(The two canisters near the tank look kinda like the ones on Tad Laird's E30, but since I know everything on his car is way overengineered, I'm certain that can't be it on an E21). On the E30, it is 17mm wrench size. The factory torque spec for the regular drain plug is 24+2 lbs. ft. (33+3) Nm. Well, that's too much. Snapped it like a cracker, leaving the threaded part in the oil pan boss. No worries; I'll use an Easy Out on it next time I'm ready for an oil change. Hopefully it won't leak much $9 per quart Redline. I called the vendor where I bought the gauges, and ordered a new sending unit. Apparently, VDO recommends using only 18 lbs. ft. torque on their oil temperature sending unit/drain plug. Nice of VDO to include that tid-bit in the instructions, eh? So be advised, if you have one of these set ups. I've used 25 lbs. ft. on this part for several oil changes in the past with no apparent problem, but that must have weakened it. This is DEFINITELY not a job you want to trust to the speedy lube place: "PLINK...Uh...Sir?" I just got back from a DYNO session and have a few questions. My car is a '95 M3 with an Active Autowerke chip installed 03/97 and a K&N cone filter with the ECIS heatshield...that's it, for intake mods anyway :>) My first run shows "Max" Power @ 222.5 and "Max" Torque @ 207.1 The second run was "Max" Power @ 217.8 and "Max" Torque @ 209.3 The third run was "Max" Power @ 217.3 and "Max" Torque @ 210.1 Looking at the numbers, I see that my first run supposedly gave me the highest Max hp's but yet the Torque is the lowest of the three runs...is that "normal"? I was with Robbie Kollar and he and the others really thought my numbers would increase on the second and third runs. Well, I see that my Torque numbers increased but the hp's fell by 5hp's. Is this typical to see the numbers do this? I also had a rather big dip in hp's between 2500-2750 rpm's. Anyone else experiencing this on their dyno runs? I do get a distinct hesitation when I floor the accelerator. I suppose I need to contact AA to see if they had any bugs in the older chips that they may have worked out since '97. One other weird thing that occured was my tach seems to be off by 500rpm's. According to my DYNO's, I let off the gas at 6500 but yet I was taking the tach to 7000 inside my vehicle. The DYNO was calibrated to my tach @ idle speed. Has anyone else experienced their tach being off by as much as 500 rpm's? Is that chip related or do I potentially have a faulty tach? I have hit my rev limiter a couple of times...but according to this report, I was really only doing 6700 rpm when it happens. Again, would AA's chip possibly mess up my tach? Thanks for any insight into the mysteries of my DYNO. I'm new to the list; name's Dave Kendrick and I've had an '89 325ix for six years now. Some of my gauges are acting a bit erratic: the temp gauge occasionally goes in to the red zone but if I tap it or even just wait a bit, it drops back down to the midpoint; my fuel mileage gauge is stuck at 40mpg (wish it were true plus why have a mileage gauge in a performance sedan, anyway?); my tach doesn't operate all the time, the ABS light comes on and the brakes then don't 'ABS' until I restart the car and, lastly, the dash lights on the tach side sometimes don't function. This all started over the last few months. Now, ever since I bought the car in late '93, the service indicator lights haven't ever worked right and my mechanic says that's due to a crapped out SI board. But what about these more recent problems?: still SI-board related or not? I haven't asked my mechanic yet.
