Guys: I rarely drive my wife's 89 535iA, but when I do, obviously the first order of business is to pop that puppy into "Sport" mode to enjoy the more "enthusiastic driving" experience advertised in the owner's manual ($1.79/gallon DC gas prices notwithstanding). It seems like every time I have to strap on that 5er it's already due for another Italian tune-up :) Anyway, one of our other cars is an early '80s (read fuel efficiency) MB 380SL - - a nice enough car but woefully underpowered, particularly off the line and at lower speeds. To make matters worse, the MB ATs of that era (as well as the P-cars that use the MB AT) start off in second gear. Minivans beat it off the line. Sheeeesh!!! It's embarrassing!!! So I'm thinking (insert disclaimer of original thought here as the P-car boys have been doing this for years in their 928s): anyway, I'm thinking I can get me a first gear start too by wiring in a parallel "auxiliary" kick-down switch which can be tapped at, say, a stoplight for on-demand first gear start (without having to floor the accelerator to engage the stock kickdown or manually manipulate the shift lever). Then I think some more: if instead of simply tapping the auxiliary kick-down, what if I just held it through acceleration, forcing the solenoid to cause upshifts much closer to redline than normal? Wonder if that would work? And then I think some more: What if instead of a momentary switch on the aux kickdown that had to be held down, I made it a click on (close the circuit), click off (open the circuit) switch? Then I could choose a more "enthusiastic" driving experience through the full range of gears instead of just at takeoff. Right? Wait a minute! Isn't this exactly what the "Sport" mode in the wife's 5er does? My questions to the esteemed group: Is the 535iA Sport mode no more than a parallel click-on click-off kick-down mounted on the console? and if I wire up such a device on the Stuttgart machine, will I also enjoy a more "enthusiastic" driving experience, relatively speaking of course? Last night it was finally warm enough for me to get out in the parking lot at work (yeah yeah, whimp...) and swap out my Ron Stygar Clutch stop for the new UUC Clutch Stop. Installation was a breeze and since it is slightly longer and a bit more stable (retaining nut and washer) I was able to reduce my clutch travel even further than before. Driving the car now is like night and day. The UUC Clutch Stop does to your clutch pedal what the UUC USS does to your shifter. Takes out the extra motion and turns it into pure driving pleasure. Shifts are smoother and faster now. I'm not saying Ron's clutch stop isn't good, but it isn't as solid feeling as the UUC one and it tends to work itself free. When you lose that little rubber OEM cap, the clutch stop makes a click sound every time you disengage the clutch. I'm not trying to plug this product, but when it's good...I gotta tell ya, it's good! Thanks Ben and Rob! At least in the newer E-class, there is no separate fog light switch; it's built into the main headlamp switch. Rotating clockwise one click turns on the parking lights. A second click and on comes the headlamps. PULL one step and the front fog lights turn on. Pull a second step and the rear fog light turns on as well. Turn off your headlamps and the fog's reset to off! At least this was the case in a euro model I drove. It also had the real parking lights come on when you rotated the switch the other way, but I guess this is missing in the US models. BTW, that car doesn't use any keys. The "key" is hidden in the "remote" and is only used if the remote keyless entry doesn't work. To start the car, you stick the "remote" in the ignition and it grabs it and you are good to go. But there is no actual key that is inserted in the ignition - - it's all electronics... - -Luis Marques '97 328i "Peter Sterne" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> WROTE: > > Funny you should mention an Audi, I've noticed that most of the cars > with their rear fogs on when it is not foggy are recent Audis. And a special thanks to Phil Cataldi, who hit the right solution. When you open up your sunroof access panel, there's a big nut in there on a little shaft (which you can turn with an allen wrench to open or close the sunroof). If the big nut's loose, the motor will spin, but the roof won't move. I never would've suspected it as the culprit if I had gone in there without knowing what it did. I only tightened it up with a pair of needle-nose pliers (too lazy to go inside and get out my socket set), so I may have to go back in there sometime soon... KC Boyce '85 325e --> working sunroof! Just go to your local Audi dealer. Point at your M3 and say, "See that M3?, that's my M3." The salesdood will be sooo impressed that they will immediately hand you keys to an S4. Make sure the engine is not broken in, preferably under 100 miles. Proceed to the interstate. Rip through the gears reaching redline each time. Make sure and pop the clutch on each shift to property burn it. The more odors entering the cabin, the better. Spot an offramp and reduce your speed from 130mph to 40mph by slamming on the brakes. Once off the interstate, find the nearest grass field (or any household yard will do) and go test your half-burnt clutch out on the freshly laid sod. Now you have properly "test" drove the S4. All other methods of "test" driving just don't give the consumer what he needs to make a buying decision. I hope this helps. Not a week after unwrapping mine, TWO people come out and offer to sell new, unused HD's for an e-28 for half the price I paid. Damn. I hate when this happens. However, I would like to clarify a couple of points that you raised. The 97 Jetta and the A4 are completely different cars from the ground up - they share 0 parts with each other (unlike the new Passat which basically shares the same platform and drivetrain components with the A4). The quality related issues pertaining to the MK3 Jetta, I suspect are due partially to the fact that these cars were assembled in Mexico (the factory was still not up to snuff at that time) and also because the MK3 Jettas/Golfs suffered from numerous quality and design flaws. The A4's have been and still are assembled in Germany, with the exception of the 1.8 turbo engine which is assembled in Hungary, and I think you will find that the quality of materials used is suffucient to withstand a trip to the moon and back again. I have not spent any time on the A4 discussion board, but I know several friends who own various Audi's, including A4's, and my family owns Audis, one of which is 1998 A4 Quattro 2.8 Avant 5 speed and the other a 1993 100S. I will concede that these are not the driver's cars that BMW's are (although IMHO the new E46 takes a step in the wrong direction), but all of them have been a paragon of reliability and quality. Perhaps the dealership in your area is providing subpar service, but where I live, the Audi dealer shares its space and service area with Porsche and is quite competent. One final point is that all recent Volkswagens, starting with the new Beetle, have taken a signifigant leap forward in quality (Audi should be scared now), and I would recommend that perhaps it's time to rethink your viewpoint regarding VW/Audi products, your mother's 97 Jetta not withstanding.
