I need help in a big way. I'm purchasing a complete E30 motor (M20B25) on
the opposite side of the country. I'm in northeast Tennessee and it's in
southern California. Can somebody, anybody point me in the right direction
for getting it shipped? I don't even know where to start. Nationwide
company? UPS have a special division for major stuff? Some kind of
industrial grade equipment shipper?! Surely someone on the list can help me
out. I'll tell you what Jim, Brett, Rob, et al... there's a plump healthy
sheep in it for ya if you come up with a solution! ;)

Hi Kids...

Well, after 4 days of working on other people's cars, riding in other
people's cars and dealing with other people's cars, I decided to take mine
out for a nice midnight drive up my favorite back mountain twisty... Kings
Mountain Road.

I got half way up the road and found it to be very slick... leaves, pine
needles, tree sap all that fun stuff, so I did the smart thing and turned
around to head back home for a nice cup of tea. For some stupid reason, I
guess I was just going too fast, I really don't know why. I wasn't nailing
it, trying to be a rally driver or any stupid thing like that, hell; I had
already decided it was too slippery to drive any further and was looking
forward to that Tazo... I guess I really wanted some.

I was driving at about 30mph (usually I am doing 50 through this section)
and through every other turn, I felt like I was going nice and slow for
conditions. I guess brain fade took over, because I didn't brake enough for
this one very sharp turn.

Now, previously at the track, I was complimented by my instructor on my
ability to get a car gracefully through a turn, even if I entered a bit too
fast. I enacted all those skills that seemed to have no trouble getting me
out of much worse situations this weekend at Sears Point, but to no avail.
As much as I tried, I simply couldn't keep from going off. Into the mud I
went, and it was all over, I put both feet in and SMACK. Pure understeer.
Pure brain fade. Purely my fault.

I hit the tree going around 20mph. Driver's side, right into the headlight
(hell, I needed a new headlamp on that side anyhow). The fender, bumper,
grill and hood are toast. The door got bent when I forced it open (I saw a
lot of smoke and a spark from the headlight, and was afraid of a fire) and
it got tweeked by the fender. Luckily, front ends on E36s are fairly
inexpensive to fix, because everything bolts together, no welding is
necessary.

Moral of the story:

1) It is really very easy to go too fast in these cars though it all comes
down to lack of concentration. I wasn't worried about the slippery
conditions any more, my brain turned off "Concentrate on Driving" mode
because I had already turned off that part of my mind when I packed it up to
go home. I was basically coasting down the mountain, overly relaxed.

2) If you are going to drive fast, do it at night. It is reasons like this
that I limit my "recreational" style driving to a late night, when the
chances of getting a passerby involved are virtually non existent. On a
road like Kings Mountain, visibility at night isn't a factor, given that
your headlights light up the maximum area you can see around the corners
anyhow. Also, what little oncoming traffic there is announces itself long
before it gets near you with their headlights.

4) I can now tell you that Schroth belts really REALLY work. I have no
airbags in my car because of a previous accident (truck backing into me)
that caused me more injuries because of the airbag then the accident itself.
I use a set of Schroth Autocontrol belts and now have LOTS of confidence in
them. I wasn't even dazed, I didn't get thrown about.

Mid-life crisis? Who are you trying to kid? More like a senior

The Aussie bastard gave my car the once-over as well, long after I'd
purchased it. It's never been the same since.

Rob had one poodle, now two - go figure. We think he's into some
ancient poodle breeding ritual but no one has the nerve to watch.

Brett's an Aussie. Considering the amount of vast lonely space down
under AND the availiablity of fluffy farm animals, well, I'll leave
the rest to your imagination.

you have to make sure you have completed the 180 degree rotation and
don't forget to heel and toe.. getting into non-synchromesh reverse is a
pain in the ass at 4000rpm :)

Subject: [uuc] Need help with sticking Bilsteins

I need to find out why my front Bilstein sports are nearly seized.
They were good used from a club-member's 533i, but they sat in a
junkyard for a while, on the car.

Has anyone ever rebuilt or taken one apart? Can I remove the nut
from the bottom of the yellow shock body without
depressurizing/ruining the shock? I'm guessing there are only some
spacers/bumpstops in there, and the rest of the damper assembly (top)
is self-contained. I know I can have them rebuilt, but that leaves
too much downtime.

Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and to the digest.
I read every one, but sometimes I miss things ;^)

Thanks for your help!

Subject: [uuc] E21 no start or the little engine that could'nt

Hi Matt,

I know the pain your friend is in, I once owned an 83 320i Sport. The
only BMW I did not bound with. Many a times I just wanted to walk away
and leave that friggin car at the side of the road where it had died.

Try the fuel pump under the car, driver side along side the exhaust
system.

Why the BMW engineers put the fuel pump right up next to the exhaust
system, where it would get hot and freeze up and stop I will never
understand.

I would be cruising along in the summer time and come to a stop when the
fuel pump would get hot and die until some time later when it got cooler
it would start up again. That car design had the German Demons (over
engineered) designed in to it.

It was a lot of fun to drive cross country in the Summer until it came
to a stop and died.

Good Luck to you and your friend,
Chris, Windy City Club

Subject: [uuc] E21 No Start

If the group could cast aside their 320 prejudices for just a moment, a
friend of mine as an 83 automatic that won't start. It appears to have
spark
at the coil, so I have proceeded under the assumption that the problem
is
fuel related. I see no damage to any of the fuel lines, but I can't find
the
filter. (The two canisters near the tank look kinda like the ones on Tad
Laird's E30, but since I know everything on his car is way
overengineered,
I'm certain that can't be it on an E21). Any suggestions about how to
proceed?

Thanks much,

My surprise SFR visit was to an SCCA Slush event, several months before i
bought the BMW. Everybody was wondering who this guy in the Golf was,
especially when i started beating their top-dog DSP trailer-queen cars :-)

It can't be any worse than the San Diego Chapter's events on the huge
Qualcomm West Lot ! You gotta run forever to pick up the cones. Is the
Marina Field site concrete or asphalt?

>GGC BMW CCA blah blah blah

A good course is one that flows well for *everybody*. Courses with tight U-Turns
and narrow L-shaped 90 degree turns are frustrating. We'd rather have a smooth
flowing 45 second course than a choppy tight 60 second course :-) I went to
your GGC website and saw that the event is being held at Marina field, which
has had NASA events with 60 second courses so i'm sure it's possible to set up
a longer course. Some small lots dictate that only one car can be on course
at a time and in that case, the course can be set up in such a way that the
car goes through the course one direction, then somewhere in the middle
you have a "pivot cone" where the driver makes a U-Turn around it and
goes back through the course the opposite direction back to the start/finish
line. We used to do this on a postage-stamp of a lot in Antelope Valley.
It's like having two different courses in one, and can be set up to be fast
and flowing while not taking up a lot of space.

If you run more than one car on course then this won't work of course :-)
Too bad it's so far away from L.A., i'd like to take-on them Super Audi's
i keep hearing about :-)
