Gary is 100% correct in his response.

We use air-powered and electric drivers to fasten different items onto
plastic automotive headlamp housings, such as the bracket that retains the
lightbulb when you twist it into the lamp. These are secured with three
metal Torx style fasteners.

These tools can have a mechanical clutch that simply disengages at a torque
setting, or they can have several sensors that detect the wrench/driver
stalling which is used in conjunction with a depth sensor. It all depends
on the application and material. If there were no torque detecting devices
the operator would strip 80% of the plastic housings. BTW you should see
the way the lamps are visually aimed at automated stations, way cool.

Not theory, reality. I've spent a lot of time in assembly plants. There
are torque clutches on even mundane items like rear view mirror screws.
They design this stuff so the most dis-interested operator can't screw it
up. For any safety related item, the checks are more rigorous.

Toyota ran an ad highlighting their special $25,000 torque wrench that
torque's the tie rod end and aligned the castle with the cotter pin hole. A
moron, on his first day, using this tool, would perfectly torque and
position the nut every time.

There have been three alternators on 6cyl E36s. >From largest to smallest, 120
amp, 105 amp, and 80 amp.
Early 6cyl e36s came with the 120 amp (mine did.) Middle ones came with the 105
amp, and even later ones (M3s) came with the 80 amp. (Facts relayed to
me by ERT.)
"

Is this true? Anyone know what size alternator came on a '99 M3? Are the 120A
alternators still made? Hmmmm....

As far as I know, its true.

;-)

BTW, if you have a 120 amp and you want to put
a supercharger on there, it won't fit.

If your E36 has the same trunk as '99 E36 M3 (probably), your friendly
BMW dealer will have a rather nice net that fits very well. It is $80
or something ridiculous like that.

The cargo net out of a Ford Taurus station wagon is very nice and much
cheaper.

I volunteered at the driving school this past weekend - a great time was
had by all. The weather was weird - Friday was dry, with some rain late,
Saturday was overcast with monsoon-like rains in the afternoon, then Sunday
was clear and cold - in the 30's early - and very windy! Road Atlanta lived
up to the challenge, only a few cars were damaged, mostly on the
rain-slickened track on Saturday. I've posted the pics to a new page on
Photopoint, link below.

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=344104

I also had Stella out on the 'parade laps' on Saturday and Sunday, and took
a short video coming out of corner 10b, up the hill to 11, then down the
hill heading towards turn 12 and and the front straight! I was using my
Mavica and driving with one hand while shooting with the other - and even a
'parade lap' speeds, that hill takes your breath away. It's like you are
going to launch yourself into the Georgia sky, and by the time you see that
there is MORE TRACK,. it is too late. That concrete wall comes up in a
hurry.....quite agressive 'parade laps' if you really wanna know!!!!

Subject: Re: [uuc] <E30> diff q

A diff analogy: Take a ruler and lay it on a table. Push in the middle, (6
inch mark) perpendicular to the ruler, it will move across the table. Have
someone else push on the ends of the ruler (0 and 12 inch marks), also
perpendicular, to counter your force. Whatever force you apply, half is
available at each end. If one end is stopped, the other moves at twice the
speed of the middle.

Inside the differential there is a carrier with 4 bevel gears in a square.
Two are attached to the ring gear, the other two are attached to the output
shafts on each side. These gears work like the ruler analogy. Pull the
cover off the old one (non LSD) and take a look. The LSD has clutches that
hide the gears.

That's typically correct since bridges can lose heat on their
undersides as well.

Never spun on one, but have witnessed it.

Very cool; what *ARE* you listening to in that?  (Or is it an overdub;

there someone in the backseat holding a camcorder?

I have to replace the microfilter on my M3 and am
dreading the procedure. I have heard that there is
two seperate ways to do it.

I remember that there was a Microfilter replacement
procedure (with pictures) on the web somewhere...does
anyone have a good procedure that will cut down on the
cursing and throwing of tools? I heard this procedure
is a real P.I.T.A

BTW, I have the procedure off the Ron Styger
Unofficial E36 website. Is there a better one?
