It was greatly appreciated (and somewhat successful, I might add). This is what these lists are all about! Now that the mushy stuff is over, here's the play-by-play of my car buying adventure.... I get up at 8:30 to let the Roto-Rooter guy in...oh, wait, sorry, wrong story...lemme try again.... I get up at 8:30, and called my bud Andy, 'cause he wanted to see it, too. We motored on over there around 10:00, and got there just as the owner did. I told him that I wanted to check out the 325is, and that I was going to take it to my mechanic for an inspection, and then to my favorite body shop for a body inspection. I expected this to bother him, but he didn't flinch, but rather merely ask who it was. It turned out that he knows my mechanic, (and his former boss) and has a lot of respect for him. First red flag. It wouldn't start (dead battery). I think that it was dead because the "security" alarm on the radio never shuts off, and the car sat for a week. He jumped started it, and I hopped in to take it away, and he said "You have your license with you, right?" "Of course I...ooof!" Left it at home...So we hopped back in the 318i, and rushed back to get it. <later> So we motored along, and I can't check the radio, because the battery went dead, and wiped the code. Andy fished around in the glove box, which was empty, save for one tiny scrap of paper, which, of all things, has the radio code on it. Cool! The radio/tape deck works (doesn't matter, because I'm putting my Alpine in it this weekend). <later> Sam the mechanic had it on the lift, and we poked around under it, and none of us could believe what we saw. NO LEAKS ANYWHERE! Not a drop. The engine is c l e a n. Runs well, too. The left ball joint is toast (no surprise). He did notice that the driver's door has some rust on it from some prior damage repair (the front fender was replaced, also). <later> My bud Shane the body shop manager poked around, and declared it clean (my assessment as well). I wrote all of this down in my Bad Badtz Maru notebook, and took the car back to Dale (the seller). We talked. He gave me the you-won't-find-a-car-this-good-for-this-price schpiel. I told him that it was a great car, but not worth $6700, and pointed out that I used KBB for work, and know that it over-values everything, that that price was for a mint condition car, and that it was not worth that much. I told him what we found. He saw my note book, took it, and looked at my notes. He threw me a look, and then asked me to make him an offer, but not to offend him. I said "I'll make an offer, but I think that you'll be offended.". He said "Try me". I said "I'll give you $5k for it, right now". He just shook his head in faux disgust, and said "No way". I motioned to Andy to leave, and told Dale that I'd get in touch with him later, when he said "How about $5500?". "I turned back to him and said " I'm starting to like you more and more, Dale!" After a few moments of idle chatter, he spontaneously countered again, this time at $5300. Yup! $200 less than his last final offer! I said nothing to prompt this, either. So I bought it for $5300, or low retail. I took (paid) time off from work to get it. I later found out that Dale used to race a Stingray in IMSA and '68 Camaro in Trans Am class, and he had a Mini Cooper. My wife drove it home, and was freaking, because the torque curve is wildly different than either of our 318s (plus a smidge more HP than hers and gobs more than mine). So, now I'll be asking the same OBC questions that I had ignored until now (like how do you get it switched over to miles from KM?). Get used to it. I'll post photos of it to my web site eventually, but there is one on the E30 Network page that is nearly identical (except that mine has the tan leather). The photo's # is 341, but I don't remember the owner's name. - -- Do Svedanya! From what I understood this system is soft enough to absorb road distortions and yet strong enough to support spirited or agressive driving. I would love to hear some comments from people who have these on their cars. Are they worth all the $$$?? They are more expensive than the Bilstien/HR set up but if they are better performance wise I might think of buying them. Thanks!! Manuel Paredes 95 325i sharked, x-ed, M3mflrd L.A. BMWCCA ______________________ Personally, I swear by the Ground-Control system. It is $400 for a front coil-over using your existing struts/strut housings (if applicable) and an adjustable-height rear perch. They do not use progressive springs (that I know of), but the basic system is excellent for anything from street use to serious racing, depending on spring choice. Jay knows his stuff, their number is in the Roundel. Check them out before you buy. The money they save could be your next set of track tires. Pros and Cons E36 M3 owners, and anyone else in the know: A friend is considering a 95 E36 M3. He and I used to race against each other in SCCA's Improved Touring in Honda Civics. He is sharing the Virginia International Raceway Club race weekend with me in my 325E L Stock car in May. He's done some World Challenge races, etc., etc. Point is, he knows cars and how to drive them. He test drove a 95 M3 today and just about fell in love with it, he