I am pretty lazy when it comes to car repairs & I typically just use the jack without jack stands unless I need to get my head under the car, and this thing has held up the car w/o stands for hours on end without dropping 1 micron. Anyone who uses a jack often enough to need (as opposed to just want) a $300 model is either a professional or has a POS car, in which case they can't afford the jack. The S-K may not be as accurate as one of the high-buck Snap-On, Facom, Proto, etc. ones, but it's good enough for wheel lugs... Beam-type torque wrenches are about as modern as a points and condensors. There are not even any premium tool makers selling them anymore. Hard to read (DAMN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE) on all but wheel lugs, try using one in the confines of torquing up a BMW caliper pin on the front brakes! Clik-type is the way to go.....every airline and the military uses those, and they place them on a rigid calibration program to make sure they stay in spec (they get dropped a lot, etc.). Most go with 215/40, but I prefer more side wall so I stepped up to 45. Under acceleration the wheels tucked sufficiently to rub -- my rear suspension sit about 2" lower than stock. Having read about using a base ball bat to roll the lip I went about it as instructed - place bat behind tire and have someone drive the car forward to roll the lip. My advice: do not ever do this! It does a bad job and the bat takes paint and the protective coating under the paint with it. Duane C's old "E36" method is what works very well with one addendum, use only rubber hammer and a hair dryer -- you simply heat up the paint so that it does not crack and strike where you need with the wheel off. It is surprising how evenly you can roll the fender with the rubber mallet. Now one side of my car has scraped off and cracked paint under the fenders and the other fenders finish looks factory! With this tire/wheel set up you NEED big brakes - not a shock considering the 10" stock rotors. The car does not want to stop even rolling backward down my driveway. It is my guess that the longer moment arm from the larger diameter tires is causing the drastic difference and, of course, the increased weight of the wheel/tire combo. I am going to go with a 12.5 or 13 inch rotor and upgraded calipers. - -Kyle 89 325is - losing all civility __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I was running my '87 635 hard last weekend for a short run. I hit 2nd gear into 3rd and the engine started to fumble and die. I just got pulled of to the side in time and shut it down. It started after a few tries but sounded as if was running on less than 6. I went to pull into the local mall parking lot to examine her for obvious signs of distress. I got under the hood in the dark and could not find anything obvious. I started her up again and it still sounded funny. Shut it down and call home for help! I waited for about 15 minutes for my son to arrive and we started the car up. Sounded OK so we tried to drive her home to the shop. Got in the shop OK, checked for all the usual items, adjusted the valves, changed plugs etc.The car seems to rev OK, but I have a complete lack of power from what it was. At the same time this happened, I started to have a loud rattle from inside the converter on the exhaust. It has gotten really loud lately. My question: Can this convertor problem and my power loss be related???? If not, what should I start looking to?? We did a compression check while we had the plugs out to rule out a head gasket problem and all checked OK, 135/140 across the board. I need help! Spring is almost here in PA. Thanks guys! Spring is almost here in PA. > Thanks guys! I'm assuming you didn't over-rev. Yeah, your converter may be blocked. I had this happen to a Turbo T-bird (don't laugh!). It would start and idle smoothly, and it would rev in neutral. But under any kind of load, it would not go beyond 3500. I finally diagnosed it by borrowing a straight pipe ("For testing purposes only - not for road use", as it said on the box) and putting it in place of the cat. All the power came back. Since the car had 48k miles, and the cat was warranteed for 50, Ford replaced it. Turned out the catalyst "honeycomb" itself had gotten blocked, so there weren't any rattling noises, just a distinct lack o' flow. I'd say "try a straight pipe", but I don't know what the 6-series exhaust systems are like. If it's like an E36, you'll be running around with nothing after the manifold down pipes. Never said owning a Honda means I don't want to lust after what you lust after. I said that I don't know exactly why I find it disturbing. I think the reason is that the previous M3 did not have a lot of what I would call "Boy-Racer" touches. It was a classic and clean design. I find the new one busy and somewhat tacky. If those who seem to me to like the "Boy Racer" look like the car (and most of the posts on that board fit that description to me), it just reinforces my dislike for it. I don't dislike the car because BoostJunkie likes it, I flat dislike the car. BoostJunkie's like for it just confirms that this car is not for me. And as I said, that could change if I ever get to drive one. > Yes, I've been watching the coming of the E46 M3 for a long time > now. Chaz, sorry if took it that way, but you took it wrong. Read my post again, there's nothing in there derogatory about Hondas! Heck, I even said "maybe it's not the Honda crowd that bothers me so much," then went on to list the things about the _car_ that I dislike. This is a BMW list, if "maybe it's not the Honda crowd" is offensive here, then so be it. > Amazing, isn't it? That someone that's interested in BMWs actually > owns a Honda? Absolutely startling? What makes you any different from > them that you can like the car and they can? I invite you to answer or > else I'll let your elitism stand. Never said any of that... you can like whatever you want. Here's the funny part Chaz, my daily driver is a... guess what? Yup. OH MY!! GASP! A HONDA!!!! The car I first really got into spirited driving instead of just straight line V-8 stuff years ago was a Honda too. And I've said here that I wish BMW had built the S2000. I happen to like Honda as a car and a company quite a bit. I still don't like the direction BMW is going with their products and worry about the fact that the new direction seems to appeal to a market (boy racers, not necessarily Honda owners) that I have tried to stay away from.
