, and doesn't get you frustrated because it's not singing at 7,000 rpm. TOYS. Oh my word, the car has toys. Sure, a bunch of these are familiar to newer 7-series and 5-series owners, but the level of electronic interconnection and useful gadgetry has jumped dramatically from the relative stone-age accessories in "The Beast", my '88 M5. EDC - this is semi-active suspension that can be switched between "S" (Sport) and "P" (Plush seemed appropriate). Nice difference between the two but even in "P" it is quite capable and supposedly firms up autoamtically when it senses "fun time". AUC - Automatic recirculate that sniffs pollen, smog, diesel fumes, Matt Yip, roadkill, or anything else you'd want to avoid smelling and switches the dual climate control to recirculate all by itself. OBC - the On Board Computer looks deceptively similar to what it is the older car, but sports a greater magnitude of features, different ways of planning and measuring your trip mileage, speed, fuel consumption, time, ETA, etc. Auxiliary heater - this neat-o featuer is supsiciously absent from US cars, I expect for liability reasons. What it does is allow you to set a time when the heater will go on and off by itself, incredibly useful for having a nice warm car waiting that also happened to melt of all the ice and snow. This is an independent heater that works *without* the motor running. Finally, the MOTOR. Wow, what a nice piece. This last version of the S38 got the distributorless ignition with an electronically controlled coil for each cylinder so there are no visible sparkplug wires. The 3.8-liter just plain hauls, none of the low-end torque deficiency that earlier S38s have been cited for. The exhaust is also larger than the 3.6-liter motors had so the tone is different. What a jewel of a motor. So that's it for now. JCWhitney does sell real Hella lights. Those will be fine. I haven't bought the cheapie lights with H4/H1 bulbs so I don't know how good they would be. My '97 M3 was skipping pretty badly lately. All this went away when I replaced my rear shock mounts (with JTD mounts). Turns out both stock mounts were cracked. I'm guessing those started transmitting more shocks & vibrations to the trunk, where the CD changer skipped.