says. What are some of the pros and cons of this car? He's planning on daily street driving and track instructing. The car was originally owned and raced by Manny Kruger. When built it was programed by Jim C. and fitted with a large K&N cone filter as well as what could have possibly been the first heat shield ever made, consisting of heat blanket duct taped into the front right corner of the engine bay. The car ran fine and the thrown together heat shield served its purpose, but on such a nice looking (see http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=237665&a=1766106) and nice driving car, an upgrade was in store. Not to mention the fact that the foam filters used in the Jim C. kit flow more air and cleaner air than their K&N counterparts. Having already had the Euro HFM installed and since the car lacked cruise control, I was able to read the directions and complete the install in less than 15 minutes on my first attempt. Truly a high quality kit. Last weekend we took the car to the first testing session for members on the new track at Virginia International Raceway (let me put in a plug for what could be the greatest track on the East coast, this track has more elevation change than Road Atlanta, no concrete barriers, tons of run-off, slow corners, fast corners, off-camber corners, banked corners, rythym corners, a cork-screw, perfect asphalt, long straights, a covered false grid, tons of amenities [plans for a pool, horseback riding, sporting clays, tennie courts, clubhouse, etc], as well as an amazing history...if you live within 4 hours of the track and haven't been, make the trip NOW and sign up for a membership while you're there! No promotional affiliation, just a satisfied member). As far as the butt dyno goes, I don't think there was too much power to gain in an engine already making close to the 100hp/liter mark, however, the new intake definitely sounds better and looks better in the engine compartment. Thanks to Will Turner for taking care of us with the intake. Hope you guys do well in the Speedvision races. We'll be out supporting the bimmers when the ALMS (with the E46 PTG cars), Speedvision (with the Turner Motorsport 328's), and Trans Am series (word is someone might campaining a Jaguar XKR against the Vettes, Stangs, and Cameros this year) comes to Charlotte on March 30-April 1. - -Bryan Watts H-prepped CSL #9 or #19 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 00:38:40 -0600 From: "-A." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [uuc] Uhhhhgly! on 3/15/00 9:00 AM, [uucdigest] at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 09:51:04 -0500 > From: Don Eilenberger <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: RE: [uuc] Uhhhhgly! May I suggest that you tighten that harness and brace for impact my friends. I think that just such an ECHO was featured at the Chicago Auto Show, boasting features such as the availability of TRD parts. Not saying that I speed, just would like one for piece of mind; >yeah, that's it.....<grin>. As a twenty-year user of high-end detectors, i agree with everything everyone else has said about the V1. I've only had mine for a little over a year and i'm still impressed with it compared to all my other detectors. The rearward antenna and directional arrows are the biggest advantages, among many others. I would say you can't afford *not* to have one in these days of ever-increasing radar use. >Well, isnt there something else for cheaper, around $100-150 that would >work *pretty* well? Well any detector is better than none at all, but the level of protection will be quite low compared to the you-know-what. You have to pay extra attention to your surroundings and be extra alert and only use the detector as a supplement to your eyes. Just today i got hit with Laser on the way to work then again on the way home, but i had already spotted the officer holding the gun up to his eye and had quickly slowed down before he zapped me. Had i not been paying attention, he would have gotten me for sure. Instead, he got the guy in the Toyota who was easing past me in the next lane who was going about 10 mph faster. In the morning encounter i was the only car on the road and he gave me a good long zapping as i came down the hill but by that time i was only going a few MPH over the limit. He did give me a good looking at as i cruised by him, and i acted like i was surprised to see him sitting there :-) You really have to stay alert and look ahead if you're exceeding the limit. Another time i was flying across the desert on a long straight highway at some seriously high speeds and spotted something small and black in the distance, so i slowed it down and sure enough just as i got it down to legal speeds i got hit with CHP instant-on Ka band. Had i not been looking ahead and paying attention, he would have nailed me big time. Not even my V1 would have saved me in these instances. All it did was verify that i wasn't zapped before hauling it down to acceptable speeds :-) A $59 detector can do that just as well...... Check out these sites; they're heavily V1 biased but can provide some valueable insights on many of the non-Valentine 1 type of radar detectors out there, and how they perform.
