I was at an impromptu dyno session Saturday in Woodbridge VA. Was talking to some folks about what I had done to my car. Well, I pop the hood to show them and one guy says "What the hell is that???". There is a mountain of little chewed up foam bits sitting right on top of the radiator shroud near the hood latch. I look up at the underside of the hood and sure enough, like a 1-foot square area of sound insulation material is chewed away, clear to the paint. MY M3 HAS MICE!!!! Damnation. Cleaned it up and went over everything under the hood. Mice like to eat insulation off of wires too. No obvious wire chewing. Short of placing a ///Mouse trap under the hood, I am clueless. I am thinking of just ripping the whole insulation thing out. It looks awful. I know, I'll put a cat under the hood..... BTW, this all happened since the last gas fill-up, less than 2 weeks ago. On the issue of mice, that reminded of a rather amusing yet sort of off top story... Right after college I worked in the IT department of a large Electronic Depot Repair organization. One of our customers was the largest manufacturer of small office and consumer grade printers. Basically, you would call their tech support line when your printer crumped out, they would supply you with an address to ship it back to, which was us, it was repaired and shipped back to you..... About 10-15 times per day, a printer would be opened up to find rat/mouse droppings in it and parts chewed on. Federal law required that we crush them so we actually had to purchase an industrial strength crusher to put them into... Actually many people in San Diego, and I assume points north, have the interiors of their cars redone in Tijuana and other border towns. I can't say its "bred into them" whatever that means but if you are a careful shopper you can get some nice work done at prices much lower than the San Diego metro area. Upsides: Cheaper labor No taxes Good Craftsmanship Generally good people with pride in doing a good job. Downsides: Warranty? There's not going to be legal help, you're relying on integrity. Leather. If you have a whole interior done, you will be happy. Want to match an existing interior? Buy the factory pieces you cheap scum. Time. Some of these shops work on their own schedule or are doing it on the side. If you need to drive your car daily, take a pass. Security. I would drop off seats etc. if I was going to replace them anyway. If the shop gets broken into, the stuff might be gone. Would I drive an umpteen thousand dollar M3 to Tijuana and leave it for a week or two or more? Not on your life. If you do, you have oatmeal for brains. The rats (looked like a small dog) make their home in the fan shroud on top of the engine. The solution we had is to put rat stickies in front of the engine. These pieces of stiff paper with super glue on them keep the rats stuck as soon as they step on them. You might want to secure a few to the engine area with zip ties. I suspect that most any English-reader seeing that sticker would prefer to think of the color as "Laguna Green," named after Laguna Beach, CA, especially since there's also a green color we believe is named after Boston, MA. (Although it could be Boston, PA, TX, KY, OH, VA, NY, IN, MI, GA, MO, LA, CT, AL, or TN) The Babelfish tells me that lagoon translates to lagune in German. Now for many people I suspect there's no problem associating a car color with a lagoon. A lagoon after all is probably a lovely place, a shallow body of water separated from the sea by sandbars or coral reefs. A place surrounded by coconut palms and white sand. A place where a young Brooke Shields may be seen swimming around buck nekkid. The problem for us in the USA is that there aren't that many lagoons with coconut palms and white sand beaches, and most of us here will probably never see the ones that we do have. We DO have a lot of lagoons though that fit the other definition: a shallow body of liquid waste material, as one in a dump. That's right, a lot of us live uncomfortably close to hog farms or water treatment plants that pump millions of gallons of foul water into lagoons for safekeeping and/or eventual processing.
