Many people think that they look cool driving around with their fog lights. SUVs are not the only problem here, but Grand Ams, Grand Prixs, Saturns, and many other smaller vehicles have them on all the time. Some of my neighbors have their fog lights set up to come on whenever they turn their lights on (no matter what the type of road or weather conditions). In this case, Poseur equals butthead. Yesterday, four nice Mille Miglia 17x9 wheels arrived with 245/45 Kumhos mounted and balanced and heat cycled. The package included new lug bolts. All of this for $1598. So I'm all set for the GGC autox next weekend. The gooey tires did bump me up to 'AA' class however. This should be a great weekend down Monterey way. The GGC is holding a Car Control Clinic on Saturday, and the Autocross is Sunday. I am in hopes to see a bunch of my students from Saturday participating in the autox the next day. For those of you that have registered but not sent in your check, be advised that I will need to RECEIVE your check by not later than next Wednesday. I will be finishing the administrative tasks on Thurs. as well as preparing both cars for the weekend. I will not have time to do any further registrations past Wednesday. Many of the foglights are not adjusted properly. Some of them just aim high. Also, their light pattern is not focused (in other words they just spray light). Some cars/trucks who drivers have them on during all types of weather conditions are riding too low in the rear (therefore the lights point up into oncoming drivers eyes). Some drivers are more sensitive to light glaring in their faces. Also, when one has 4 lights blazing at them, their night vision is decreased. Some drivers wonder why other drivers feel the need to have their fog lights on while driving on city streets, in traffic jams, during clear weather, or during the daytime. I am sure that I am not the only who resents those who drive around with their fog lights on all the time. This topic has been discussed several times in the past. Dean All 3 of my vehicles have "fog lights". I happened to be driving the Jeep so passing wasn't an option. 10+ miles I had to deal with. They're not blindingly bright of course, but more than enough to be annoying. I was almost inclined to post a rant on the UUC Garage about it to vent but I figured the hell with it. The 745 has fogs front and rear. I used the rears *once* on a particularly foggy morning, the fronts I've only used a handful of times. I'm not bothered by unnecessary front fog use, provided they aren't blasting me in the face. If the driver feels *kewl* about it, more power to 'em. It's the rear fogs that the US market isn't ready for. When the A4 came out, Car and Driver did a long term test where the Very expensive Quattro 5 speed manual transmission went bad and cost thousands of dollars (I don't remember the exact cost but it was very high) Car and Drive stated that if the car were still not under warranty, the car would be worth spending the money on to repair. Similarly, I have a client who bought a 97 2.8 A4 Quattro preowned for his wife. The car was bought, serviced and traded in at this one VW/Audi/Porche dealer. The record shown that all services were done. With the car one month out of warranty by time but only having 24,000 miles on it, the transmission failed. Audi USA and the dealer refused to replace or repair the transmission without the customer paying 100% of the bill. I got ones that had even more cool flip up covers (manual of course - you had to get on your hands and knees to almost crawl under the big TA overhang to try to pop open these covers to use the lights). I don't know who came up with that design, but I guess I was dumb enough to buy them. I mean, if you had them closed and actually came upon some fog, you would have had to pull over in order to use the lights. Of course, you could turn them on and burn them out with the covers in place no problem. Those things spent less than half an hour turned on over the next two years I owned the car - and I should have been a prime college age candidate for unnecessary-fog-lighting. Any Audi owner's out there know why this might be? My own hypothesis is that the dealer delivered the cars with the rear fogs on and the owners do not know how to turn them off. The rear fog switch in my (wife's) Volvo wagon is in a terrible position, if you weren't looking for it you would never know it was there. OBMWC - I leave my front fogs on whenever my lights are on (actually I think they go off automagically when the high beams are on). I use them alone in inclement weather and twilight conditions. I have a fuel leak on my 87 535i 5 spd. It looks like it's coming from a rubber hose that is under the throttle assembly. I can't see where is attaches to the engine because of where it's located. The engine is still too hot to stick my hand up there. I checked my Bentley but there aren't any pictures that show the routing of the fuel lines to help identify the offending hose. Is this just a hose clamp problem or is it something harder? Thanks in advance.
