The Euro brain is a seemingly rare 061 and the US for the same years is an 059. Can the brains be swapped and will the timing, fuel injection be similar or are they completely incompatable. I know some 745i conversions used the US 008 brain. My hope is that the 059 brain will work. Do I need to replace the qwiring harness also. In Rob's case, it's controlled by the OBC and can run for up to 30 minutes per session, 2 sessions per cycle. It delivers hot air to the windshield and floor vents. I am pursuing a 1994 540i with 21,000 miles being sold buy an elderly lady here on Oahu. It does have the M60 Nikasil engine. It is out of the 6 year/100,000 mile "Enhanced Warranty" by only 2 weeks. However there is another, "Extended Warranty" sold by BMW of Honolulu that was purchased by the seller that is valid until January 2001. While making a long story, very short - here is my dilemna. Finally got BMW of Honolulu to perform the Leakdown Test. At first, the #3 cylinder failed at almost 40%. They performed the test 9 more times (so they say) after the first test and all cylinders passed with no more than 6%. They contend that there might have been some "carbon got stuck / valve problem" at first, but the engine is fine now and will not replace the block with a new Alusil block. They said that they would not have replaced it even if it failed again anyhow, because, despite the extremely low miles, the car was 2 weeks out of warranty. And as far as the Extended Warranty, the underwriters of that policy would not replace the short block due to the most current results of the Leakdown Test. The car is scheduled by me to see a private mechanic for another Leakdown test on Thursday to confirm BMW of Honolulu's test results. This low mileage, very clean car looks and appears to run well. Is it a good investment, or is the Nikasil engine kind of like a time bomb waiting to go off? How much should I expect to pay out of pocket in the future if I need the new short block ? Please post any comments or suggestions. How do I get my door open? I found some info on how to rebuild the lock but not how to get the locked door open. I asked the dealer sales rep. whether it was certified, and he said no, but they would certify it for about $900.00 if I wanted. He explained that certified simply meant extending to warranty to 100,000 miles, but did not include service (the 98's have warranty/sched. service included to 36,000 miles. He also said that certified cars do get a little more of a checkup than used non-certified, but that most of the $900.00 was paying for the extended warranty and some dealer profit.
