One of Bel better models (forgot which one) got pretty close to V1 in some
recent British car magazine tests. Still, at $350 for that particular Bel
model, it could not match V1's similarly priced performance.

True.
And if your are flying in the middle of the night with absolutely no traffic
in either direction on a 2-lane divided TX road, even V1 will not save your
bacon. Ask me how I know this.

Not exactly.
One reason for saving pennies to buy a hyper sensitive V1 are the hilly
roads. Cresting over a hill you have a very short distance in which your
detector can pick up a radar signal and you can still slow down to legal
speeds. A cheapo $100 detector will eventually wake up, but by that time the
cop will have already gotten your speed reading and flipped his lights.
Another reason is that a cheapo detector will be falsing so much that you
will soon stop paying attention to it altogether. And that's when you get
nailed. Even happens with a V1. You are driving on a packed highway next to
some SUV with a cheapo detector that is leaking Ka and K bands all over the
place. You stop paying attention to the V1 just as a cop is pulling out off
the side of the road to meet his quote. Luckily, on someone else.

TC Kline/ProParts has a way cool blade-adjustable tubular sway bar on their
website. They used to also carry the MASR tubular bar, but it doesn't seem
to be on their web site anymore. Check out http://www.propartsusa.net.

Now that we have come full circle, I would probably favor the Focus out of
the three (I actually looked one over at a local Ford dealership as it was
'dakar' yellow in color and caught my eye).

None the less, I feel Ford is not going in a very good direction design-wise
with their "crisp" edges in the exterior metal (funny that these are coming
after the egg-shaped Taurus ten years ago). The new Mustang is uglier than
the previous model as a result of their "crisp" lines.

I certainly do not consider the "crisp" lines of a Ford anything like the
crisp lines of a BMW.

Best regards,

Rich

After all this "bashing", I have to beg to differ.
I, for one, think the Focus in this group is the exception.
I *really* think it's a fine looking car. Very sharp
looking. I liked it instantly. I agree with Andy T.

>From basic engineering principles , f=ma and the definition of power,
acceleration can be calculated to be proportional to power and inversely
proportional to speed. This means that at low speeds, acceleration can be
very high except for the limit of traction. Acceleration is limited by
traction up to a certain speed. The greater the power to weight ratio, the
higher the speed where acceleration becomes power limited, not traction
limited.

A rear wheel drive high performance passenger car has its acceleration
limited by traction to about 0.7g. A US M3 with 240 hp and 3200 lb (plus
about 1000 lbs in equivalent rotating weight in first gear) is traction
limited to about 32 mph. The Euro M3 is traction limited to about 40 mph.
Since most of the time below 60 mph is spent at speeds where both cars are
traction limited, the only time where the euro car has a chance to outpace
the US car is above 32 mph. Even in this range, the difference is small.
This is why the 0-60 times are so similar (but the Euro car is faster).

At speeds above 60, neither car is traction limited, acceleration, at a
given speed, is proportional to the power. At these speeds, the Euro car
will accelerate 34% faster.

The Euro engine has a peak torque of 258 ft-lb at 3250 rpm compared to 236
ft-lb at 3800 rpm for the US engine. I suspect that below 2000 rpm, the US
engine has more torque, but the engine never sees that rpm when doing a
maximum acceleration run.

In a nutshell, the US and Euro spec M3 have similar 0 to 60 times because
they are both traction limited for a large portion of that test and the Euro
car cannot take advantage of its greater power. At higher speeds, the Euro
spec car will out accelerate the US spec by 34%.

Hi Mike, thanks for the report. Opinion is running about 50/50 right now to
either go with Sports or stay with HDs. I know I would not be unhappy with
Sports. I'm having mixed feelings here.

Point: Get the Sports. Just do the whole job one time.
Counterpoint: Jane, you ignorant slut. Oh wait, wrong counterpoint.
Counterpoint: Save money.

The jury is still out. Plus, there is still the question as to whether the
shocks/struts for the M3 are different, or the same, as the rest of the E30
line. Some vendors list them as the same part number, others list different
part numbers.

Great story Jeff. I had my own encounter with a Bronco but I'm convinced
my guardian angel was driving that one that day. Coming down the mountains
on I-5 trying to reach Seattle, this is the 4th day of travel from
Michigan, it's raining, very dark, my VW's lights are weak, the lines on
the road are faded and the road is getting twisty. I'm about to give up as
I'm having a hard time seeing where I'm going when a Bronco passed me, gets
in front of me and FLASH!!! Daylight in front of the Bronco! Huge grin on
my face, followed the Bronco all the way down and arrived at my new home
safely.

Carlos

That would be the figurative "miles"... I'd have to dig out the old
C&D tests to tell you real numbers, but they're substantially higher
than all the other detectors out there.

Generally, detectors are best at picking out X band, then K band, then
Ka, then laser. This is because (I'm assuming) of the frequency range
with each of these. X has a narrower range than K which has a narrower
range than Ka. Laser is a different ballgame entirely (light, narrow
beam, etc.).

Valentine uses a super-duper (for lack of a better term) antenna to
pick up the signals. If I recall my product literature correctly, it
uses two such antennas in the front, and one in the back. Laser is
picked up with some sort of photosensitive device. The other reason
the V1 is so sensitive is its circuitry. It's powerful enough to scan
all the bands simultaneously. Some detectors (especially Escort
cordlesses) only scan the frequencies every once in a while (2-3 times
a second, depending). Lesser detectors like this will miss an X band
signal if they're using their power to scan the wide Ka band when the X
signal comes in.

Hope this helps explain it!

At 08:46 -0500 on 000315, Gary Derian commanded the electrons to
create a missive titled "Re: [uuc] Status of S52 Engine in M Coupe":
|I agree with Andy. There is no way a 240 hp car will be as fast as the same
|car with 321hp.

Define faster. 0-60? Hell yes. Acceleration is about torque, not
power. Top speed, of course not. Top speed is about power, not torque.

|Gearing helps but not that much.

Look, the Euro car is factory rated at 5.4s, the US car is rated at
5.1s. Gearing helps.

|The difference will be
|more noticeable at higher speeds, and the 240 may be plenty fast below 80
|mph but the 321 hp will be lots faster. The Euro engine also has more
|torque at lower rpm.

From what I can figure, the Euro car (and it's 316hp, at least
according to my figuring (236kW = 316hp) is about 10% stronger across
the board, and has a lower (!) torque peak. (3250 vs. 3800rpm)

Comparing 316/321hp to 240hp is a little deceptive, though, since the
Euro motor makes max power at 7400rpm, and the US motor makes max
power at 6000 and redlines at 6500. (The limiter is a 6800) Does
anyone with a Euro car know what redline is?

If you assume that the Euro motor's torque curve is flat between 6k
and 7.4k (a questionable assumption, but it's all I've got), then the
Euro motor is only making 256hp at 6000rpm.

|The only time the 321 hp won't be faster is when both cars are traction
|limited. That might be up to 30 mph. The high power car will be traction
|limited to a higher speed

With the same gearing, this is true. Change the gearing (as BMW did
for the US) and all bets are off.

|Of course a spinning tire has less traction than a non-spinning one so
|proper driving techniques are necessary to get max performance.

Granted. Though the combination of an idiot and ASC is a fair
approximation of proper driving techniques in a straight line.

I really want the Euro motor and the US gears...but I'll be patient.

Soon enough the new motors will be in the hands of those who have
enough money to replace their slammed Hondas with M3's (which come
from the factory with clear corners...what a bonus!), which in turn
will make those motors available through your friendly neighborhood
recycler.
