ALMS at Nurburgring??? Chester, After the initial success of ALMS in America, Don Panoz has been trying to expand ALMS to become the "International" Le Mans Series. Originally races were scheduled in Europe, Asia, Australia, and America for 1999. The Asian race didn't materialize, but we still have the Silverstone, Nurburgring and Adelaide races. There is also a new track being built on the island of Aruba, which will potentially host another ALMS race in the future. Anyway, this year there will be a 1000km race at Nurburgring (the 4.5 km F1 circuit, not the famous 21 km Nordschleife) This venue was selected as ALMS expects a lot of German fans to show up to cheer for the BMW's, Audis and Porsches. Silverstone was selected, as the UK has a long tradition of sports car racing, and a huge fan base. All our cars have become more and more computer controlled (dependent) and from a manufacturing point of view the next step is full networking of all onboard computers. Volvo has already done this with their S80 and all models that follow. There are 2 networks complete with routers etc. , a high speed for engine and safety systems, and a low speed for everything else. Why? Because where there used to be 2 - 50 pin connectors into the dash assembly there are now 2 - 2 wire network connections. LOWER COST OF MANUFACTURE!!!! There are a few cognizant Volvophiles who are upset at the direction Volvo has gone (including me) but the handwriting is on the wall and in 10 years even the cheapest POS will be built this way. In the Volvo implementation, everything form the heater-A/C to the audio system is on the network. If you change anything on the car (like the radio) the dealer has to satellite uplink to Mother Volvo via their proprietary VADIS system to get it to recognize the change. At least with the standards there is hope that as long as your local tuner has a network engineer on the payroll you can continue to improve your Bimmer. The dyno session was very interesting. My '92 325i was first on the dyno. More on the dyno later. However, there was a '88( I believe) supercharged 535 and a 93 M5 that got me lusting for more power. The M5 sounded as if it was a Learjet getting ready for flight. Seriously. The sound of that engine was just incredible, and I was told it was completely stock! Well, when I think about it why would you mess with a M5 with aftermarket mods when the car stock, make you think Learjet on a dyno. BMW has been known to name its colors after various scenarios like that, so this fits right in, and as you suggest average American buyer looks at the tag and mentally translates it to Laguna because it may be something they are familiar with. And like I mentioned, on the BMW Color and Upholstery for the BMW 3-Series (1 11 03 02 25 03/91 VM Printed in Germany they call the 266 color lagoon Green and judging by the look of it you have the 0391 or 0396 if its leather Parchment interior. Nice color, nice car. My E30 is in Kaschmirbeige Metallic (301) with the 0401 leatherette Parchment interior. I replaced the old switch with a new one, hooked the two terminals up and now the lights are on in neutral, with no change going into reverse. I pulled the switch out, connected the two terminals again and operated the switch by hand. ON-OFF, ON-OFF etc. Put the switch back in and the same thing. Lights on! Am I not seeing something here, like a case ground?? Can anyone shed light(sic!) on this problem?? I didn't overfill it. I just let the pump shut off when it was done. Once the car was parked in my garage a couple of mile away, it started dripping unleaded premium at a pretty good clip. Luckily, my wife was in the yard so I didn't just run into the house and close the garage door. The weather may have played a role. We have record breaking warmth here in northern IL today - 76 degrees. But, the underground gas tanks are quite cold still, perhaps mid-30's. Could this be the reason my gas tank spewed? The gas did not come out of the filler cap but from somewhere above the tank near the filler neck. All theories are welcome. I hope it stops dripping soon so I can close the garage tonight. If you are thinking of E36, Lagoon Green (sic, UK anyway) appeared earlier on in its life - until about '93 when Boston took over. You might find a picture of a Lagoon/una car in the Used Cars sections of brit BMW dealers' websites. As to the Lagoon/Laguna debate, I don't think either is appropriate. I thought a "lagoon" was usually blue, as in the film (I've never heard a waste dump referred to as a lagoon, but then I don't work in the waste management business). "Laguna" on the other hand, apart from sounding like a computer-generated euro-word that is neither correct nor incorrect, is the name of a slightly dull Renault saloon car of the early '90s. Obviously the choice of nomenclature was left up to the importers (speaking of which I'm delighted to annouce that the E36 bright red in Oz is often called "Hell Red", in a risible non-translation of the german). > Is Laguna Green lighter than Boston Green? I did my first repair since getting the car! The glass hatch had a nasty habit of refusing to open - the main hatch would open, but the glass hatch remained as firmly locked as my lips during that college game of 'spin the bottle' when the really nasty-looking girl's spin pointed to me. The microswitch (on the car, not the bottle) would click and with great Teutonic speed and precision absolutely nothing happened. Taking the liner off the hatch opening to get to the backside of the microswitch turned out to be a total bitch. Chris Turissi and I looked at it last weekend and figured out most of the little screws, mollies, clips, and tool kit parts that had to be removed... but I wasn't counting on the hidden clips nor did it occure to me that some screwed-in parts might be covered by the very glass hatch I was trying to get open. Sort of a Schr�dinger's Cat / Zen Puzzle sort of repair in hindsight - "repair of broken part easy after broken part is fixed". Knowing that I heard a little click each time I lifted the handle, I suspected nothing more than a dirty contact (a completely spurious conclusion as a click may have nothing to do with a bad electrical connection or circuit, but hope springs eternal) so my primary weapon was not a new switch but rather a spray can of electrical contact cleaner (also called TV Tuner Cleaner) that I picked up at an electronics supply store for $9.95. I sprayed what little of the mechanism I could see, took apart and sprayed all the harness connectors, and sprayed the electrical thingamajig (some call it an actuator, I call it a slingblade) that actually pops the window. Voila! The glass hatch pops every time.
