I designed the course from descriptions of the site I received from several sources. No one person had the description quite right, so I had to piece it together. Now that we've seen the place, one of my goals for future events there is to make the courses longer. This will be great for the drivers, but a pain for the course workers (a.k.a. coneheads) who will have to stand off the the side and then run to the center whenever a cone gets knocked down. I love the requests from various members on how to lay out the course. The V-8 guys (5- and 7-series) want long straights. The underpowered 3-series guys want lots of tight turns. What it does is allow you to set a time when the heater will go on and off by itself, incredibly useful for having a nice warm car waiting that also happened to melt of all the ice and snow. This is an independent heater that works *without* the motor running." I remember a BBC Top Gear program quite a few years ago that mentioned the existence of an insulated tank in the dash that hed coolant hot overnight. You could then, without wating for the engine to warm up, have hot air first thing in the morning. Perhaps the aux. heater on the M5 is an adaptation of the same thing with check valves, etc., to prevent the coolant in the tank from mixing with the cold engine coolant. It's retail prices are only fractionally lower then Roundel's adds (read: sellers' pipe dreams and buyers' nightmares). 2. http://www.nada.com lists acceptable mileage range as 90,001 - 100,000. Your car is in that range. NADA's Low Retail: $10,075, Average Retail: $11,950. I will skip High Retail since you've already scared off the perfectionists with 'one accident'. In my experience, NADA is right on the money. 3. http://www.edmunds.com has the lowest prices. There your car goes for between Trade-In $8,190 and Market $10,635. However, BMW have had a long tradition of misnaming models. Case in point: the 2.7 liter Eta engine. Both cars with that engine were misnamed (528e & 325e). Or Duane's favorite, the 320i, with a 1.8l four-banger. And there is a precident for Ci (think: "Csi"). I'm sure we could come up with misnamed BMWs all day. I guess the fact of the matter is, they're BMW's cars, and they can name them whatever the hell they want! To try them out I put a set of green pads on one of our 2002 race cars. This car has 320i vented rotors and 320i 2 piston calipers. We ran it at Las Vegas with 2 drivers in 3 run groups for 3 days. This is 6 track sessions per day. I was very impressed with the performance of these pads. They work great and held up well. Remember these are supposed to be street pads. Since then, we ran them at an open track day at Buttonwillow where we were using only 1/2 the track and no straight aways. We managed to over heat them when we really pushed the car hard. However they did not crumble or chunk like some other brands. Inspection showed about 1/2 thickness, so I put them back in for a race at PIR in Feb. Another 3 day event. By sunday the peddle was a little soft and travel a little more than usual but the car stopped well. BTW- I won both sat and sun. We have these on at least a doz. local street cars with good results. One car had a little squeal but it went away in about 200 miles. I should say these pads are very low dust, but if you push them hard they will dust. Heavier race cars should use the red pads for short races and yellow for enduros. Ireland Engineering is a stocking distributor for EBC. We offer BMW club members a 10% discount on the pads. I've also noticed I've lost 2mpg or so, >which probably makes sense since more air is getting to the engine. > >Anyone have suggestions or similar experiences? What you are experiencing is completely normal. All of the sound that you hear coming from your intake has always been there. You just couldn't hear it with the muffler effect of the stock airbox. If you look in the BMW factory parts catalog the stock air filter/intake box is listed as a "Suction Silencer/Intake Muffler". The factory named the stock airbox a muffler because it reduces volume level of reversive and mechanical sound of an intake. If the sound you get with the Shark Intake seems weird then think about it for a minute. Think of the sound that is created by a massive amount of air (up to 600kg/hr on the 3.2l M3) being sucked through a throttle body past a throttle plate at various opening angles. Then think of the mechanical noise that comes from the metal intake valve train opening and slamming shut at a rate of as much as 58 times per second. Then think of the reversive and harmonic wave forms that are created by the intake of a running engine. Believe it or not the air in the intake forms a pressure wave when it slams into the intake valve as it closes to prepare for the compression cycle of the engine. This process of reflection is known as reversion. This reversion has the ability to "bounce" the air all the way back out of the intake runner. On race cars with open runners the air/fuel mixture can be reflected all of the way to the top of the intake trumpet/runner. You can find fuel that was injected at the intake port of the head wetting the opening of the intake trumpet/runner during even high rpm operation. This is why an intake system is noisy. It's just the fact that we and are accustom to street/luxury cars which generally rob us of the (not to wax poetic) beautiful symphony that is the intake system sound. For some the intake sound is an acquired taste. And for some the intake sound is a taste that will never be acquired. Either way you will have to remove the factory airbox if you want to maximize performance. As far as fuel economy is concerned your changes would probably have more to do with changes in driving style than changes in the software and intake. I have had only one customer (not an intake customer) that informed me of a slight reduction in fuel economy (2mpg) on an E34 M5. The software by itself generally will improve fuel economy. Software improves fuel economy because the overall adjustments to the ignition/spark produces a more complete use of the air/fuel mixture. The intake increases fuel economy by lowing the pumping losses that are inherent in the stock "Suction Silencer/Intake Muffler" design.
