Subject: [uuc] Cleaning my air hole...

Hey guys,

I'm prepping my car for the new autocross season.
While cleaning the air intake passages I noticed a-lot
of black grime buildup inside the intake manifold.
Kind of reminds me of the sludge that used to build up
in the carburetor of my deceased '74 Mavrick.

Is there something I can spray in there while the car
is running to clean things up? I was thinking of some
carburetor cleaner but I don't want to trash the cat.
Besides I'm making sure there is nothing I can use as
an excuse for bad lap times :)

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA
Tarek

Subject: [uuc] Shop Guide to Brake Rotor Runout

I am amazed at the number of mechanics at specialty repair shops who do not
know how to check brake rotors for runout. Some simply measure the rotors
incorrectly, others fail to recognize the hub as a contributing factor, and
shops with brake lathes often do not use the equipment correctly. One shop
this week measured the outer part of the rotor hat (the part facing the
wheel) and assumed this was the cause of his brake shimmy.

When a customer comes in complaining of brake shimmy and you've test driven
the car to confirm the problem, proper diagnosis first entails checking the
obvious (wheel lug torque, bent wheel, tire pressure, suspension wear or
damage). If none of these factors are present, check the brake rotor
surface for lateral runout. The rotor assembly must be properly secured to
the hub with either shorter bolts (20mm in length) or a few thickness
washers with the factory lug nuts or bolts. Use a quality dial indicator
set (I use a special version by Central Tool with a magnetic base which
attaches to the strut and a flexible arm for easy indicator positioning) to
measure the runout of the rotor through a 360 degree rotation. Measurements
in excess of .004" or .10mm indicate a problem.

Since the rotor assembly is mounted flush with the hub, one needs to check
the hub carefully for runout as a .002" runout on a 5" diameter hub will
create a .004-006" runout measurement on a perfectly true 12-13" rotor. I
have seen many new BMW's (99-00 model 3 and 5 series cars) with excessive
hub runout and one customer (with a 99 M-Coupe) was denied warranty this
week by a BMW dealer who said .004" (.10mm) hub runout was within spec.
This is absurd in my opinion..... A hub bearing assembly with this much
runout must be replaced before the shimmy problem can be completely corrected.

Assuming the problem is determined to be the rotor, runout is not
excessively out of spec (ie, less than .010" or .20mm) and there's still
plenty of wear left in the disks, you can try truing them on a brake lathe.
Note: measure the rotor thickness before starting....if you're less than
0.75mm from the rotor's minimum thickness, advise your customer to replace
the disks.

My procedure is as follows....mount the rotor on the lathe using the
correct size bell clamps and centering cones (I personally use a chuck
adapter with backing plate). Rotate the rotor through one 360 degree
rotation, marking the high and low spots on the rotor. Loosen the arbor nut
and rotate the rotor approx 180 degrees between the bell clamps, tighten
and remeasure. If there is .002" or greater variation between the 2
measurements or the high/low spots show in different places, the shop owner
needs to true his inner bell clamp/backing plate to the lathe before he can
proceed. It is fairly common for this inner plate to develop runout over
time with use and attempting to correct a rotor with out of spec
accessories can make the rotors worse. One of my customers was charged
$100 by a specialty shop in LA to true 4 Porsche rotors...he turned disks
with .003" runout into disks with .008" runout and still doesn't know what
he did incorrectly. I suspect its the aforementioned inner bell clamp
problem.

After the lathe and accessories are verified for accuracy, I do a first
pass at .003" cut per side using slow feed speeds. Another check with the
dial indicator will tell how much more to remove with the second pass (if
required). When I'm finished with the rotors, I wipe down the arbor and
accessories with some light oil (I use Wurth Rost Off) to keep the
equipment in excellent shape for the next session. SD
PS- sometime folks send me rotors with shimmy problems which check out
perfectly on the lathe. Often these are people who have been using track
pads (you know the ones) that leave a residue on the rotors which cause a
grabbing problem when braking. A good dial indicator should be a part of
every track junkie's tool box so they can troubleshoot these problems
themselves. The residue can be removed easily with the proper abrasive
pads and an angle die grinder.

I'm packing to head up to Buttonwillow for my first school of the
season. I have this ratty old list that I use to check off stuff as I
pack. I'll probably still forget something but I thought it might be
useful for others going for their first time. So here's a link to it.
Feel free to use it, copy it, link to it, steal it, whatever.

Hey guys. Just got my first copy of Autoweek. The first car they show is the
BMW X5 Lemans edition. It uses the LMR's 700HP V12 in there!!!! It's mated to
a 6 speed tranny and does 0 - 100 km/hr in 4.7 seconds!!! LOL!!!

Mercedes AMG watch out!

Chester

BTW, the pic of the revised M version of the X5 looks soooooo much better than
the current iteration. Hot damn!

Well then *definitely* not... the car has no ///M badge on the rear, it was
a factory-delete option. Also, those wheels may come off for some of the
hyper-cool E39 540i wheels that UUC has available (note gratuitous plug).

I'm pretty sure that ///M-ness has something to do with that big metal thing
under the hood... you know, play that little three-note jingle and think
"///M inside".

Jeff (ngrumba <[EMAIL PROTECTED]) asks:

Yes. In fact there's a bulb and a socket on both sides, wired up on one side
only depending on which side of the road you drive on. Some cars have both
rear fogs wired up, some don't. I linked mine to enable foglights on both
sides to light up - which is perfectly legal. With both rear fogs firing,
you can also wire them up to come on with the brake lights. If you want to
retain independent functionality, use either a relay (my belt-and-braces
modus operandum) or, if you don't like the clicking every time you brake, a
suitably beefy diode (John F's more minimalist approach).

Rear fogs work well when they're used properly - thick fog with less than 50
yards visibility. Like front fogs, they are abused often, which is
irritating to the eyes.

Per list recommendations, I secured council to fight my moving violation.
The infraction was "excessive speed for conditions" one rainy night heading
to the mountains. The speed limit changes from 50 to 35 for a mile or so and
I only slowed to 44 as I entered the zone and radar.
Attorney negotiated for dismissal contingent on my donation to DARE in the
amount of $71 (ticket fine).
The attorney then opened HIS wallet, gave me the cash for the donation. I
returned with the reciept which he took to the court clerk and I was done.
The $71 came from the retainer I had already paid but the check hasn't
even been cashed yet! Anyone need a lawyer in the Seattle/Tacoma area, let
me know.

own. Does anyone here have any tips they'd like to share on how to perform
