Subject: [uuc] Exhaust Options

I suppose that this may start some controversy, but here goes. I need to
replace my exhaust from the cat-back on my '84 733i. The choices I am
considering are a 1-piece Bosal System for around $230 from Olympic Parts
Co., a 2-piece (resonator and rear muffler) system from ANSA for $235 from
Vertex Automotive, or an "OEM" system supposedly made by either ANSA or Bosal
from Bavarian Autosport for $245.
Obviously the price differences between these systems isn't significant,
so what are people's general opinions of the performance, longevity, and
sound of these systems as applied to a big six??

Thanks,
Patrick Finn

Gary - any documentation we could read on this? The published test
times for the euro vs US coupe, 0-60 times have varied less than 1/10th
of a second (given the range I've seen for the US coupe of 5.1 to 5.6
seconds 0-60 - I have never seen any euro rating of 5.0 or less..)

And the euro engine has more torque at lower RPM? Got any numbers
on this? I seem to remember the original US-M engine was specifically
designed to have more torque down at low RPMs, sacrificing HP at
higher RPM's 'cause that is the kind of driving we do..

And from the convoluted discussion ("240 may be plenty fast below
80 mph but the 321 hp will be lots faster.") on 'fast' and 'faster' above,
I don't think anyone has argued that the US version IS faster than the
Euro version - the point being made was the US version is fast
ENOUGH (and equal or very close to the euro) for any realistic
driving conditions in this country.

Ultimate fast? Nope - but dare you to drive the current M-Coupe for
long at it's top speed of 135 mph anywhere in the US on public
roads.. you'll be slapped in jail real-fast-now..

I need to replace the fuel gauge located in the dash. BMW only sells
the whole speedometer assembly, $450 bucks!!! Anybody have an old
gauge they want to part with or source where I can get one for a '95
325?

Gary, here is where I need to disagree with you and Andy. Gearing is
everything! take into consideration the 430 HP 318ti the took 3rd place in
the "one lap of America" this car would run the 1/4 mile in the high 12 - 13
second range. A stock M3 runs it in 13.3 @ 105 mph. this car was doing 130mph
at the end but a stock M3 will only do 155mph (ungoverned) where this car
will do 190mph (estimated). Also Keep in mind the Euro E36 ///M3 was not any
much than the US market car in the 1/4 mile (100 mph)

more noticeable at higher speeds, and the 240 may be plenty fast below 80
mph but the 321 HP will be lots faster. The Euro engine also has more
torque at lower rpm.
The only time the 321 HP won't be faster is when both cars are traction
limited. That might be up to 30 mph. The high power car will be traction
limited to a higher speed>

(Of course he told the story better and w/ more detail, but this
should remind y'all of the topic at hand.)

A buddy of mine once did the same thing with his Bronco--gave a
hi-beam offender a shot of the KC HiLiters that is. The oncoming
vehicle responded with a light show of his own--activating the pretty
red and blue flashing "Federal Sign and Signal" lights located on his
own light bar.

FWIW, the Officer admitted he'd been slow to dip his lights and let
my buddy off with a nothing more than a stern warning. But YMMV so be
careful out there...

Scott,
FWIW, a local very fast autocrosser has been running his E30 M3 with
Bilstein HDs for years.
So HDs definitely work with stock E30 M3 springs.
If they are better or worse then Sprots, I can't say.

Heath Kit <http://www.heathkit.com/> is still in business though
their primary focus has changed to training PC technicians. They were
still doing kits in the early 90's though--I stopped in at one of
their stores at that time.

I used a Heath Kit audio amplifier--originally built by my Uncle and
"serviced" by me for years. Okay, it wasn't (quite) up McIntosh or
Crest Audio standards, but it worked just fine--bench and "ear"
tested better than a lot of the "modern" stuff available in the early
80's. (Certainly much better than anything I could afford at the
time--I think I was 12 when I took possession.) I later passed it
along to someone in need and as far as I know it's still going strong.

The problem with your shortwave probably had more to do with the
"assembly" (verb) than the "assembly" (noun).

Subject: [uuc] Radar Detecting Through M5 Logo.

Alex:

Radar waves are very low frequency and high wavelength waves and are able to 'wrap'
around small obstacles easily the wave visible light (the same electro-magnetic
radiation) cannot.

This is why dish antennae can be made of either mesh or matte finish painted surfaces,
but mirrors cannot. In the case of dish antennae, this is kind of cool (no pun
intended) because you can focus the satellite signal without focussing the heat and
frying the electronics at the receiver!

For a sound related analogy think of bass and how omni-directional it is and treble
and how directional it is.

So, the radar is not going through the plastic (it most certainly cannot), but around.
To go through plastic you would need x-rays (very high frequency very short
wavelength) that would go in between the molecular spaces(?).

there isn't enough extra wire. Doesn't the radar still shoot through plastic pretty
well?

And it is (supposedly) true, too, this happened to a friend of a former friend.
Said Dude had a Jeep CJ with a pair of - get this - DC-3 landing lights mounted
up on the roll bar. One night he's cruising a twisty mountain road in San Diego
County and an oncoming car does not dim his high beams. Jeep Dude flashed the
highs once. Nothing. Flashes them a couple more times. Still nothing. You
asked for it, Dude says, and turns on the landing lights. The oncoming car
swerves back and forth a couple of times, comes to a stop in the middle of the
road, and then - you probably saw this coming, right? Oncoming car turns on the
red lights! Yup, it was a County Sheriff's Deputy.

So the Deputy gets out and uses the butt of his pistol to smash the lights. I
cannot recall if he also gave Jeep Dude a ticket, but Jeep Dude submitted a bill
to the county to get reimbursed for the replacement lights, and they paid his
claim.

So this pseudo-flame-thrower-with-lights thing can be great fun, as long as you
know who's on the receiving end of your light show.
