The car is (apparently) an excellent example. Most of this stuff was considered normal 930 maintenance. Ouch. I was a tiny bit envious when he bought it after months of searching for about what I paid for my E36 M3 at the time. Less so when the bills started rolling in. I checked out the A4's (thinking a AWD A4 may be a good car for my girlfriend to lease). The sales rep was very friendly even after I explained I would not be buying a car and was window shopping. Also told him I had an M3 and was curious how the S4 stacked up. Got the usual sales pitch although he acknowledged the merits of the M3. I asked when they would be getting in a S4 and he said end of March. He offered to call me when it comes in so I can test drive it even though he knew I was not interested in buying the car. He even said about taking the car over night with no obligation. Long story short...I want to test drive the S4 when it arrives in order to see how the competition stacks up. I have no desire to trade in my M3 (due to personal and financial reasons). My only concern (which I expressed to the rep) is that I would want to test the limits of the S4 a little (bearing in mind the road, other drivers and conditions, etc.) although I would not want to do this if it was not broken in prior to me (which I assume it would not be as it would be brand spanking new). I do not mean that I would want to wring it's little S4 turbo neck. The sales rep assured me I could still come and together we could test the car without killing the thing and still get a good feel as to its abilities. Not sure what I will do....but at least I am cognizant enough not to beat the shit out a car I do not own like some I know (i.e., friends have told me stories like this many times and knew what I thought of them). Late November 99 I took my E34 to NTB for a front-end alignment - dropped off the keys only to see my car *screaming* down the road in front of NTB. I went to the managers office and he came outside with me while we waited for 5 minutes for my car to return - when it did he said, "Oh, there it is, my align guy like to take them out to see if they pull ect." Less than happy, but ok with that explanation I let them continue their work. Two weeks ago I returned to NTB (why, why, why!!) for an alignment on my 325is. This time no initial test drive, phew I thought. I even watched as this kid worked on the car. He drove the car off the rack and off he went, squealing tires and the whole 9 out of the parking lot - yes, I ran after him shaking my fist. Manager was out this time, so it was just me waiting for about 10 minutes! Next thing I see is a streak of red fly past the street, then the guy does a 180 right on a side street and takes off again! I blocked the way when he came to pull into NTB and told him to get out - the car smelt like clutch, anti freeze, and tires. He told me he was checking to see if the steering wheel was straight. I was livid to say the least, but I kept my cool. I have yet to hear back from the Manager. Until this morning, I had resolved to do the following harness installation on my E36 M3. (1) Schroth Competition 3" 6pt belts (2) Lap belts mounted slightly behind and between seat rails. Mounted with supplied snap ins' and backing plates. (3) dual sub belts mounted with snap ins directly under stock seat. Seat cut to fit subs between leg extension section. (4) Shoulder straps mounted to roll bar(TCKline). I called HMS this morning to order the harnesses and talked to Frank (Frank is an alias, since I didn't ask his/her permission to mention him/her). Frank was interested enough when I placed my order - to inquire about the harnesses use, car set-up etc. After a lengthy conversation, I came to the following conclusions/questions. (1) Sub belts are out. There is no way, using the stock seats, to install the subs so that they don't pull the camlock AWAY from my body when everything is snugged down. I'm average size (180lb, 5' 11") and there is a solid 5" between my crotch and the sub belt holes (assuming stock seats). This is a comment I have heard before from folks on the digest. (2) 3" lap belts may be uncomfortable and provide too wide a coverage across the lap. Ideally you want all of your belts to wrap across the hard parts of your frame. In the case of the lap belt, this would be your hip and pelvic bones (I think). The solution is to use 2" lap belts instead. (3) Frank, from HMS, informed me that Schroth recommends the stock DOT mounting points for lap belts. DOT standards require mounting points to sustain 3000lb/10s. I don't know if steel backed clip ins would be any stronger.?? In addition mounting behind the seat would tend to constrict the sides of the driver to the width of the mounting points during impact. Ouch! In contrast the outward location of the stock points would distribute much of the energy along the belts to the left and the right(not directly forward). A good free body diagram is required to truly discuss this point. Questions: a) What's worse: no sub belt, or a sub belt that may generate space between the belts and the driver. b) What is wrong with the stock mounting points? Why would Schroth recommend them if they're less than ideal?
