The Japanese manufacturers have a thing about tolerances - quality begins to decrease the moment something begins to deviate from spec. Therefore, they strive for perfection in manufacturing. In contrast, 'mericans view tolerances as merely a range to shoot for - any part that falls within the "go" range is as good as any other. A simplification of course, but it's thinking like this that helped manufacturers like Toyota earn their gold stars for low defect counts and high reliability. It bothers me that Chazzy, Wag, Fazle, and BoostJunkie are all having wet dreams about this car. You can ditch the stupid video screen and well hidden climate controls. You can ditch the center arm rest. You can ditch the metallic trim. You can ditch the numerous buttons on the steering wheel (does one of them make the car go left and right by any chance?). Exterior wise the car is better... except for the fender flares. Yup, I know some of you love 'em, but I just can't get past them. The E30 integrated a new flared fender that gave the car sexy look. These flares look like a cheap tack-on aftermarket afterthought. Reminds me of the second generation Supra (which defined tacky flared fenders). And what the hell is that opening on the side of the front quarter panel? Some sort of Z3/Z8 styling cue? Works on a retro drop top, not on a modern sports sedan. And the indentations in the rear bumper? An Audi touch looks like to me. I've got to tell you, I agree with the folks who are saying that the "fake" dual exhaust and other touches are too cheesy and not oriented towards actual performance. The car has become very Japanese looking styling wise - a real shame if you ask me. Maybe that's why it's such a hit on the Honda site? Of course, there's one saving grace: we'll finally get the "real" M motor in the US. That could turn everything around for me if I ever get to drive one of these things. The dashboard looks ergonomically sound enough to be able to do without the steering wheel controls. After all BMW has championed ergonomic excellence - from the safety aspect - for years. But then I'm not that keen on steering wheel controls, especially after a good few years when they start gumming up - - round about the time I'll be able to afford to drive an E46 M3 :(. Kevin, all I can say is that I personally recommend it. I find that when I drive aggressively my hands sweat a lot. Not good on the track to lose grip. I don't really autox, but do lots of driving schools. Fwiw, you shouldn't be moving your hands on the wheel anyway. But I find that wearing gloves really helps me keep a nice grip on the wheel, and afaik doesn't decrease "feel" at all; in fact if anything it adds to it. Really nice on the MOMO Corse wheel, too! Another point is that many people will recommend getting bright colored gloves so people can see your hands easily if you are pointing them by. I think it's a good point. Mine are orange, but mostly because they were the one pair that fit perfectly. I wanted I think black or red. Black car, black interior, red harnesses. Totally goes against the advice from the people mentioned above I guess. :) The more I think about it the more I like the orange anyway. At any rate, here goes... I think my car must just have a bad attitude. It can't handle it's owner not fawning over it every waking moment of the day. For instance... I buy a horse in the summer, and it decides to develop a mysterious squeal. *Only* displayed when driving away from the horse farm. I contemplate buying a new vehicle to tow my horse with, and its mileage drops from 32 mpg to 22 mpg. I drive my brother's new car and when I come back to mine, it has a nail in the tire. I don't have time to fix the tire for a couple days because I'm busy with school, and the tie rod end decides to quit. I drive a friend home from work and upon hearing him say "My Ford Contour is the best car I've ever driven", and my car decides to turn its engine off. (I can't blame it for this one.) And the cause of my current exasperation: I take my horse in a ride in a trailer pulled by *gasp* another vehicle and when I get back, it breaks its water pump belt. I opened the hood to get the belt out, and there's a liquid sprayed throughout the engine compartment. Coolant I assume. The emergency lights on the instrument panel are all illuminated. Only cold air will go thru the vents. The car is running hot of course, but only at the 3/4 mark, not into the red at all. And for what it's worth, I had to drive the car to work, and will drive it the 3 miles home when I leave work tonite (sorry guys, but a 19 yr old female walking 3 miles on back streets at midnight just can't be safe). Leaving the car in the lot is a $90/day proposition, so I have to get it home. So what exactly have I ruined on my car? Any takers? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as my thinking capability has just become inaccessible for the weekend.
