Could be a problem with a stripped gear inside the unit, or perhaps the toothed cord isn't grabbing the winding spool properly (the fact that you can pull the antenna mast up or push it down doesn't sound good). I would suggest taking the unit apart - if you're at all mechanically inclined you can probably figure out what's wrong. Also, visit www.antennaworld.com - they have lots of good info on these antennas. Check out the technical information for Mercedes - there are assembly drawings for the various Hirschmann antennas, which have been used by BMW and Mercedes for years. Finally, contact Raul Pla at antennaworld via email, and he can very likely find replacement parts for you. Last month he sent me a bunch of gears so I could rebuid my antenna, all for $6! I drive it occassionally, it is easier to get my son Chris' wheelchair in and out of, etc. Well, it's been about 5 weeks since I drove it, and sure enough, the battery was dead. Using my daughter's Mustang, I jumped off the van, and it started right up - - and the dome light was on. Dropped the van off at the shop, and they called back saying it needed a water pump! And a battery. And a lube,oil,filter. All hoses/belts checked OK. So, $370 later, but the van is ready for Spring Break! Now what will Stella do when she is left HOME while the rest of us are in Melbourne, Fl. for Spring Break? But the reference to RR was appropriate, since it was Duane's car, and Mr. Collie's priorities have been well documented here. <hic> But this brings me to another used car value story that starts off in Porsche-land, but probably has a happy ending with OBMWC. My friend Bill, owner of the '85 323i with the tired engine, walks past a consignment car dealer in downtown Walnut Creek (CA) and sees a black 930 (for you non-Porsche-speaking Digesters, that's a 911 Turbo). Black on black, looks nice. He sees the price, kind of high, and goes away. But the next week he's back to look again. And he's asking me questions about Porsches (I keep old car magazines, so I can look up stuff like that for him). And he's checking the Kelley Blue Book. The price is way high. But it looks nice. So on about his fourth visit, he decides to get serious and asks to drive the car. The consignment dealer calls the owner, who is busy but offers to send his brother. While waiting for the brother, Bill gets more personal with his inspection. There are SCCA Racing stickers on the car, plus some (so far undisclosed) modifications. The registration expired 4 years ago. There's a puddle of oil under the engine! The owner's brother shows up. Bill asks if the puddle of oil is a concern. Not a problem, says the brother, it is normal. He doesn't even check the oil level! (My Porsche source tells me that oil leaks on the Turbos are NOT trivial, whereas they are fairly common on the normally aspirated 911s.) Then the brother asks how much experience Bill has in 911s. None, says Bill, but he mentions he has done a number of CCA drivers' schools. Doesn't matter, says the brother, the 930 is even trickier than the tricky 911s, so the brother will drive and Bill will be a passenger. Bill is suitably impressed with the acceleration - 100 MPH at the top of the freeway entrance ramp, 130 in short order until catching up with traffic, and the brakes haul it back to 55 in the blink of an eye. So Bill is jazzed, but still has problems with the asking price, $10K over high KBB. So he asks me again for advice. Let's see, 4 year old registration, may have been raced in some way, leaks oil (maybe because the seals dried up from lack of use?), they want way more than Blue Book, and you can't drive it? Bill, I say, WALK AWAY. This does not feel right, and you can always find another one somewhere, maybe even one that you can drive. Still, Bill is jazzed about the 930. A week later, reality has finally set in. He can't put his aging mother in the car, it would be too much of an ordeal for her to get in and out. There's no place for the kids to sit (they're getting to be adult sized and have legs, while the back seats of 911s are "designed" for really small people without legs). And when he does his mother's grocery shopping, Bill says "She buys more toilet paper than I can put in that car!" Bill finally admits that what he needs is a nice E34 M5. And, I pointed out, if he wants it to go as fast as a 930, he can always add a turbo or a supercharger or some such, and big brakes are only as far away as a call to Steve D. But, says Bill, what he really needs first is a garage. As for the 930, the seller has the wrong target market. He's probably not going to find his buyer walking down the street in Walnut Creek. For the asking price, he should start with the Porsche club. And if he's avoiding the club because of the oil leak, then the price should be lower. Or maybe he'll just get lucky and and find some schmuck who really wants the car and doesn't care if the engine is self-destructing, who knows? Paying dearly for a "special" car may be worth it, if you know the history of the car and its owner (Ben & Duane). The 930 is a completely different deal.
